Community Tasting Notes (average 93.7 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 37 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by joshabramson on 2/3/2024 & rated 93 points: This bottle tonight was nothing like I remembered from the last time I tasted it 3 years ago. While the tropical notes of pineapple and ripe fruit were still present, this bottle was much more honeyed and round and lacked the acidity and cut that I experienced last time I opened one of these. Forgetting about my previous experience, I would have certainly expected more acidity and precision from Coche in a vintage like 14'. Bottle variation, I assume? Or is this 14' slipping a bit? Hard to say. (776 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 1/13/2024: Showing well; lemony, match stick, slightly nutty, full and creamy - but not really exciting, not really head-turning. A lovely drink with dinner but not clearly more. (967 views)
Tasted by Corgi on 11/28/2023: Intense with classic Coche flint. (636 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 6/13/2023 & rated 94 points: Sour citrus notes. Intense piercing palate. (1487 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 2/3/2023 & rated 96 points: blind
I thought it is not Meursault and quality wise PC to GC. Very special nose. A friend of mine recognized the domaine and vintage. Lovely balanced and concentration. 96 (2271 views)
Tasted by Marc Vanholst on 1/7/2023 & rated 90 points: Disappointing bottle which did not come around. Decanted 3 hrs before a lunch and then tried again leftovers the evening but stayed flat and lacked complexity. Normally 2014 should be a great year for this wine but this time it did not deliver. Probably an off bottle. (1391 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 8/2/2022 & rated 94 points: Already completely brilliant and I have zero issue drinking this right now. Reduced, subtle smoke, glorious golden fruit, a little bit of that blue cotton candy. Mouth coating, oily texture. Balanced ripe fruit and acid. Long. Complete. Terrific. (2261 views)
Tasted by Tony Ling on 6/24/2022 & rated 95 points: PNP into Zalto White Burgundy glass (even wider and more shallow than Zalto Burgundy glass, “Fruit” day): Medium golden to the eyes.

Top Jura like minerality driven, oxidative notes and superb lean and energetic for my glass but the glass for others are clearly different with more butterscotch and menthol and minty spices notes.

Interesting second tasting of the same wine in consecutive days. 95 points easy.

With time more salt preserved citrus peels. (2205 views)
Tasted by Tony Ling on 6/23/2022 & rated 96 points: PNP into Zalto Burgundy glass (“Fruit” day): Medium bright golden to the eyes.

Superbly rich and luxurious citrus fruits like grapefruits with peels, extremely complex yet so elegant. Smoke, floral, earthy almost. Butter and almost popcorn notes. Menthol and minty spices notes too. White peppery and subtle oxidative notes. Ultra complex nose.

Light-footed, pure rock like minerality and perfect acidity, complex fruits and endless finish.

Effortless wine here. 96 points easy. Probably the single best white I ever tasted this year so far. Wow! (2003 views)
Tasted by jnewman77 on 5/25/2022: First Coche-Dury white; had at a restaurant and this was really quite impressive. I'm always concerned these benchmark producers may be a let down, but this was definitely not. The intensity on the nose was incredible; lemon zest, ripe apple, pear, crushed stone, a whiff of gun flint, just a hint of sweet spice and floral notes. With air the apple and pear became more prominent and the floral and spice were more evident. The palate had incredible intensity with lemon peel and minerals as the main drivers. The concentration and depth were excellent for a village level wine. At times over 2 hours the orchard fruits were a bit more prominent, but this always seemed primarily driven by citrus and stone. The finish was incredible with a lingering lemon peel, saline, and stone note that lasted a good minute after the sip. Glad to have tried this. Sadly not sure I can afford much more at the current tariff, but I'd love to try more. If the village stuff is this good I can only imagine the 1er crus etc are spell binding. (1674 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 5/8/2022 flawed bottle: Occasional dinner group: A mixed set.. (@ Bouwkunde, Deventer): Corked (1955 views)
Tasted by joshabramson on 11/8/2021 & rated 97 points: Lots of acid, ripe and tropical, smells like pineapple. I thought this was drinking great tonight, was neck and neck for me with an 02' Raveneau mointmains. (2293 views)
Tasted by LB88 on 11/29/2020 & rated 93 points: Double decanted, certainly gained weight from same vintage last year from memory. Still crisp and precise, toasted walnuts and just so elegant and well stitched. Should improve with more cellar time. (2632 views)
Tasted by steinersing on 11/28/2020 & rated 93 points: Searing acidity in a good way. I would wait for this to become a little lusher but very attractive now. No matchstick today. (2491 views)
Tasted by kr522 on 5/11/2020 & rated 93 points: Tasty, focused citrusy notes, with some rounded edges. Not a ton of Coche matchstick, but nice lemon oil finish. Will not be buying more at this price, but enjoyable (3186 views)
Tasted by LB88 on 12/27/2019 & rated 92 points: Currently a solid 92 but will certainly get better with age wait another few years (3153 views)
Tasted by steinersing on 12/9/2019 & rated 96 points: Great purity and energy - but too early (2406 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 12/9/2019 & rated 94 points: Excellent, but drink the 2002 first. Really linear. (2812 views)
Tasted by Luke Wine on 7/17/2019: White flowers & yellow fruits, lovely popcorn & matchstick. Still super compact on the palate with excellent minerality. Has plenty of energy and drive. The price has become ridiculous but for sure it's delicious wine. (2661 views)
Tasted by strijbosmh on 7/2/2019 & rated 97 points: Brilliant. Pure. Focused. Meursault. Coche-Dury. (2276 views)
Tasted by Andre Brattland on 3/26/2019 & rated 97 points: The wine has been followed for a period of 3 hours.

