Tasted by BigGDaddy on 9/4/2019 & rated 91 points: I’m always hesitant to buy older wines because it’s hard to know where the bottle has sat and I have experienced only about a 50% success rate in purchasing wines greater than 10 years after their release date. That being said, I was very happy with this bottle despite the brittle cork that crumbled and had me gasping but do believe it’s on it’s top side of evolution and should be consumed now. The color shows the brownish hue of a well-aged Brunello. It was smooth, and still had a nice tartness to the finish. Sour cherries and a nice floral scent. Frankly much preferred the 2010 Brunello after it, but was very happy with its flavor and it did compliment the steak-tips nicely. If you have it; open it up. It was ready after being filtered through the Venturi (with a screen) and decanted for about an hour. (2953 views)
Tasted by Visca on 11/25/2018: Good (2972 views)
Tasted by gzim on 10/24/2018 & rated 89 points: Decanted for 3 hours, still showing quiet young. Served Blind along side the '76. Revisit in 5+ years (3021 views)
Tasted by HansO on 8/31/2018 & rated 90 points: Chocolate, dark plums and a beautiful nose. The wine still has character with subdued but present tannins and a good acidity. Great. Spot on with the house made lasagne. Unfortunately my last bottle. Still some riserva’s in stock. (3078 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 10/14/2017 & rated 91 points: Nose: The nose is pretty and nuanced from the getgo with balsamico, violets, rose petals, red cherries, potpourri, iodine, anise seed, dried red berries, leather, ash tones, and a touch of earth. There is excellent layering to the nose as well.

Taste: Medium bodies with medium plus tannins and medium plus acidity. The feel is refined and feminine with a resolved quality to the tannins backed up with balsamico, violets, rose petals, red cherries, potpourri, dried red berries, leather, and a touch of ash.

Overall: This feels like it’s drinking at or quite close to its apex. It is gorgeous right away with an underlying savoriness that I love from Sangiovese and especially Brunello. It shows off what aging can do even for a humble normale from a long time and ancient producer. (4460 views)
Tasted by D. Fulton on 5/12/2017 flawed bottle: corked (3884 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 4/17/2016 & rated 91 points: Cherry, plum, cedar, star anise and leather. Long finish. Delightful: in peak drinking window. (5219 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 4/16/2016 & rated 91 points: Medium red with slight browning. Very nice secondary nose, earth, dark fruit, cedar and black cherry. Earthy full flavours and a slightly tannic finish.

In a really nice place right now. (5018 views)
Tasted by Poisey on 2/1/2015 & rated 90 points: Leafy earthy notes with leather and coffee bean. Dry tart berry citrus like finish. Lingering dry tannin. Round and silky. (6488 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 8/25/2014 & rated 90 points: Nose: There is a pretty understatement to the nose with roasted herbs, red cherries, star anise, violets, roses, and some spice tones.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity and good tannins. The feel is classy with a real savory touch and roasted herbs, red cherries, violets, roses, and some dark red berries.

Overall: This seemed slightly faded at first, but with more air it really came together. This is a lovely Brunello that just needs a little bit of time to rev up. This is starting to show some maturity, but there is a long life ahead of it. (6135 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 6/15/2014 & rated 90 points: A decently good, if unspectacular BdM. It had a pretty nose - lots of fresh cherries and wild berries laced with gently sweet floral scents, some dried herbs and just a hint of bloody meat. Attractive. The palate was still very youthful coming across rather reticent, with a tart, tomato-ey acidity being the first thing to hit the palate, before some darker, almost plum-like fruit tones started showing up. There was a nice clarity and balance to this though, with a freshness that spoke of the vintage. With time, it opened up in the glass, with the fruit coming out more alongside a classic touch of beef and tomato stew, a dash of spice, and just that little drying, brambly woodiness and bittersweet herb at the edge of the finish. This needs time yet, easily 5-10 years more. it is decent with food though, and should improve slightly with time. (5133 views)
Tasted by Jochems on 11/7/2013 & rated 92 points: We had this bottle alongside a Frescobaldi Ripe al Convento '95 Riserva. That made it initially look pale in comparison. But with a little more air this wine really started to shine and proved to be some fine Brunello in its own right.
It shows dark cherry and blackberry on the nose with some leather and floral hints (not as distinguished as a few years back). It is full bodied and developing some of this typical Brunello smoothness with refined tannins and some sweetness of fruit. The finish is long and sweet.

