Tasted by steinersing on 2/13/2024 & rated 94 points: With food a real treat (534 views)
Tasted by steinersing on 9/14/2023 & rated 93 points: Some tar, leather, hints of oxidative evolution initially. But integrated swiftly into an overall nice taste experience. Good acidity core. Vintage quality shows here. (774 views)
Tasted by mjdixon on 2/20/2021 & rated 92 points: Past it's peak drinking IMHO.
Had some of the previous magnum but thinner and less pronounced.
Herb element almost disappeared now. (2107 views)
Tasted by BradE on 7/19/2020: A solid Barolo, with lots of sweet cherry. (2600 views)
Tasted by Jdwinedrinker on 12/25/2019: Heat damaged I think. Smoky oak. (2491 views)
Tasted by winesnout on 10/16/2017 & rated 93 points: A terrific effort from the late Aldo Conterno - still in great shape 27 years after the vintage. Somewhere between a modern and a traditional / old-school style it shows great complexity and elegance. Beautiful, ripe berry notes, followed by layers of secondary notes that include tar, leather, coffee and tea leaves. Looooong finish. Outstanding, however, his 1990 Vigna Colonello is even a bit more charming and a touch smoother than this one. (4115 views)
Tasted by mjdixon on 9/7/2017 & rated 96 points: Decanted for three hours from Magnum
Tasted excellent on opening but developed into a spectacular Barolo
Plenty of depth but not heavy. Tannins mainly gone but fruit evident in abundant layers
Touch of sweetness adds to the theill of this silky sexy wine
Fantastic!! (4038 views)
Tasted by steinersing on 2/25/2017 & rated 93 points: Double decanted 3 hours ahead. Lots of sediment. Quite evolved nose, tar, great depth. Meaty wine. (3921 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 12/6/2016 & rated 90 points: Needed to be opened earlier. Quite savory, which was shock following Burgs. Lot of fruit with licorice notes. Big, long. (3725 views)
Tasted by pjaines on 11/29/2016: A great Barolo with fully mature palate but still a vigorous streak of acidity that helps this wine cut through any rich food. (3075 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 11/18/2016 & rated 92 points: Neb-fest: Nebbiolo & Truffle Dinner (Chicago, IL): A quick double decant in the morning and tasted later that night. In a beautiful spot with mature dried red cherry and distinct tar notes. Good depth and concentration on the palate. Solidly in its mature drinking window. (2735 views)
Tasted by Dennis Graves on 3/17/2016 & rated 94 points: Stored at 55 degrees, humidity controlled, since purchase 23 years ago.

Good color. Classic mature, old style Barolo nose and palate. After opened for half an hour, was really quite extraordinary. A masculine nose and palate with intense mature fruit, complexity and typical mature Barolo tannins. Excellent wine that is among the best of the many mature barolos I have had from top producers of the outstanding 89 and 90 vintages. Fully mature and not likely to improve, but from my cool cellar is still drinking very well. (2783 views)
Tasted by brh_wine on 12/25/2015 & rated 89 points: This was a good match for well prepared porchetta. Was showing it's maturity, not over peak but not likely to get much better. Since this was my first experience with the wine I have no context on how well it is aging. (2314 views)
Tasted by steinersing on 3/9/2015 & rated 93 points: Great typicity. Tar and pot purri, some dried roses but also a hint of rotten vegetable in a positive, interesting sense. Good sweetness in the middle and also solid acidity structure. Food wine with a lot of life ahead. (2949 views)
Tasted by rnellans on 9/1/2013 & rated 94 points: Tasted alongside the 90 Colonnello. This didn't have quite the depth of the latter, but such a beautiful intense nose of tar, rose petals, leather...wow. Medium structured with great balance. Long and delish. (4602 views)
Tasted by kenv on 4/27/2013 & rated 93 points: Gala Dinner at Antonio Galloni's La Festa del Barolo (Del Posto Restaurant, NYC): From magnum. Henry K. Elegant, rich, young. Beautiful. (5853 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 11/5/2012 & rated 90 points: Kelly and Kevin’s excellent adventure before WWS 2012; 11/4/2012-11/11/2012 (La Morra): We ordered thinking that this is the regular Cicala bottling. Still opaque, dark baked fruits, fig, earth, licorice, raisin and tar. Big scale, very ripe clearly reflecting the vintage, earth and a hint of flower at the end. Not a bad wine but too ripe for me. (5944 views)
Tasted by plitton on 11/4/2012 & rated 88 points: Good but bricking. (4289 views)
Tasted by BradE on 1/27/2012: An above average bottle. Needed a bit of time. Not a gee-whiz wine, but downright pleasing from beginning to end. (4393 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 12/21/2011 & rated 90 points: Bricking garnet. Ripe red fruit and anis on the nose. Round, silky and fine. Lacks a memorable finish. (90) (3336 views)
Tasted by MC on 7/21/2011: A few years later still similar to the last note. Not sure this will ever get better, but some chance as it mellows with age. I just worry the fruit is not there and it shows some hot vintage flaws. B+/A- (3213 views)
Tasted by dream on 6/12/2011 & rated 93 points: Drank this out in the woods with roasted game bird and it really showed well. Very faded color with a lovely nose of mushrooms, truffles, dark cherries and forest floor (or was that the actual forest floor I smelled?). Still excellent intensity of sweet dark cherry fruit with complex flavors of tree bark and mushrooms. Finishes with developed but dry tannins that are smoky and smooth. Has the slight VA style of some of the older, less clean Barolos but this wine gets away with it tonight with the quality of the fruit and the amazing secondary flavor development. (2938 views)
Tasted by JohnFalstaff on 5/28/2011 & rated 94 points: Nose: vivid presence of cork reaction. Leather, licorice, brick, a lot of wood. Taste: again, a lot of cork, tar, licorice, rose petals. A lot of effort has to be done to unearth true style of this obviously extraordinary wine from the corkage trouble. (2990 views)
Tasted by kenv on 10/9/2010 & rated 92 points: 1990 Barolo: Modern vs. Traditional (private home): Lovely nose of tar and licorice. Sour cherry in the mouth. Nice. (5415 views)
Tasted by LWI on 8/21/2010 & rated 93 points: Initially I did find it rather evolved on the nose, even with some bullion (which disappeared somewhat – but not entirely - after some hours), spices and leather; long and intense, good acidity, tight and with some underbrush notes, even flowers after a while. Becomes a bit sweeter after some time in the glass. (3213 views)

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Barolo

Regional History:
The wines of Piedmont are noted as far back as Pliny's Natural History. Due to geographic and political isolation, Piedmont was without a natural port for most of its history, which made exportation treacherous and expensive. This left the Piedmontese with little incentive to expand production. Sixteenth-century records show a mere 14% of the Bassa Langa under vine -- most of that low-lying and farmed polyculturally. In the nineteenth century the Marchesa Falletti, a frenchwoman by birth, brought eonologist Louis Oudart from Champagne to create the first dry wines in Piemonte. Along with work in experimental vineyards at Castello Grinzane conducted by Camilo Cavour -- later Conte di Cavour, leader of the Risorgimento and first Prime Minister of Italy -- this was the birth of modern wine in the Piedmont. At the heart of the region and her reputation are Alba and the Langhe Hills. This series of weathered outcroppings south of the Tanaro River is of maritime origin and composed mainly of limestone, sand and clay, known as terra bianca. In these soils -located mainly around the towns of Barolo and Barbaresco -- the ancient allobrogica, now Nebbiolo, achieves its renowned fineness and power.
