Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 58 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by oldwines on 5/22/2021 & rated 94 points: Decanted at 6:30pm and tasted over 5 hours with some left for a later date. Dark, nearly opaque garnet color with little to no sign of age. At first the nose was full of tarry and oak derived scents like vanilla and some char/smoke but this gave way over the first couple hours to a much more nuanced and perfumed nose. Lilacs, plum, licorice, cherry, baking spices and pipe tobacco abound on the nose at hour 5. Palate still has some lightly grippy tannin, plenty of acidity for continued aging and is equally complex and evolving over time with air. Getting more complex and elegant as time went on. Finish is very long with an emphasis on the vanilla and plummy notes. This is a much different (and better) wine after several hours in the decanter. Great with grilled steaks. (1767 views)
Tasted by Buick455 on 11/29/2020 & rated 93 points: Improved since last bottle in 2016. Very good performance. Slow ox for 30min. Dark red/black'ish color. Opaque. Fruit, dark berries, spice, some complexity. Thick, jammy texture, very pleasent. Long finish. (1480 views)
Tasted by wine4ever on 9/21/2020: Our last bottle....they've all been excellent and it was fun watching their evolution up to this point. For us, this particular wine peaked between 10-18 years of age. This last bottle seems to indicate to us that this wine has now firmly entered the late maturity stage, which is still excellent, just different - not as vibrant and youthful, but more mellow and 'earthy'. Still a joy to drink and should be for a few more years at least. (1511 views)
Tasted by PIntag on 12/14/2018: Rich, modern-styled. Good depth and has good balance. In a very good place right now and should hold here for a while. I'd prefer a little more Sangio character, but there's no doubt this is great drink right now. (2135 views)
Tasted by Bro on 11/9/2018 & rated 90 points: J’avais oublié mes observations précédentes ... Ce vin était malheureusement sur la pente descendante ... Avons été déçu suite à la dégustation d’un Luis Canas 2005 avant ... (2300 views)
Tasted by N.Bonaparte on 9/1/2018 & rated 92 points: Another good showing. 30 min decant- overall good balance and very pleasant. Will continue to hold for another 5 years. (1666 views)
Tasted by Vino Me on 8/25/2018 & rated 92 points: Opened by Mark. No formal notes. 92 points. (1679 views)

Tasted by wine4ever on 5/29/2018 & rated 94 points: Another great showing for this wine. Transported us back to Italy. Wonderful flavors and aromas. As always, great with food. It has developed secondary characteristics which just add to the complexity and enjoyment of the wine. One left, which we will probably consume in the next 2-3 years. (1058 views)
Tasted by Bro on 3/19/2018 & rated 93 points: La grande finale d’une soirée très réussie ! ... 👍🤡 (1384 views)
Tasted by N.Bonaparte on 3/4/2018 & rated 92 points: 30 min decant, medium bodied, up front spice, fruit is nearly gone but it does not detract from experience. Good balanced wine. In prime and will hold for a few more years. (1229 views)
Tasted by Buick455 on 10/29/2016 & rated 92 points: very nice Brunello. No decant. Dark red/black with a brownísh hue. Light brown/orange edge. Opaque. Nose was a bit restricted in the begining. Some fruit still on the palate. However more mature notes showed. Very delicate. Would have expected a bit more power from a 2001. Long finish. (2158 views)
Tasted by wine4ever on 7/12/2016 & rated 94 points: Lovely wine and in it's peak drinking window. Very slight bricking on the edges, a touch of leather on the nose, full bodied but very elegant. A huge array of dark fruits (cherry, plums, currants), plus herbs, and spices. Great structure and balance, good acidity. A great food wine. Should easily drink well for another 3-5 years. (2206 views)

Tasted by WilD on 11/13/2015 & rated 92 points: Great complex Brunello. Dark cherries, nice oak influances. Great performance. (2629 views)
(2596 views)
Tasted by oldwines on 8/14/2015 & rated 94 points: Lovely, well balanced modern style wine with nice fruit and oak on the nose. Color is dark garnet. On the palate there is lots of black plum, licorice, vanilla, earthy mushroom and graphite. Nice complexity and very chewy mouth feel. Moderately long finish. Lots of life left. (2064 views)
Tasted by King JR on 5/1/2015 & rated 92 points: Delicious smooth. Ready to go. (1951 views)
Tasted by oaadumm on 1/3/2015 & rated 93 points: Exceptionnel (2145 views)
Tasted by wine4ever on 7/3/2014 & rated 92 points: Drinking great now, but still plenty of tannins. Heavier bodied than most brunellos and tons of fruit and herbal notes (cherry, plum, currants, thyme, sage). Definitely italian. Good structure but needs a bit more time to integrate - will revisit in 2-3 years. (2228 views)
Tasted by NeuroWine on 2/22/2014 & rated 94 points: consistent with prior tasting in 2009. A little more integrated, very nice with a bison ribeye roast, asparagus, and papas bravas. Will probably hold for a while but doesn't seem like it will improve much more with additional age. (2701 views)
Tasted by rsbeck on 2/5/2014 & rated 94 points: Popped, breathed in bottle 60 minutes, poured, followed over next 90 minutes. This was singing from the first sip. Shows a touch of French Oak influence, but it's acceptably subtle to my palate. Rich, complex, well balanced Brunello with a lingering finish. Drinking very well right now, but has the stuffing to age and possibly improve. (2455 views)
Tasted by MRichman on 2/4/2014: Italian wine night with the Sonoma Group (Cucina Paradiso): Firm, strong, dense. Tobacco, leather, earth and a nice floral note. Good complexity. Drinking really well. Excellent. (2350 views)
Tasted by GBK on 5/2/2013 & rated 92 points: Big, bold beautiful; needs some time to open; drinking well now but will last for several more years. (3096 views)
Tasted by King JR on 9/18/2012 & rated 92 points: Beautiful bottle, lovely fruit, pretty cassic Brunello. (3221 views)

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
