Community Tasting Notes (average 92.2 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 18 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by chablis28 on 1/30/2023 & rated 93 points: Opened at home and poured a good size glass for a slow-oxed 2hrs prior to taking over to my buddy Dave's for wine & food dinner. This was in a very good place tonight. Fully resolved and layered w/o tripping over to pre-mox. Started out with a little edgy oak that soon dissipated in glass. The concentration & length are impressive. Excellent Puligny power, citrus & minerality. Last of 3 btls. I wouldn't wait if I owned more. Mature translucent gold appropriate for nearing 13yrs old.  Tasted by rocknroller on 1/30/2023 & rated 94 points: Chez Dalluge does Momofuko w/ Champagne, Whites, & Reine des Bois Vertical (Chez Dalluge, MN): Light golden color. Drank a glass over 90 minutes. Geez, i was just captivated by this. I love the Mandarin orange notes, orange zest, stone fruit, light gunflint, chalk and stellar minerality with this long, juicy and tangy, tangerine infused finish. I loved the contrast between this and the '14 Ramonet and had a hard time choosing a favorite. Fun one Craig, and great flight. (665 views)
Tasted by acyso on 11/20/2022 & rated 90 points: Dinner at D Cuisine (Chicago, IL): Very sappy, and for the most part, showing a lot of slightly cooked orchard fruit. It's not premox but I could potentially see it going that way. On the other hand, I really do like the concentration of fruit here (apples and pears), though I wish this may have had a little more freshness and acidic zing. (1239 views)
Tasted by DaleW on 6/13/2022: No pox here, fresh and lively, weightless yet full. Pear, hazelnut, citrus blossoms. Good showing. A- (496 views)
Tasted by DaleW on 6/2/2020: Delicious, not shy, rich pear fruit with integrated oak notes. Good acid, full, nice finish. Holds well over couple days. B+/A- (1015 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 11/8/2019 & rated 91 points: This has improved, slightly, since my first btl 26 months ago. The color, upon opening, was a maturing deeper gold that later lightened a bit in glass. Zero signs of premox. I opened this 90 minutes before dinner and slow-oxed in glass and btl. This is elegant, minerally, with lemon and still a bit of vanilla to integrate. What keeps this from being great is a less than expected level of complexity and finesse. Solid but not what I hoped for as Referts is thought to be a great site for Carillon. I'm still not loving the split up of the old Luis Carillon estate where every bottle seemed to overachieve. The Luis Carillon village wine was sweet spot for me and the ler Crus further excelled. Today, Jacaques comes closest to the old estate IMO but his wines also command a heftier price tag. Apparently the market agrees with me. Just had a killer 2016 Jacques Carillon Perrieres a month ago. I have one more 2010 Referts that I'll wait a year or 2 on. I may decant the next one. Alc 13.5% (1284 views)
Tasted by DaleW on 10/4/2019: Great showing, full and rich but with lively acidic backbone. Pear, hazelnut, and wet stones. A- (956 views)
Tasted by Mrbuzz on 9/10/2019 & rated 93 points: Last of 3 bottles, first tried in 2013 and noted some really angry acidic energy that needed calming. Next years bottle still in need of calming. SO...5 years later..there is plenty of richness of ripe yellow pitted fruits...full bodied, some honey and almond butter with age...good dose of vanilla oak spice that works well with the richness...wonderful savory crushed sea shell minerality, subtle smoke, sea salted caramel sweetness. The intense acidity has integrated even more so, but is STILL a force in this wine! Creates nice freshness and energy...but still a little sharp and bitter at times. The ingredients are all there...it is really tasty as hell...just needs another 5 or so years to get that acid to play nicely. Too bad this is my last stop...would love to see how this one plays out.  Tasted by ccn on 7/21/2019 & rated 92 points: Very elegant with an interestingly racy/spicy nose, balanced, good acidity and length. Still relatively primary. (900 views)
Tasted by nectar14 on 5/31/2019 & rated 94 points: Delicious stuff. Elegant aromatics including white flowers and sleek mineral tones atop perfumed citrus (lemon). Excellent length. This was served to a group of guys who tend to drink big reds (Cali Cab, Bordeaux) and all commented on how pleasant it was, and how they ought be drinking more white Burgundy. Objective accomplished. (729 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 9/15/2017 & rated 90 points: Opened an hour before dinner & slow oxed. Poured into Riedel Montrachet stems. This has a ways to go before its truly enjoyable. Pale gold color. Almost aromatically mute with faint floral aromas. Intense bright acidity with tart lemon / apple, minerals and a semi bitter oak spice that needs to integrate. Finishes dry. Paired fine with crab stuffed sole tonight but can't see opening another until 2020. 13.5% alc. A decant might be wise here? I'm missing the old Louis Carillon combined estate. (1626 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 7/1/2015 & rated 92 points: White Burgs (Mpls, MN): Light gold color. 2oz pour over an hour; drank next to the village P-M. Intense nose with lemon pledge, lemon, more weight, more depth, brioche, light toast, much creaminess and better length. Very fresh with the acidity. (2377 views)
Tasted by Mrbuzz on 12/10/2014 & rated 93 points: Integrating nicely, but still needs more years to shift gears. Plenty of energy here….subtle smoke, lime pie, blossoms, crushed sea shells, grey salt caramels. Pure, creamy fruit….all so tasty…but you just know there will be OH so much more in a few years! Wish I had a case to follow. (2214 views)
Tasted by BuzzzzOff on 5/27/2014: Drank at Restaurant Martin Wishart, Edinburgh, United Kingdom. Nice, fresh nose, round, good minerality, a rouch too much acidity in the finish. (1646 views)
Tasted by rsbeck on 3/1/2014 & rated 93 points: Similar to previous notes. Has developed a tiny bit since last tasting. The oak spice, although tasteful and subtle, needs to be absorbed. I have little doubt that it will and then this, which is lovely now, will be even better. (2147 views)
Tasted by Mrbuzz on 7/24/2013 & rated 92 points: Pretty rich and oily fruit, but with HUGE razor sharp acidity. Nice tartness of green apple, white peach, lemon/lime fruit.....some smoke and honey to go along with the wonderfully floral lime blossom and key lime pie. Thank God there is enough creamy ripe fruit to hold up to that acid! Love the chalk dust and saline minerality as well. Needs a couple more years to calm that acidity...should age extremely well! +pts (2240 views)
Tasted by rsbeck on 11/1/2012 & rated 93 points: Round yet precise with bright acids, beautiful fruit, pear, citrus, mineral, acacia blossom, and a sprinkling of oak spice. Excellent balance and intensity. 93+ (1829 views)
Tasted by affordableCollector on 11/1/2012 & rated 91 points: oak, lime, citrus peel, floral, barnyard straw, brush of vanilla, oak, on the nose. (2019 views)

