Community Tasting Notes (average 91.2 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 223 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by sastewart on 2/22/2024 flawed bottle: From a half bottle. Crazy volatile acidity with plenty of off putting flavors and aromas. Undrinkable. (1237 views)
Tasted by philmtl on 1/21/2024: 2009 Meyney is totally black-fuited with black currants, black berries and a persistent slate/graphite finish. A little too smooth. (1504 views)
Tasted by Chrysostomus on 10/20/2023 & rated 93 points: Main impression: Darkness! Dark purple/red color, nearly black. The nose is dominated by blue and black fruits. Very impressive. On the palate there are no tertiary notes yet, fruit dominates here too. Will last for a long time and is not already on its peak. Wait and it will pay off...Give it many hours of air if opened now! (2052 views)
Tasted by O'Meara on 10/19/2023: Very good showing for this wine. Still mostly primary and the merlot really shows. The rim is just starting to show red and not the deep purple of past bottles. Tannins are very fine…dare I say ferrous. Acidity is definitely present and I’m slightly worried that the fruit might not live up to the structure in several years. But this is about as nice a cru bourgeois wine as I can think of. Drink now or hang tight for a couple years to see if anything new develops. (1970 views)
Tasted by Smahlatz on 9/17/2023 & rated 89 points: Better than the last, but there is still a hint of something on the nose that isn't right (2021 views)
Tasted by SpitzNV on 8/15/2023 & rated 92 points: PnP. Drank over two hours. The tannins are strong with this one. Everything else in balance with nice minerality. A tad hot for Bordeaux? I'd wait another 2-3 years before opening. Very promising. Could rate 94 in five years. (1932 views)
Tasted by Nonvintage on 8/13/2023 & rated 88 points: Upon opening was unbalanced, and reminiscent in part of cognac (assuming the oak), with some graphite. After 1.5 hours, fruit showed up to bring forwards balance, but it never really shone. On day 2 the fruir was stewed. Could’ve been bottle variation? (1739 views)
Tasted by O'Meara on 6/3/2023 flawed bottle: Maderdized. Dang (1927 views)
Tasted by mayfield on 4/8/2023 & rated 93 points: This was delicious right out of the bottle. I’m a little worried now that it won’t hold up tomorrow but we’ll find out. It’s not just a warm vintage Bordeaux either—it has some St Estephe typicity as well, a specific sort of stony minerality on top of the fruit. A great claret. Meyney always does well in the warm vintages. (2264 views)
Tasted by Rick & Ilsa on 2/28/2023 & rated 91 points: Decanted for 2 hours and it could have used more. When you see the St Estephe on the bottle and taste the wine, you have to nod. To me, red fruits and berries, tobacco, earth, and spice with the tannins still needing to resolve. Medium to full bodied and definitely ripe. Plenty of time left to improve I think. Nice wine. (1039 views)
Tasted by pavel_p on 1/28/2023 & rated 92 points: Opened two bottles of the 2009 Meyney and one bottle of the 2009 La Lagune during a series of CNY dinners within a few days. Just like on previous encounters I feel both are very good Bordeaux and inline with some of the best efforts from both Chateaux over the years. But neither is something really special, as the initial raving reviews of the 2009 vintage might have made us believe. I would take a mediocre vintage of a better producer anytime over an entry level 09 or 10.
In my eyes both wines, and in particularly the Lagune, would have benefitted from a touch less toasted new oak. The toast remains a rather dominant element on the palate even after 14 years. Not sure if the balance can improve in the near term as the fruit will continue to gradually fade from here. (2665 views)
Tasted by mwneil on 11/30/2022 & rated 93 points: Wine has aged well,10 years since I last tasted it, fruit shines in this balanced Bordeaux, smooth tannins, medium body, stood up to 2 other St Julien Bordeaux wines we tasted, would drink again, tasted in FW. (2580 views)
Tasted by Phillemon! on 11/5/2022 & rated 93 points: No decanting (even though the bottle turned out to have a fair bit of sediment), PnP and consumed over the next 1,5 hour. Drinking very, very nicely now. Deep purple red color, and a pronounced nose of ripe black and red fruits with some tertiary notes emerging. The same ripe (almost jammy) fruits (though maybe not very 'precise' as wine critics like to describe some of the better wines made these days), and softened tannins all nicely integrated with secondary and emerging tertiary notes on the round, medium+ density palate. The medium acidity and high (14,5%) ABV are not overly noticeable or distracting. Finish is smooth and long. Excellent wine that seems to have reached the start of it's prime drinking window. Plenty of life and further evolution ahead. (2641 views)
Tasted by Bordeaux 2013 on 11/5/2022 & rated 93 points: Really an excellent wine, especially price/quality. The fact that it continued to improve after two hours of drinking (from bottle) shows that this wine still has a long life ahead! (2368 views)
Tasted by brianakrin on 10/10/2022 & rated 91 points: Drinking well , no hurry very nice medium bodied left bank Bordeaux with sweet long finish . (2567 views)
Tasted by dubdub on 9/18/2022: Nose of crushed herbs, dark stone fruit. In the mouth slightly heavy, dark fruits, some cedar, a bit simple with a touch of heat on the finish. (2323 views)
(2174 views)
Tasted by Redteeth on 9/5/2022: Gave this bottle a double decant. the cork was sound and there was a lot of sediment. Tasting notes very consistent with my 2020 review. It was nice to drink and a pretty good value for my purchase price on release. However, nothing super special. (1992 views)
Tasted by pavel_p on 7/27/2022 & rated 92 points: Pnp - had a glass with steak at home and then continued with the wine on its own. Two years since my last bottle and the wine has clearly lost the tightness and is now open from pulling the cork. Dark garnet with a thin translucent rim. The nose shows a bit lighter and fresher than the full bodied palate. Not overripe but a bit heavy and lazy for my taste, without necessarily showing a lot of depth and complexity. Perhaps this will develop with more age... There are still quite some tannins but for now covered by the remarkably rich fruit at age 13. Short to medium finish.
Does not have the sweetness of Napa but otherwise it does resemble a good but not great Cali Cab. Will be interesting to follow over the next years to see where the wine goes from here. 91-92 (+?) (2512 views)
Tasted by brianakrin on 6/15/2022 & rated 91 points: Sweet , rich, low tannin, some bricking ,a bit unidimensional (2455 views)
Tasted by daosailor on 5/17/2022 & rated 92 points: Full-bodied wine with good size tannins...shows no signs of aging. Tasted during one of our Monday Night Tastings...many thought it was a big Napa Cabernet/California Bordeaux blend. While it was very good I'd say this needs another 2-5 years before tasting again. (2559 views)
Tasted by Bordeaux 2013 on 4/24/2022 & rated 95 points: This wine is now mature. Excellent with some air. I guess it will continue to stay there / evolve well over the next ten years. (2662 views)
Tasted by ChristoBretts on 4/11/2022 & rated 91 points: Decanted and drank over two days. Medium to heavy body. Some bricking. Nose of wet rocks, black fruit and tar. Much the same on the palate with wet rocks dominating along with drying tannin. Would be better without the somewhat overwhelming alcohol. Still a good buy at current price. (2689 views)
Tasted by bennymac on 2/25/2022 & rated 89 points: Ruby clear. Earth, blue and blackberry. Lively moythfeel with lengthy full mouth tannin. A bit watery, but balanced. Acid core is ther to hold up with food. Length is not huge. (2602 views)
Tasted by ChristoBretts on 1/23/2022 & rated 93 points: Decanted six hours. Full body. Fragrance of blackberry compote, creosote and wet granite, taste matches, along with drying tannin leading to a long enjoyable finish. The last bottle I had of this was not decanted long enough - decant and enjoy this wine now, perhaps another year. This bottle was quite good and likely at its peak. (2802 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

