Community Tasting Notes (average 91.2 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 102 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by bvin on 3/24/2024 & rated 91 points: This classic St Estephe is drinking nicely now although it improved during a couple of hours in the decanter. Probably will remain at this level for a few more years so no rush on this one. But if you do open it now you won’t regret it. (1877 views)
Tasted by pilot360 on 3/20/2024: The nose was burley, muscular, primary, smells like young wine. The palate is much lighter and lifted than expected, allowing me to think this just needs some more time. I’ll hold off for another few years on the remaining. (2025 views)
Tasted by Swaggering Beaunie on 3/3/2024: Delicious, chocolatey, ready without a decant. Drink now. (2256 views)
Tasted by Cosmo M. on 2/19/2024 & rated 91 points: Pretty similar to Nov 2022 although it came across maybe just a bit more astringent and tightly wound this time. It’s a heavy and muscular style of Bordeaux. Should still have several good years. (2563 views)
Tasted by Mali on 1/27/2024 & rated 92 points: Seit meiner ersten Verkostungsnotiz sind fast 4 Jahre vergangen. (2566 views)
Tasted by Jd6725 on 10/26/2023 & rated 91 points: I've had better bottles of this. Maybe slightly variable. No real complaints although this one was just a bit astringent and short on the mid palate. Less spices and backbone than other bottles. (3188 views)
Tasted by VinTypo on 9/26/2023: Nobueno (3259 views)
Tasted by Bobsmonkhouse on 9/3/2023 flawed bottle: Corked :( (3337 views)
Tasted by Labrador on 6/11/2023 & rated 89 points: No formal notes but very enjoyable (4121 views)
Tasted by Swaggering Beaunie on 6/11/2023: Tasted after a 2-hour decant, this was quite good. It featured a melange of black fruits, and perfectly balanced acids and tannins. Later on, the wine deepened, and the aftertaste was perfumy, with floral and patchouli flavors.

The QPR on this wine was excellent. It is ready to drink now, but can go for a number of years yet. (3763 views)
Tasted by Jay du Vin on 3/28/2023: Very disappointed. This was my second bottle of this wine and both were infected with Brett. Decanted for 3 hours based on prior reviews, but strong flavors and aromas of band-aid persisted. I couldn't finish a glass. (4470 views)
Tasted by g-man on 3/13/2023 & rated 92 points: This continues to amaze me how open, giving and balanced it is. It has not shut down and is very enjoyable even pnp. I'm 9 bottles into a case and only wish I had another case or two. A great value for the vintage. I doubt I'll have any left by maturity. (4257 views)
Tasted by Wine Diplomats on 2/9/2023 & rated 91 points: started off rather secondary note dominated with creamy, vanilla oak, spice notes on the nose that carry through to the medium bodied palate. However, after time the fruit comes back. Fresh, ripe, floral. Medium+ bodied. This 2016 doesn't taste like other 2016 Bordeaux I've had recently in that it's not in an awkward in-between or closed, dumb phase. At the same time, there could be more to come. The tannins are soft so it's good now for primary and secondary flavors or you can hold 7-10 years for tertiary notes. The style has changed some since the last time I had this label at around the same age as this one. I think it was the 2010 vintage when it was still called Capbern Gasqueton. It was more tannic and masculine while this is softer. Could just be the 2010 vintage though.

Tasted by @mdubyah on 1/28/2023 & rated 94 points: First bottle of a case. PNP. A bit of brett on the nose but not overpowering. Aromas of jasmine and dark flowers, spices. Quite light in the mouth. Hints of peach pit, cherry, graphite. Really interesting and wonderful wine, especially for the price. Looking forward to seeing it develop. (4144 views)
Tasted by Michael Mackenzie on 1/6/2023 & rated 91 points: Revisited a year on, although tasted in the interim.
On several occasions, a bretty nose upon opening. This bottle has lost it with aeration and is showing a muscularity not evident a year ago. Are the 2016s, so forward before, closing up?
Anyway an excellent wine. Just needs to settle. (4184 views)
Tasted by Piffpaff on 12/25/2022 & rated 92 points: I found out, that I like the earthy aromas of st.estephe, and this wine seems to be a good example of the style. It is rustic and earthy, not much fruit. Hidden somewhere. I don’t know how this develops over the years? We will see. (3691 views)
Tasted by Giller63 on 12/24/2022: Did 24 hour decant on one bottle and 4 hour decant on a second in the name of science. Served at 60 degrees. Second bottle had some leakage around the cork and tasted off, with a touch of Brett (band-aid). Dumped. Original bottle with the 24 hour decant was better but was not what I was expecting. Medium bodied, still very grippy tannins, and some tasters detected an undercurrent on Brett while others tasted some almond on the back end. Will let the others rest for a while longer. Admittedly my first experience with St. Estephe so maybe this sub-region is just not my bag. Will see how this evolves. (3356 views)
Tasted by Hugo Hilde on 11/27/2022 & rated 91 points: This is textbook St Estephe, very pronounced minerals, blackcurrant, leather.

