Community Tasting Notes (average 91.6 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 23 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by 2loyal on 4/7/2024 & rated 91 points: Drank 1-3 hours after pulling (broken) cork. Tasty PS that reminds me why I was happy to pay $30 for this 13 years ago… understanding that I would have to wait for it. Love having something like this to enjoy as a change of pace vs a CS when grilling. No need to wait, but do give it a little air. (270 views)
Tasted by wino121 on 2/18/2024 & rated 92 points: Vinturied into decant,
Still tight, angular, but in a great spot, this is exactly how I envisioned this at this stage…terrific.
Very slight bricking,
Drink now with air, thru 2026-9 (275 views)
Tasted by Freedom1095 on 1/9/2021 & rated 91 points: In a great spot right now. Tannins have calmed down, and I appreciate tasty black fruits with a medium to long finish. Complex enough to match with pan fried Daikon cake w egg & Kimchi.... (818 views)
Tasted by rdf58 on 8/23/2018 & rated 92 points: Thought it was time to try a Carlisle PS with a little bottle age but no, the time in the cellar has hardly made a dent in this one. Inky dark PS color. The tannins are still there, but coming into balance and by no means obtrusive. Medium-full bodied with blueberry fruit. Still showing some oak. Opens up nicely to a somewhat fruit forward wine. Still going strong after several days. Drink or hold, hold, hold. (1326 views)
Tasted by jaumealaska on 3/11/2018 & rated 91 points: Drank over 2 days. Spice dark fruit some meat notes to the nose. Body is well rounded with solid tannins that have lost their hard edges and grip but still present to off set the acid backbone. Great finish. Softened a little on the second day; aromatics improved with time. Love this style of wine; can't wait for the newer vintages to put in their time. (1252 views)
Tasted by csimm on 3/21/2017 & rated 93 points: Same as my notes from six months ago. Decanted a total of three hours, which helped. There is definitely a spine left in it for sure, and enough grip to keep the frame solid throughout consumption. That said, it has transitioned into the softer side of PS at this point. It was pretty much fully resolved after some air. But ironically it wasn't displaying a lot of secondary notes. A pleasant and tamed PS nonetheless.

Personally I like just a little more kick, but this was a nice agreeable drink, especially given the varietal.

Topping out at about 91-93 points for me. In the end, I prefer the Palasades PS over this. (2398 views)
Tasted by Geoff on 3/5/2017 & rated 93 points: Powerful wine.Still quite young. Full bodied, dark fruit, strong tannins, long finish. Has not yet softened or developed any secondary notes. Matched well with gourmet burgers. (1319 views)
Tasted by csimm on 11/22/2016 & rated 93 points: A very beautiful example of the varietal; in a near-perfect drinking window. Displaying finessed flavors of black raspberry, blackberry, purple berry/plum, and hints of blueberry. Subtle asphalt notes as well.

Missing just a little complexity for me in terms of secondary olive, charcoal, and mineral notes sometimes found in upper end PSs. This was a little more of a red/black profile versus the purple/blue/black fruit that I tend to prefer.

93 points from me. My other half thought it was a 95+, stating it was one of the most balanced and smooth PSs she had ever tasted. A solid PS, especially for the QPR. Not as intense as the Palisades series, but still noteworthy. Paired great with gojuchang meatballs. (2953 views)
Tasted by pakabear on 5/25/2016 & rated 92 points: Black fruit, squid ink, tar and a toasted oak finish. Really nice now but give it a other couple years to peak. (939 views)
Tasted by rdf58 on 3/13/2016 & rated 92 points: Inky dark PS color. Opens with some robust, dry tannins which quickly lightened up. Medium-full bodied with blueberry fruit. Still showing some oak. Young and a bit closed down. I'd be tempted to hold this one. (1020 views)
Tasted by BrianMc on 2/17/2015 & rated 92 points: Normally not a fan of PS but this one was great. Soft, big and ready to drink. (1414 views)
Tasted by DavidDay on 1/3/2015 & rated 92 points: Blackberry and blueberry notes in the nose, full-bodied and opaque, dark in the glass, drinking pretty well right, I don't know how long this one will last, but it will be awhile. (1200 views)
Tasted by silton on 1/2/2015 & rated 91 points: Accessible, but considerably more giving and expressive on day 2. Sturdy like a PS and smooth like a Carlisle. Limited range of flavor here compared to the Palisades -- more flat black fruits without sweeter blue fruits or floral nuance -- but I drank most of this bottle without food. Try again 2018-2022 if cellar space allows. (1151 views)
Tasted by Silveradoup on 6/30/2014 & rated 93 points: Still just a baby (1564 views)

Tasted by Castle Peak on 5/3/2013 & rated 92 points: As a pop and pour it was youthful, tannic and an excruciatingly complex wine. I swear the wine has the bones for 20+ years of aging. Day two was a completely different experience. The wine settled and was pleasantly balanced with purple fruits, oak, spice, leather and floral notes. (1227 views)
Tasted by pakabear on 7/11/2012 & rated 92 points: Needs time, give a few years (1465 views)

Petite Sirah

Varietal character (Appellation America) | P.S. I Love You: A Petite Sirah Advocacy Organization

Petite Sirah is a variety of red wine grape grown in France, California, Israel and Australia. Recently, wineries located in Washington State's Yakima Valley, Maryland, Arizona, West Virginia, Mexico, Chile's Colchagua Valley and Maipo Valley, and Ontario's Niagara Peninsula have also produced wines from Petite Sirah grapes. Though developed in France, it is nearly extinct there as of 2002, hanging on in limited plantings in the Isère and Ardêche regions of the Rhône Valley and in Palette, a tiny appellation in Provence. It is the main grape known in the US and Israel as Petite Sirah with over 90% of the California plantings labeled "Petite Sirah" being Durif grapes; the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms recognizes "Durif" and "Petite Sirah" as interchangeable synonyms referring to the same grape. The grape originated as a cross of Syrah pollen germinating a Peloursin plant. On some occasions, Peloursin and Syrah vines may be called Petite Sirah, usually because the varieties are extremely difficult to distinguish in old age.

The 'petite' in the name of this grape refers to the size of its berries and not the vine, which is particularly vigorous. The leaves are large with a bright green upper surface and paler green lower surface. The grape forms tightly packed clusters that can be susceptible to rotting in rainy environments. The small berries creates a high skin to juice ratio which can produce very tannic wines if the juice goes through an extended maceration period. In the presence of new oak barrels the wine can develop an aroma of melted chocolate.

Petite Sirah produces dark, inky colored wines that are relatively acidic with firm texture and mouth feel. The bouquet has herbal and black pepper overtones, with plum and blackberry flavors on the palate. Compared to Syrah, the wine is noticeably more dark and purplish in color. The wines are very tannic with aging ability that can eclipse 20 years in the bottle.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
