Community Tasting Notes (average 88.9 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 30 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by djpo on 11/13/2021 & rated 88 points: Somewhat linear. Hints of past complexity. Waited too long to drink. QPR suspect even at time of purchase (1021 views)
Tasted by Casablanca77 on 7/29/2021 & rated 92 points: Another great Condrieu from E. Guigal. I thought maybe this might be past its prime when I opened this vintage but it did not disappoint. This is medium to full-bodied with aromas of honeysuckle, citrus and apricot. The flavors are of orange zest, white nectarine and a touch of oak. The finish is medium to long and very savory. (1124 views)
Tasted by HandmadeHomemade on 9/25/2020: Still drinking quite well- as others have said, lacks a little quality for the price... On the nose, I get vanilla bean, baked pear, red apple, and some floral notes. Seems a bit boozy/spicy in the nose as well as some implied sweetness. In the mouth, the wine if full-ish and coating, warming almost. I preferred this with a little more of a chill on it, as it came to temp it got a little out of focus. Flavors match the nose and it's intensity. Could use a bit more "lift" from some fruit acid, as others have noticed, this seems a bit too oily/flabby. It's decent, very good- but when I'm paying $55/bottle, I expect a bit more- though this isn't Guigal's La Doriane either. (1445 views)
Tasted by Rivas Jakara on 3/27/2020 & rated 88 points: Very nice but a little underwhelming for a condrieu. Not quite showing enough body or minerality to back up the oak. In sort of an uncanny valley for me on the QFP curve. A bit more expensive than a new world viognier but not as much character as a Cuilleron. (1513 views)
Tasted by ATL on 1/19/2020: Not at all pleasant as an aperitif, but picture perfect with cauliflower soup with chili oil and pancetta. (1556 views)
Tasted by Suzyquatro on 11/6/2019 & rated 91 points: Heldere sprankelende lichte goudkleur - Aroma's van vanille, lychee, abrikoos en citrus - Mondvullend en mooi uitgebalanceerd, licht boterachtig, vleugje benzine, frisheid door goede zuurtegraad, secundaire tonen - Aangename afdronk. (279 views)
Tasted by winefairy on 10/13/2019: Golden, typically viognier in every way, and so well expressed, low acid and high alcohol, but not perceived that way, really excellent, made me smile the entire dinner. (1075 views)
Tasted by faivre_eric on 8/31/2019: Extraordinaire.
- HW (1031 views)
Tasted by christiecsa on 10/16/2018: Pale, Gold
Clean, medium+ intensity, perfumy (intro level condrieu)
Honeysuckle, white peach, pineapple, minerality with wet stone, elderflower
Developing
Dry, medium- acidity, medium- body, medium alcohol, medium intensity, medium- finish
Good (1121 views)
Tasted by Steve&Carolyn on 9/8/2018 & rated 91 points: lychee and apricot with some minerality and lots of floral notes. Quite nice. (939 views)
 Tasted by Chenkl on 5/31/2018 & rated 85 points: 成熟果香,酒體飽滿,酸度平衡,帶礦石味,尾韻略苦 (1220 views)
Tasted by mnoljo on 2/19/2018 & rated 91 points: A lively wine paired well with braised pork. White fruit and floral notes nice weight and lingering finish (1406 views)
88 p. (1225 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 11/22/2017 & rated 91 points: Litigators' Wine Dinner (Tung Lok Signatures, Orchard Parade Hotel): Very enjoyable - this was nicely made for an entry level Condrieu. The nose was a pretty melange of lychee, musk melons and white flowers. I liked the palate too, really well-balanced, with nice white peach and beeswax tones underlined by a flinty minerality. Simple, but a really pleasant drink. (1551 views)
Tasted by Deux Chevaux on 11/15/2017: Similar to our note in January. Lovely stuff over three nights. (1166 views)
Tasted by Rupert on 10/16/2017: This is OK. Reasonably weighty viognier, but doesn't really have the richness or magic I expect of a condrieu (1029 views)
Tasted by lkilpio on 6/12/2017 & rated 92 points: Very good. This is a very fruity, thick and intensive wine, offering rich aromas and flavors of tropical fruits. The impression is balanced and stylish, though, and there is enough acidity so that the wine keeps fresh on the palate. (1045 views)
Tasted by HL Pong on 6/2/2017 & rated 91 points: Appearance: clear, medium+ lemon, with legs and pettillance

On nose : medium+ to pronounced intensity, very flora, yellow and white floral aroma : acacia, stone fruit: very peachy, pineapple, honey, a hint of vanilla oak, petrol, oily, very pleasant, the wine is still developing.

On palate : dry, medium acidity, medium+ flavour intensity, full body and creamy, Malolactic fermentation could be noticed. High alcohol but not throat burning, medium+ finishing, all aroma on palate with trivial bitterness and creaminess. Medium+ finishing.