This wine seems to be gradually opening up again. The above notes were taken about 3 hours after opening the bottle and letting it slow-ox. The last glas was consumed the next day and seemed to be fading a little.
Give it perhaps a few more years to reach its peak. Drink now - 2018. (4585 views)
Tasted by slippytoad on 4/13/2013 & rated 88 points: Probably past its peak now, brick red and semi-cloudy. Lots of character though, fun to drink. (5362 views)
Tasted by davidga75 on 7/24/2012: This starts out with a meaty, earthy nose and hints of band-aid that opens up to dark fruits and spice more with air....I can see the notes of "Brett" that other reviewers mention with this wine, but with this bottle it adds complexity to the wine rather than dominating it, so I don't find fault with it (Tempier Bandol anyone?). The palate is medium bodied and shows spiced red fruits and a little bit of the funk that came through on the nose. The tannins have resolved nicely, and there is still enough acidity on the finish to keep it fresh; this wine is in a nice place right now if you like the style....it definitely isn't a "classic" style of Brunello, and with the meaty/earthy funk it doesn't show much Sangiovese character, but it has good complexity and should drink nicely over the next couple of years.  Tasted by swade on 4/29/2012 & rated 74 points: Mature, brick dust rim. Clean nose to start, then opened to brett, which obscured anything the nose may have had to offer. "Audouzed" three hours then let breathe in the glass for two hours. Cherry jam, tobacco and brine on the palate. Moderately tannic, tart, short and drying finish. Not corked or flawed, but dirty. Not very good or enjoyable. (5673 views)
Tasted by swapdoc on 4/20/2012: Store bought, 2 bottles. After 3 hrs of decanting, fruit is becoming more lush and integrated with tannins. Traditional, structured mature wine, showing signs of age -- hints of raisin, barnyard. Seems perhaps more tired than other 01's. Would drink now with plenty of aeration. B (5496 views)
Tasted by fgar59 on 4/5/2012: Tasted past it's prime the first day (even after a 6 hour decant). Very earthy smell. Put it aside and tasted again teh next night and it was very good. Don't think it's going to last much longer. (4446 views)
Tasted by Jurgens on 3/11/2012 & rated 91 points: Very good but drink now (3738 views)
Tasted by urban_dk on 1/28/2012 & rated 90 points: Bouquet seemed off at first, but soon mellowed to reveal kirsch notes. Strong cherry-preserve flavors on the palate, but the finish is understated. Better drink it now. (3232 views)
Tasted by madia on 1/24/2012 & rated 90 points: Expressive and complex on the nose but disappointing in the palate. Aromas of fruit, earth and smoke. Light body, a bit lacking structure. Ready to drink. Doesn't worth cellaring it longer. (3217 views)
Tasted by dkfinancial on 1/20/2012 & rated 87 points: Significant bottle variation. Most recent bottles were noticeably earthy & had some brett. Tannins are mostly resolved, and I think any "good" bottles are ready to drink. (3268 views)
Tasted by dkfinancial on 12/24/2011 & rated 90 points: Variable quality. 3 in 10 bottles corked or very corky tasting. Clean bottles are ready to drink, tannins fallen out, loads of tobacco, touch of brine, and lots of sweet dark fruit. Quite pleasant if the bottle is good - but is at peak and I see no upside from holding. (3473 views)
Tasted by the godfather on 4/10/2011: I think this was corked but I this has good stuffing (4769 views)
Tasted by Abenthen on 3/29/2011: Good balance still needs more cellar time but opens very nice in a couple of hours. (4869 views)
Tasted by Al-Vino on 2/21/2011 & rated 90 points: Subtle elegance that requires a long evening and an open mind to fully appreciate its complexity. This bottle was just starting to enter its drinking window, so now harm in laying this wine down for a few more years. (5209 views)

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