The Chardonnay Grape

Les Referts

On weinlagen-info

Les Referts is a Premier Cru vineyard in the famed Puligny-Montrachet appellation of Burgundy's Cote de Nuits sub-region. Like most of the village, Les Referts is planted to Chardonnay, although this vineyard's position at the base of the hill gives a slightly richer, generally less floral wine than is usually associated with Puligny-Montrachet wines.

The 5.5 hectare (13 acre) site lies north of Puligny town, on the commune boundary with Meursault. Meursault's Charmes vineyard is just across the road.

In Puligny-Montrachet commune itself, Les Referts sits below the Les Combettes vineyard to the west with Les Perrières running along the slope to the southwest. The vineyards below, to the east of Les Referts, are only classified for use in village-level wines.

Les Referts' position at the base of the slope means that while the soil is still calcareous, it is deeper and slightly richer here. This clayey marl has a higher proportion of iron, betrayed by its red color, and the wines are more muscular and heavier than most Puligny-Montrachet as a result.

The vineyard has a gentle slope, facing southeast and giving the vines plenty of exposure to the morning and early afternoon sun. However, Les Referts is less exposed to cooler influences than in the vineyards at slightly higher elevations, and so there is sometimes a tendency for the grapes to overripen and lose acidity.

Les Referts Premier Cru wines are often compared to Meursault wines rather than Puligny as they are more closely aligned with the signature style of that commune.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