The wine has very special aroma, very aromatic, aroma on nose is better than on palate, that is a good wine, drink now or hold for 3 more years (1054 views)
Tasted by GonzaloManzaneda on 4/3/2017 & rated 75 points: Azucarado, goloso en nariz. Meloso y untuoso en boca. Acidez un poco punzante, posgusto bueno y largo. 100% Viogner. (1110 views)
Tasted by Brent25 on 3/16/2017 & rated 91 points: Sugared grapefruit with a touch of honey, peach and pith; palate of lychees and grapefruit; unctuous with excellent finish; serve cold - became a little flabby as it warmed up (1139 views)
Tasted by RajivAyyangar on 2/4/2017 & rated 86 points: WSET Diploma Unit 3 - Rhone and Spain (SF): (non-blind)
low-temp fermentation
2/3 ferment stainless, 1/3 ferment in new barrels, 100% malo
100% new oak elevage

Medium lemon color.
Clean, elevated-intensity nose. (pronounced)
- fruit-loops (ripe peach, apricot, slight cream - sourcream or buttercream from lees or oak?)
- could be malo but probably they wouldn't do malo because of the already-low acidity.
- citrus - meyer lemon
- white flowers, orange blossoms, acacia
- clearly terpenic

Palate
- dry, medium plus body
- medium plus alcohol - 13.5%
- medium acid
- medium plus phenolic bitterness
- medium plus finish - mostly fruit loops and peach
- slight evidence of buttercream (oak) on the finish
- no evidence of oak on the palate.
- slight leesy note

A very good Condrieu, well-balanced alcohol and fruit against the acid.
A persistent finish.
The wine shows excellent depth of flavor and complexity with numerous primary and secondary flavors. In a better example, the bitterness would be less angular. (1538 views)
Tasted by Deux Chevaux on 1/7/2017: Light golden. Typically floral, with all those white blossoms and such. Almost rich and a bit oily. Yellow stone fruit pit, including a pleasant touch of bitterness, which to us did add complexity and some tension. Balanced. Enjoyable over four nights, with some development of pleasing earthiness and a touch of minerality over that time. (1010 views)
Tasted by MV2007 on 12/14/2016: First experience with this wine and quality Condrieu in general. Decanted 1.5 hours and re-chilled. A monster, characteristic of the style and maybe its youth, but begs for some seriously buttery shellfish or super, runny, stinky cheese. Otherwise, not for my palate. (1040 views)
Tasted by MNig on 11/3/2016 & rated 85 points: Blind tasting of wines from Northern Rhône. Again, rather floral on the nose, but this has a noticeably clammy and perfumed tendency. Aside from the sea of blossoms, which can hardly be missed, I get notes of stone fruits. Slightly creamy mouthfeel, lots of extract and a strong alcohol. Medium-strong (-) acidity, that lets the wine roll off your tongue rather floppily. I’m missing inner tension, balance and structure here. Perfumed and flowery on the palate, too, along with some yellow fruits and a note of glycerin. Medium-long to long-lasting finish.

(1301 views)

A FAMILY HISTORY
Land with 24 centuries of history behind it, worked and preserved by three generations of winemakers with family values at their core and a commitment to an illustrious terrain that produces prestigious wines. This, in a nutshell, is the Maison Guigal. Right from the beginning the motto, “No Pains No Gains” underpins the promise made to Etienne Guigal. A commitment to work together to follow in his footsteps, to communicate the family’s passion and create so many emotions. Today, Marcel and Philippe, along with their wives, are the guardians of this exceptional domain which combines history, devotion and a sense of togetherness. A breath of inspiration for generations to come.

CÔTE-RÔTIE
1
Planted on slopes by the Romans 24 centuries ago, this illustrious vineyard is made up of the Côte Brune, upstream of the Reynard and the Côte Blonde which is downstream. Planted almost exclusively with Syrah, the Côte Brune produces a powerful, intense wine. Thanks to a dash of Viognier which compliments the Syrah, the Côte Blonde is more subtle. There is a charming legend attached to this appellation and the Château d’Ampuis: “the sire of this place had two daughters, one with hair as dark as the night and the other blonde like a field of wheat. When they got married he endowed each with two of his best slopes. This is how we inherited the Côte Brune and the Côte Blonde”

CONDRIEU
2
With its steep terraces which plunge towards the Rhône, this vineyard is planted solely with Viognier. A rare grape varietal imported by the Greeks at the beginning of our era, combined with granite soils its naturally complex character produces a unique white wine with a yellow golden hue and intense and subtle notes of delicate apricot and white peach.

SAINT-JOSEPH
3
Enjoyed at the table of kings, this illustrious wine’s name hails back to the 16th Century and the Jesuit monks of Tournon. The reds are made from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Rousanne. These grape varieties grown on a South to South East facing steeply sloped vineyard with granite soils produce elegant, luscious wines.

HERMITAGE
4
A prestigious appellation since ancient times, it is named after a 13th Century hermit who sought redemption by devoting himself to prayer and the cultivation of vines. Enjoyed by the Russian Court and the great and the good of Europe, this rich and powerful wine with intense aromas is produced from Syrah for the reds and Marsanne and Roussanne for the whites.

CROZES-HERMITAGE
5
A typical wine of the northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage benefits from warm pebbly soils with good drainage. This is a vast appellation partially planted on slopes. The reds are produced from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Rousanne. The red wine is deep ruby in colour, full of savoury flavour and well-balanced. The white wines are dry and aromatic with floral notes.

CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE
6
These soils are composed of calcareous round pebbles and the vineyards are swept by the Mistral winds and warmed by the Provencal sunshine, resulting in wines with unmistakable flavours of the South. These southern wines are produced from a complex blend of the 13 grape varieties of the appellation with Grenache as the main component. They are complex with soft and powerful tannins and are characterised by a generous and strong personality.

Viognier

Viogner is wrong wine

This is nonsense.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

### 2017 vintage ###
"The first red wines already tasted in the Northern Rhône promise a beautiful vintage, with a quality close to the 2015 or even the 2009 vintage" - NEWRHÔNE MILLESIMES
