Tasted by llink on 12/16/2023 & rated 93 points: Decanted for a few hours. Sous bois macerated cherry and a metallic component on the nose. Saline infused texture, red cherry, strawberry with good acidity and medium length. In a great spot tonight. (772 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 12/8/2023 & rated 95 points: CRiBBS @ La T (La Trompette, London): Meaty, feral, sweet, sous-bois, decayed loveliness. I love Ponsot from this era. Drinking beautifully but life ahead given the sense of grip on the finish. ***** (926 views)
Tasted by SCSNJ on 11/11/2023: On w bottle is actually here in random rack Category (760 views)
Tasted by sdchevs on 6/25/2023: Drank at inventory/labeling at Chateau 55; was just OK (705 views)
Tasted by sdwineguru on 5/28/2023 & rated 91 points: 2002 Domaine Ponsot Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes. Light ruby, fading ruby rim; red and black fruit, gamey, light oak nose; low-mid acids; softening tannins; a little out of kilter; semi-long one-dimensional finish. Bad phase? 16.5 UC Davis scale, 91 other scales. (1288 views)
Tasted by glou.sf on 3/11/2023 & rated 95 points: Lovely nose with red fruit, earth, forest floor, and chocolate. Good balance on the palate with strawberry, cherry, and underwood flavors. Long finish. There is lots going on in this wine and the flavors and complex and deep. It can probably go much longer, but it’s drinking beautifully right now. Gorgeous wine! (1327 views)
Tasted by Bargung on 2/18/2023 & rated 85 points: Säure dominiert, von Frucht keine Spur, kein Grand Cru Niveau. (1141 views)
Tasted by Kim Gerner on 1/13/2023 flawed bottle: Bourgogne 2002 horisontal Grand and 1. cru winetasting dinner (20 btls) (Nordsjaelland): Garnet color. Very rustic and tertiary farmyard notes develops further in the glass. Also notes of liquorice. High acidity and medium+ finish. Unfortunately a little corked. (326 views)
Tasted by Bullethead on 9/20/2022 & rated 91 points: Agreed with Burgnick’s comment that Ponsot at this era can be inconsistent. This performed much worse than the clos st denis from the same vintage I had 2 years ago which had bright fruit and lovely.

The bottle is an ex-domaine bottle released in 2021, the nose is a bit dirty, muddy and has not much fruits. I am not sure if this will improve. The palate is better with good complexity and generous but still far behind from my expectation. (1765 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 5/18/2021 & rated 92 points: Broad, powerful and deep CLDR with earth, iron, blood, plums and dark fruit. Good clarity on the palate especially for Ponsot during this era which can be a bit dirty and inconsistent. (4073 views)
 Tasted by llink on 1/26/2021 & rated 92 points: Ponsot Vertical 02, 05, 10: Wine 5, 2002 (my #3, groups #1)
Young for a 2002, shows clean, bright red/blue fruit, a touch plummy then a little spicy with a dose of VA on the nose. Good energy, with a glossy cherry texture but perhaps a bit lean in comparison to the others. There is a consistent "sorbet-like" element to all the wines, very pure and intense without being jammy or cloying. (3672 views)
Tasted by BenBlu on 9/16/2020 & rated 93 points: Deep nose of beef blood, iodine. Later some nail polish with good acidic lift. On the palate it started out fantastic but got a bit weird. Hmm, would need to revisit with more time. There was too much going on that night. Between 92-94 (so 93 for now). Interestingly bested for me by Arlaud 02 Clos Roche which most people preferred as well. (4137 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 6/12/2020 & rated 91 points: Candied, flowers, strawberry and spice. Fruit forward on the palate but elegant especially for a Ponsot. Straightforward without the grand cru complexity. Good drink but underwhelming if you compare to dujac and hubert lignier cdlr 2002. Drinking very well now. (4145 views)
Tasted by MC on 3/29/2020: Decanted 3 hours. Best part of this was uncorking and the soaring ripe red fruit from the glass. But hours later this was tart, muted and never really showed much at all. Not sure - possible an off bottle but not high on this one right now and would not bet on the future based on this bottle. B/B+ (3851 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 3/6/2020 & rated 93 points: Showing better, good clarity, juicy yet lifted. 93 (2617 views)
Tasted by RayOB on 1/24/2020 & rated 95 points: Drank at 67
Incredible complex nose but still fresh. Superb palate with great depth. Lovely (2398 views)
Tasted by Elpaninaro on 12/12/2019: pale pink-red color, a bit of age on the rim, a delicate and aged nose, on the palate light bodied, deft and edgy structure, sweet aged fruit, cherries, hints of strawberry, light brush tones, very pretty, for anyone expecting this to behave like your average massive 2002- the disappointment will be great, but that said it is balanced, aged, attractive and even a bit savory if not particularly persistent or complex, in other words- this is well below what is to be expected but is still a very attractive wine.