Initially, a bit of a gentle expression on the aromas with a little smoke that eventually disappears and the lady says that she is awake. Deep and distinctly fresh and delicious citrus and cool stonefruit. The butter is first taken straight from the refrigerator, but at room temperature the butter melts and seduces more and more as time goes on.

Pretty rich wine that is so indescribably clean and energy-rich! Precise and the wine are just as linearly beautiful, without thinking of being too broad or masculine. Velvet! Lovely lovely citrus and lime peel that shouts freshness. Great minerality too. More buttery as time goes by. One thinks that several superlatives cannot be used - an insanely wonderful finish with great crisp accidity - What a energy it creates!

This is an absolutely brilliant wine - only details - especially the lack of some aromas make me to drawn points. Anyway - this is well deserved 97 points. (3096 views)
Tasted by BradE on 2/28/2019: If the benchmark is village white burg, this was good. If the benchmark is Coche, 2014, and it’s price point, I found this somewhat uninspiring compared to other recent vintages (e.g. 2012, 2016, and edited to add 2017). (2496 views)
Tasted by rnellans on 2/25/2019 & rated 93 points: Moderate matchstick, soft, shy nose, nicely balanced, rich mid-palate. (2359 views)
Tasted by BenBlu on 2/24/2019 & rated 94 points: Benefiting from coming from 50 year old plus vines and some relegation fruit from more highly ranked premier and grand crus as Lukasz who brought the bottle remarked. This was certainly sensational for a village level. Early to drink now but lovely to catch it in this stage where the energy and tension are simply tantalising. Outstanding. (2229 views)
Tasted by Willi Vinotti on 8/30/2018 & rated 92 points: Of course outstanding stuff, with mineral charme, extremely intense and long, floral honey notes and wax... though.... it felt overengeneered for simply accompanying (good) food. Maybe too much wood here? The price tag is justified by complexity and intensity as well as scarcity, but somehow this stands in the way of simple pleasure. (2400 views)

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio

Meursault

Located in Cote de Beaune, south of Volnay and north of Puligny Montrachet. Meursault ("Murr-so") has historically been Burgundy's center for white wine production. In fact, nearly all of the 2.5 million bottles produced from 440 ha (1,090 acres) are whites. The soil is a mixture of marl and chalk and is perfectly suited to the production of chardonnay. Meursault wines are known for aromas of hazelnuts, honey and vanilla for its aromas and creamy, almost olive oilllike texture. There are no grand crus in Meursault, though Les Perrières, Les Genevrières and Les Charmes produce remarkable wines. Further, some of the most well-known vineyards of Meursault such as Narvaux and Limozin are not premier cru but Villages-classified vineyards. Recent top vintages include 2008, 2007, 2005, 2002, 1999, 1996, 1993, 1990.

With 437ha. of vineyards dedicated to Villages wine or Premier Cru, Meursault has the largest area permitted to be planted in white wine in the Cote-d'Or. Furthermore, despite the fact that the village lacks even one grand cru, Meursault has historically been Burgundy's center for white wine production, in the past even more so than Puligny-Montrachet or Chassagne-Montrachet. While much of those two villages had in the past been planted to red grapes, Meursault has always been white wine territory. In fact, the modern day vineyard of Les Combettes in Puligny-Montrachet, which forms a continuous chain with the premier crus of Meursault, was once considered part of Meursault and not Puligny, where the many nearby vineyards produced red wine. There are several important factors that determine the reputation of Meursault. Primarily, the soil throughout most of Meursault is perfectly suited to the production of chardonnay; it is a mixture of marl and chalk, that when combined with a largely east or southeast exposure creates healthy grapes that are full of character. Another factor correlates to geology, though in a very different way. Meursault's high water table allows its residents to carve deep, cold cellars "perfect for the production of wine" into the chalky, stony soil. So, while large negociants from Beaune dominated the production and marketing of Burgundy throughout time, Meursault remained a wine of its own citizens. Contributing to this, since red wine has been more prized throughout time, these same negociants looked elsewhere for sources because the wine of Meursault has always been white.

What makes the wine so special? The most common descriptors attached to Meursault are hazelnuts, honey and vanilla for its aromas and creamy for its texture. However, this simplifies things quite a bit. In most cases, Meursault despite an almost olive-oil texture is countered by a precise mineral character, stoniness and a more refined overall palate than, for instance, Chassagne-Montrachet. It's the unique stony/mineral character that often gets lost when tasting Meursault, as many concentrate on the ripe, hedonistic primary flavors and aromas. It's the bipolarity of the wine, the interplay of both factors, that makes Meursault one of the most sought after white wines in the world. As mentioned above, there are no grand crus in Meursault, though many would argue that Perrieres, Genevrieres and Charmes can attain these lofty heights in the hands of the best producers. Further, some of the most well-known vineyards of Meursault such as Narvaux and Limozin are not premier cru but Villages-classified vineyards, though again, the best examples are clearly of higher quality. source: http://www.burgundywinecompany.com/wines/display.php?subregion=Meursault