St. Estèphe

Read more about St. Estephe and its wines Whereas the first activity recorded in Saint-Estèphe goes back as far as the Middle Bronze Age, the first vines date from the Roman Occupation. But it was the Bordeaux merchants who by aging and selling Saint-Estèphe wines themselves were largely responsible for this appellation's fame. And in the nineteenth century, noted for its prosperity, the great estates of today were created. The movement continues today with the merging of small estates.

A land of great wines, Saint-Estèphe is situated almost in the centre of the Médoc, close to the Gironde Estuary. The appellation is equidistant from Bordeaux and the Pointe de Grave.
The beds of soil are characterized by their remarkable diversity, the result of their undulating relief and excellent drainage. Quartz and well-rounded pebbles mingled with light, sandy surface soil are found everywhere, giving the wines a distinctive finesse. And the subsoil is made up of the famous Saint-Estèphe limestone, which outcrops on the west of the commune.

Tasting
Thanks to ideal conditions of climate and geology, Saint-Estèphe wines are characterized by their sturdy qualities and robust constitution. Accordingly, they can be laid down for a very long time while yet preserving their youth and freshness. Distinguished by a subsoil which is more clayey than that in the other communal appellations which lie by the river, the wine here attains a distinctive individuality : a very rich tannic structure, a fine deep red colour and an exceptional backbone with aromas of great finesse.

Production conditions (Decree dated September 11, 1936):

In order to have the right to the Saint-Estèphe appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the communes of Saint-Estèphe, "excluding any parcels in that area which are situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
