Community Tasting Notes (average 93.2 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 18 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Peech on 7/31/2023 & rated 95 points: The nose was much bigger with lots of flint and minerals, but otherwise similar to Twisted and Bent. This was also showing some metallic notes, along with vanilla and Chinese licorice. (308 views)
Tasted by soyhead on 6/3/2023: fun to try, not thinking much will come of a 20 yr old domestic white rhone blend, and I must say we were pleasantly surprised; smells and tastes a bit like a riesling on attack, but with a heavier body and oilier texture. nevertheless we were happy to move onto the white burgs. "hussies are quite rare there are only about 1400 of these." (420 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 5/30/2018 & rated 95 points: Jailbreak Brewery restaurant opening SQN wine dinner with Justin Bonner (Jailbreak Brewery, Laurel, MD): I last drank this in 2012 from a mag and wrote “if this follows the aging curve of the rhone whites, perhaps need to be cellared for another ten years but the oak component is a lot stronger here.”. This aged surprisingly well. Once again en magnum. Complex Rhone nose displaying ripe yellow fruit, peach, clementine, apricot tart, strong vanilla, beeswax, smoke, spicy spices and limestone. There is only a slight hint of heat. The oak note is not transformed to vanilla. Excellent concentration, dense and oily but not heavy, bright acidity, strong mineral presence and a long very ripe yellow fruit and vanilla driven finish. Total surprise for me. Nevertheless, not for AFWEs. (3292 views)
Tasted by charleshetzel on 1/29/2016 & rated 96 points: SQN White Birthday Weekend tasting in Vegas (Private Residence - Las Vegas, NV): I believe this is my 4th time trying this SQN White since it's release. I believe I last tasted it in January 2015 and then prior to that in 2006 & 2007. The 4th time is a charm indeed. After approximately a 1 hour+ decant, there were still those familiar hints of petrol on the nose. The mid-palate of this dry 100% Roussanne wine was weighty, almost peach-like, with a spritz of smokey lovely orange jelly aroma. This is still a luxurious full bodied white who as a young Hussy from Alban Vineyards has matured a bit. She's starting to show some wrinkles, but hey that's ok. I actually enjoyed the less prominent alcohol this time around. The other note I detected here was the faint Orange Pez candy-like finish that hangs on at the end as if it's the one last tease as I empty my glass of The Hussy. (4998 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 8/24/2012 & rated 90 points: Lost Friday Wine Lunch - Blacksalt (Blacksalt, Washington DC): En magnum, still showing noticeable oak, vanilla, lanoline and yellows fruits. Oily palate, ripe and noticeable heat. If this follows the aging curve of the rhone whites, perhaps need to be cellared for another ten years but the oak component is a lot stronger here. (7480 views)
Tasted by Stefanos T. on 6/19/2010 & rated 95 points: From magnum.
Very impressive, full bodied whith with smoky mineral and oaky notes, exuberant tropical fruit, viscous but not heavy.
An astonishing white which was marginally bettered by the SQN Albino from 2001. (4732 views)
Tasted by psmith on 5/22/2010: Birthday Bash with Pig (Chicagoland): From 1.5L. Petrol notes. Somewhat top-heavy. Waxy, weighty body, with lots of alcohol. Fading. (5213 views)
Tasted by MatthewF on 5/22/2010: The Greatest Pig Roast Ever?? (Chicagoland): From 1.5L Bottle. Orange marmalade nose with petrol, smoke, and vanilla. Waxy fruit on the palate. Full bodied and showing its alcohol; a bit out of balance. Medium finish. (6883 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 5/22/2010 & rated 85 points: Great Wine with a Pig on a Spit (Elmhurst IL): From magnum. Some interesting candied citrus peel on nose and palate, but fruit was largely faded on the palate and there was too much heat from the first sip. (7585 views)
Tasted by coopdeville on 4/13/2008 & rated 98 points: Super golden. Viscous, silky silky mouth feel, yet still high acid and retains freshness. Wine of the evening. (5235 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 6/27/2007 & rated 94 points: David Niederauer Wine Dinner at Sainte Claire Club (Sainte Claire Club, San Jose, California): Rich golden yellow color; rich, buttery, oily nose; rich Roussanne, oily, mineral palate with butter note; long finish (3097 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 10/28/2006: Chicago SQN Postcard Offline (Mel Hill's home - Barrington, IL): Nose has honey and waxy fruits. Fruit is subdued on the palate with alcohol and oak asserting themselves. Seems past peak drinking. (4729 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 10/28/2006: Sine Qua Non "Postcard" Dinner (Chez Hill - Barrington IL): Surprisingly fresh (in contrast to other older whites tonight) with great floral tones. Subdued and balanced. At its peak, drink up in next year or two. (1873 views)
Tasted by JLeader on 10/27/2006 & rated 91 points: Quite interesting and powerful. Tastes like old vines. Very dense and layered. (3523 views)
Tasted by winefool on 10/7/2006 & rated 93 points: Medium yellow color. Forward perfumed white fruit aroma with a bit of petrol. Big rich perfumed white rhone flavors. Long finish with a bit of caramel. Group 3rd place. 93 pts. (3228 views)
Tasted by kstoddard on 5/4/2006 & rated 96 points: Phoenix eRP Offline - Rhone Varietals (Backstreet Wine Salon, Phoenix): From magnum (4421 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