***, ready to go and drink soon (2597 views)
Tasted by AValdes on 12/12/2019 & rated 93 points: Consistent from prior tasting. Just in such a great place right now. I believe it has at least another 5-10 years but it’s great right now. (2075 views)
Tasted by BradE on 11/9/2019: Ponsot Clos de la Roche: Strong tannins, more structured than the 02 Dujac served along side. A good bottle, and terrific with food. (2268 views)
Tasted by SLab on 11/9/2019 & rated 89 points: Une autre déception pour moi. Oui, bcp de complexité mais le tout n'est pas harmonieux. Acidité agaçante. Difficile de comprendre les prix ! 88-89pts (1825 views)
Tasted by Robert Pavlovich on 6/29/2019: Killer pinosity on the nose, expressive strawberry/raspberry fruit, with good spice and tobacco leaf accents. Sweet fruit on the palate with good acidic support underneath, understated spice. Shows firm tannins on a medium intense, but long and resonant finish, with cleansing acidity following through. Very well done, and a treat to taste. Figures to be entering its peak plateau, no rush. (2373 views)
Tasted by M.S.L. on 3/28/2019 & rated 91 points: Bourgogne 2002 tasting. Many top wines from some of the best producers, Rousseau, Roumier, DRC, Leroy etc; 3/28/2019-4/28/2019 (Restaurant Palægade, Copenhagen): Some at the table felt this was slightly faulty due to much acidity. I unfortunately can not say if it is the wines expression or if it was slightly faulty. To me it was tight, but not out of balance. Not a style of wine i like too much or maybe I just didn't taste an up to par bottle. (3002 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 2/3/2019 & rated 92 points: Sommelier Appreciation Dinner 2019 (The Brown Residence): Expressive nose displaying very ripe red fruit, cherry brandy, cherry jam, licorice, dark spices and earth. Excellent concentration, deeply tone dense ripe red fruit, thick and jammy, medium acidity and mineral, and a medium to long jammy red fruit driven finish. This clearly expresses the vintage and producer which may not necessarily be a good thing. For my palate, it still needs another decade to shed the ripe fruit expression. (3361 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 2/1/2019: Acker 2019/02 (Vaucluse): I suppose I have confirmed I am not quite a fan of new Ponsot. (2634 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 1/11/2019 & rated 94 points: JM Paulee. Magnum. Very pure. Blue fruit, structure. (2622 views)

Rockss and Fruit (6/1/2007)
(Ponsot Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes) This just was sensational albeit very very young. The nose was intense rasberry coulis mixed with spice dust, cinnamon and wet earth. The palate was velvety, seamless and concentrated with lots of power and richness which it wore gracefully. Lovely finish and lively fruit backed up by BIG acidity. This was essentially closed but still had enough there to be immensely pleasurable. Profound bottle of wine and one that will last easily 40-50 years in the cellar.

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
