Straightforward Shiraz. No depth or surprises. Good for a second bottle. (1033 views) | | Tasted by SD-Wine-Lover on 11/8/2020: Enjoyable - but I didn’t feel it was a $33 bottle. Didn’t have quite the depth or finish I’d expect. (1203 views) | | Tasted by ashikoh on 1/25/2020 & rated 87 points: ruby violet; blackberry, licorice, vanilla, peppercorns; dark berries, chocolate; full bodied, 14.5% ABV, finishes with mouth puckering acidity; basket pressed, open fermenter, spends 21 months in French and American oak (1526 views) | | Tasted by Burgundy Al on 9/23/2019 & rated 89 points: Australian Far From Ordinary Tasting (Chicago Athletic Association - Chicago IL): Walkaround tasting, brief note. Rich black fruit with sweet spice that gets close to an overall sweet character, but retains a savory disposition. Good+ depth and balance, better to cellar a few years. (2469 views) | | Tasted by srh on 8/31/2019: Winebar [1 Rosé, 3 Whts, & 8 Reds] from 08/30/19 + 5 Shared Reds (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): 100% Shiraz harvested on the 17th of February, traditionally processed with open fermentation & basket pressing in our 1928 press. The wine then matured for 21 mos in AM & FR oak. The block 11 component was fermented & matured in a large FR oak foudre (holding 1426.5 Gallons). Bottling took place in February 2017. 14.5% ABV, 3.8 g/L R.S., 7.2 g/L T.A., & 3.54 pH;"
N: RIPE, blk (poss blue) berries with undertones of vanilla & hints of minerals; Intensity lurking
P: Med, poss LM, body; RNDISH entry with very NICE, ALMOST swtish frt met by an astringent pucker which, without even remotely losing contact with the init frt, transitions into a LONG, BALANCED, but still very, VERY slightly puckerish finish with a potentially elegant touch of swtness to the dusty tannins. VERY nicely done, but NEEDS through '22, I'm guessing, then at least approaching its 15th? My EXC/EXC+, & might even touch Exceptionality... eventually. 95 pts ea James Halliday & The Wine Front (Gary Walsh), 93 WA, 91 Wine & Spirits, and 90 WE + "Cellar Selection" @ $60. [This vendor's $38.95 is $6 < the lower of wine-searcher's 2 listings!]
Note: With this tasting (as opposed to 12/29/18) I felt the acidity NEEDED cellaring time to optimize this wine. (1750 views) | | Tasted by Justinagogo on 5/23/2019: 中+酸度,中+单宁,中+酒体,中等酒精,比较有骨架感(和下午喝的巴罗萨比起来瘦很多),红果,dry herbal(薰衣草),cedar, coconut, earthy, meaty; 历史最优秀的家族酒庄之一 (812 views) | | Tasted by srh on 12/29/2018: Australian Shirazes & Blends (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): N: FRAGRANTLY, ripely floral atop berries with notes of smoke; Pyrazines with swirling?
P: Med, poss LM, body; NICE, almost swtish frt met by some astringent pucker which pretty much resolves by the LONG finish with a TANGY/swtness (70:30) to the dusty tannins. For now (IF you LOVE acidity) & into '23. My EXC-/EXC, but since I *do* love acidity... ;) 95 pts The Wine Front (Gary Walsh). [I saw no U.S. source with which to compare this vendor's $38.95.] (1079 views) | | Tasted by jmcmchi on 5/5/2017: 21 months on a mixture of American and French oak leave a deep garnet with herb, cedar and blackcurrant aromas Oak shows on the smooth texture; medium body with a range of red and black berries, finishing with spice and dark chocolate (1398 views) |

| Kay Brothers Producer Website
U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)
This artisanal producer in McLaren Vale has an ancient vineyard sitting right in front of the winery. The splendid Shiraz vines are over 100 years of age. The winery itself produced between 6,500 and 10,000 cases of wine, almost all of it Shiraz, with small quantities of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. There are no white wines, although a small quantity of spectacular fortified Muscat is produced. Most of the reds spend 18 months in a combination of 50% new and 50% old American oak, but the Block 6, as well as the Hillside Shiraz, are aged in 100% American oak for 24 months. The production ranges from a low of 400 cases (in 1999 and 2000) to just over 1,000 cases from the 100+ year old vineyard that is usually cropped between 1.5-2 tons per acre.
Grateful Palate Imports website: The new Hillside vineyard had its beginnings in 1992 when cuttings taken from the 100 year old gnarled vines of Block 6 were planted on the eastern hillside of the Amery Vineyard. Further plantings of the Block 6 clone took place in 1993, 1997, 1998 and 1999. These plantings have been an outstanding success consistently producing superb quality grapes for the winemaking team to turn into equally superb wine.