Broad, still quite tannic, took a while to integrate fully, at the end of dinner it showed great balance between juicy black fruits, good freshness and a round medium+ bodied mouthfeel.

One to cellar further (3897 views)
Tasted by Cosmo M. on 11/19/2022 & rated 92 points: Solid left bank Bordeaux in good drinking window. Bold, but the fruit has matured and the wine has balance. Should have another 3-5 peak years. (3555 views)
Tasted by stamperb on 10/31/2022 & rated 94 points: Nose: Dark berries hidden behind a veil of musty, earthy, dirt; faint horse hair. Palate: Chalky blackberries, earth, wet wood; a little barnyard funk, which blew off over time), faint bitterness on the finish; fine-grained tannins. I really enjoyed this wine. (3885 views)
Tasted by Androurse on 10/17/2022 & rated 90 points: The wine looks purple colored. The legs are slow. There is moderate sediment in the bottle. It smells like blackberry, black currant (cassis), fig and black pepper. It tastes like blueberry, black currant (cassis), prune, oak, vanilla and cinnamon. The body is full. The wine has round texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has medium acidity. (4006 views)
Tasted by Jd6725 on 10/12/2022 & rated 92 points: Another solid outing from this wine. Barely moved since my previous bottle over a year ago. I'm curious to see where this wine goes as it's one of my biggest holdings. (3329 views)
Tasted by JackCali on 8/10/2022 & rated 91 points: Drinking well with moderate tannin and dark fruit (4436 views)
Tasted by racerchris on 5/26/2022: 8 months since my last bottle. Some bitter, brambly tannins stood out but otherwise this was quite enjoyable. (4975 views)
Tasted by Wine_Bear on 4/11/2022 & rated 93 points: Deep color; Big beautiful bouquet - classic cassis, berries, cherries, full of fruit. Shows the pedigree of the team from Calon Segur. (5006 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

St. Estèphe

Read more about St. Estephe and its wines Whereas the first activity recorded in Saint-Estèphe goes back as far as the Middle Bronze Age, the first vines date from the Roman Occupation. But it was the Bordeaux merchants who by aging and selling Saint-Estèphe wines themselves were largely responsible for this appellation's fame. And in the nineteenth century, noted for its prosperity, the great estates of today were created. The movement continues today with the merging of small estates.

A land of great wines, Saint-Estèphe is situated almost in the centre of the Médoc, close to the Gironde Estuary. The appellation is equidistant from Bordeaux and the Pointe de Grave.
The beds of soil are characterized by their remarkable diversity, the result of their undulating relief and excellent drainage. Quartz and well-rounded pebbles mingled with light, sandy surface soil are found everywhere, giving the wines a distinctive finesse. And the subsoil is made up of the famous Saint-Estèphe limestone, which outcrops on the west of the commune.

Tasting
Thanks to ideal conditions of climate and geology, Saint-Estèphe wines are characterized by their sturdy qualities and robust constitution. Accordingly, they can be laid down for a very long time while yet preserving their youth and freshness. Distinguished by a subsoil which is more clayey than that in the other communal appellations which lie by the river, the wine here attains a distinctive individuality : a very rich tannic structure, a fine deep red colour and an exceptional backbone with aromas of great finesse.

Production conditions (Decree dated September 11, 1936):

In order to have the right to the Saint-Estèphe appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the communes of Saint-Estèphe, "excluding any parcels in that area which are situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
