Tasted by Krassens on 12/26/2023 & rated 92 points: Beautiful. Has evolved from light cherries to a deep mature mix of cocoa, raisins, coffee, leather, markedly dry and long with a bit of sandy tannins lingering. (83 views)
Tasted by JVG on 10/23/2021: Medium-deep blackberry juice color. Deep, dark, and alluring on the nose, with rich, ripe dark fruit aromas of blackberry, mulberry, and plum, as well as dark chocolate and crème, charred wood, and smoke. You can also smell the strength of the wine—just gives a powerful impression. All of that comes through on the palate, held together by a very firm structure of drying tannin supporting its broad, muscular frame. On the finish, there's a spiciness that doesn't present itself on the nose, and plenty of lingering ripe fruit flavor to balance nicely against the tannin.

This is an excellent Dolcetto—one of the best I can remember—and a really classy, luxurious bottle of wine. A great example of a big, bold wine that nonetheless remains elegant and well balanced. (556 views)

Tasted by CheviotCellar on 3/11/2021 & rated 89 points: Much better than the first attempt, and took my own advice about not decanting.
The extra years did this well. Tartness and flatness are gone. Wine has terrific tannins, great weight, and just enough acid without becoming acidic. Nose has caramel, chocolate, red currant. Palate is similar with rich flavors, blackberries more cocoa and those satisfying tannins. Glad I waited this one out. (712 views)
Tasted by CheviotCellar on 8/25/2019 & rated 86 points: Based on other reviews, gave this a 3 hour decant. I didn’t find the wine to be overly tannic but the acid is high. For whatever reason it did not pair with tomato sauce well at all. This is better with charcuterie, chocolate, tangy berries or perhaps a cream sauce dish.

Purple body. Alluring nose of sandalwood and cedar that comes and goes. Palate is ho hum table wine, a little primary, that could benefit from more drying elements and spice. Next time I won’t decant and will pair with simpler fare.

We are big Pira fans and hadn’t yet tried this entry-level wine. Has some promise but probably will just stick to the barolos. (1117 views)
Tasted by danme on 3/28/2019 & rated 84 points: Save another year or two. Now a bit tart and tannic but fruity character of dark berries and some sage and licorice. (1147 views)
Tasted by Krassens on 3/11/2019 & rated 90 points: Great intensity, awesome qpr, many years to go. (866 views)
Tasted by RobinHeimdahl on 3/9/2019 & rated 87 points: First bottle was corked.

Second botte - good. (1019 views)

Dolcetto

Varietal character (Appellation America)

Dolcetto, a northern Italian varietal from the Piedmont region, is a lighter bodied red. This wine is fruity and means 'little sweet one' in Italian. Some will opt to put a slight chill on it. Perfect with Mediterrean cuisine such as grilled meats and vegetables. Enjoy as a summertime delight. from (Woodward Canyon website)

Alba

Consorzio di Tutela Barolo Barbaresco Alba Langhe e Roero

Alba is a town and comune of Piedmont, Italy, in the province of Cuneo. It is considered the capital of the hilly area of Langhe, and is famous for the white truffle, peach and wine production. Piedmont is in the Northwestern region of Italy, bordering France and Switzerland. Piedmont is predominantly a plain where the water flows from the Swiss and French Alps to form the headwaters of the Po river. The major wine producing areas are in the southern portion of the region in the hills known as the "Langhe". Here the people speak a dialect that is 1/3 French and 2/3 Italian that portrays their historical roots. Their cuisine is one of the most creative and interesting in Italy. Nebbiolo is the King grape here, producing Barolo and Barbaresco. In addition, the Barbera and Dolcetto are the workhorse grapes that produce the largest quantity of wine. Piedmont is predominantly a red wine producing area. There are a few whites made in Piedmont, and the Moscato grape produces a large volume of sweet, semi-sweet and sparkling wines as well.
