Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.8 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 71 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Livonietisr on 8/29/2022 & rated 93 points: This blend of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon spent 18 months in French oak. Perfect cork. Deep ruby color. Intense aromas of plum, dark cherry, spices, tobacco, leather. Wine is dry and intense. Medium+ acidity, plenty of silky tannins, taste of plums, cherry and spices. Balanced and long. (946 views)
Tasted by Oldworlddrinker on 9/7/2019 & rated 89 points: The score is unjustly taken down as bottle after bottle I am experiencing crumbling corks. Such a shame for a Chianti that shares many of the tasting profile of Brunello (2235 views)
Tasted by maxima on 12/10/2018 flawed bottle: Bouchonnée! (3238 views)
Tasted by Leto South on 12/9/2018 & rated 92 points: Decanted 2 hrs. Almost black, opaque. Large bq w cherries, oak, smoke, underbrush, a flowery touch. Medium-to-full body w rounded tannins, good acidity, still plenty of dark cherry fruit, hint of anis. Long, balanced aftertaste w complexity. A very elegant, balanced wine, now at full maturity. (2555 views)
Tasted by Mascarello59 on 6/22/2018 & rated 88 points: Mature complex nose but slightly metallic taste. Felt like it was time to have drunk some time ago. (3007 views)
Tasted by Oldworlddrinker on 1/11/2018 & rated 90 points: Wow, what a finding! It is at peak, yes, but I would argue that tasted blind, this would be called out as Brunello, it has the structure, finesse and flavor profile of a good Brunello (2695 views)
Tasted by Boupboup on 12/8/2017 & rated 92 points: Wow... (1857 views)
Tasted by tsdv on 8/7/2017 & rated 89 points: smoothing out a bit, still has dark flavors and almost full body, traditional style, very good CC. Plenty of life left. (2049 views)
SUPERBE! (1895 views)
Tasted by Jchen01854 on 7/20/2017: Dark red with slight yellow hue. Nice fragrance especially upon open. Tight tannin with red fruits and some bitterness of coco and leather initially, but addes more black and some sweetness on second day. Tannin also smoother then. Medium to long finish. (1545 views)
Tasted by olracx62 on 6/24/2017 & rated 92 points: last bottle of three. Elegance and roundness are the name of the game. Underbrush and earth, graphite but also ripe red fruit that perfectly melts. Pleasant and velvety, tasty and classy. Will be at best for some years still, up to 2019 at least. In a fresh day & night al La Thuile under the Alps (1579 views)
Tasted by BVal on 9/2/2016 & rated 89 points: Color: medium ruby core -> light ruby rim with a touch of garnet. Bouquet of cherries, oak, a little tar and a slight metallic edge. Palate showing forest floor, sour cherry, leather and anisette. Medium bodied with some coarse tannins floating through on the medium-long finish. A bit too tannic for my taste . . . and I'm not sure this is going upwards. (2402 views)
(2593 views)
Tasted by Alessio on 10/21/2015 & rated 88 points: Gran bel Chianti, bel naso e buona persistenza. Tannini presenti ma morbidi. (3342 views)
Tasted by OliverC on 8/21/2015 & rated 93 points: Wonderful after an hour in the decanter, lots of cherries coming through after some time. Very well balanced and integrated. A joy. (3244 views)
Tasted by cweiss on 6/28/2015: From magnum. Early maturity by color and palate. Quite a ripe and rich Chianti, as is the house style, but plenty of acidity for balance, good length. Judging by magnum enjoy now or give it another 5 years. (3261 views)
Tasted by tsdv on 6/1/2015 & rated 90 points: Dark. Intense, leather, earth, graphite. (2575 views)
Tasted by olracx62 on 4/3/2015 & rated 93 points: very intense and complex chianti aged in oak barrel. Probably in the right drinking window as most tannins have smoothed. Leather and graphite over some roasted coffee and earth. Balanced oak. Best paired with scottona sottofiletto in a rainy evening at LT. (2351 views)
Tasted by olracx62 on 10/24/2014 & rated 92 points: dark ink at the eye. Superb nose, truly complex of earth, forest, pencil and liquorice with some spices. In the mouth the velvety structure is evident although some complexity evanishes and falls short in roundness. But nontheless it demonstrates to be a truly outstanding Chianti. It is somehow like a complex puzzle where a few pieces are missing but you can easily have a picture of the whole. medium-to-long finish. Drinking window open for at least three years (2017-2018). 92-93 (2478 views)
Tasted by 911henrik on 9/26/2014 & rated 89 points: Classic. A little overdue. Would however rather put my money on Don Tommaso from Principe Corsini. (2381 views)
Tasted by wynnewood500 on 7/18/2014: Popped and poured in a small Italian restaurant sitting out side. The setting and the wine were heavenly. Dark, opaque wine. Medium to full bodied. Nose was open even in the small glasses. Dark fruits and spicy flavors. Integrated tannins. (2524 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 2/16/2014 & rated 90 points: Three Italians (QPR!) (Gio's): From Magnum. Very nice wine, still drinking young. Ruby/purple in color. The nose has cherries, dark cherries and a bit of crunchy leaves. Perhaps some cough drops as well. On the palate, nice texture. Medium bodied. cherries, some cherry liqueur. Nice balance. Works great with food. A nice start. (3128 views)
Tasted by Sthel on 12/12/2013 & rated 91 points: Aromas terrosos, frutas negras secas, chocolate e especiarias. Taninos macios. Bem equilibrado. Bom corpo, final persistente. (2707 views)
Hyper long.
(2339 views)

Marchesi Mazzei Chianti Classico Castello di Fonterutoli

Predominantly Sangiovese with Malvasia Nera and Colorino

Sangiovese Blend

Sangiovese blend is used in CellarTracker for Italian wines to represent wines predominantly made of Sangiovese and blended with traditional Italian grapes. It is different than SuperTuscan which is a blend of Sangiovese with non-traditional (eg Bordeaux) varieties, often in closer to equal portions. For example, Chianti is at least 80% Sangiovese and will always be listed Sangiovese blend.
