| Community Tasting Notes (average 91.4 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 70 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by spendergast on 4/24/2023 & rated 94 points: An excellent Cab with dark fruit, forest floor, hint of spice, all nicely balanced with long finish. Tannins are well integrated. (605 views) | | Tasted by Mike Dildine on 11/8/2022 & rated 96 points: 13.5% abv. Dark ruby, very aromatic. A fully evolved claret, drinking beautifully. Red cherry, cassis, mint, a touch of tobacco and saddle leather. Excellent body, length and depth. Suave. Will probably hold for several more years, but why wait? (914 views) | | Tasted by bvivio on 10/15/2020 & rated 96 points: (no formal tasting notes)
Decanted for two hours and drank with a grilled ribeye. Beautifully perfumed with black currant, tobacco, spice box, herbs, earth, and some subtle red bell pepper jam. Great fruit concentration but also rather savory, as a Santa Cruz cab should be. Full bodied, with silky tannins, refreshing acidity, seamless alcohol (13.5%), and a long finish. A very special bottle of wine that is drinking wonderfully right now in its middle age! (1964 views) | | Tasted by RonniePiemonte on 5/17/2020 & rated 95 points: Mountain Bordeaux Blend. 82% Cab, 16% Merlot, 2% PV. Delicious fruit and minerals. Hint of Tobacco and graphite on the end. Vibrant. High Toned. In a great place right now. (2044 views) | | Tasted by sortcode on 4/30/2020 & rated 94 points: 30.4.2020:++ zu Beginn leichter Säureüberhang, Sauerkirsche, etwas zurückhaltend, dann feines Holz, leicht blumig, etwas Leder, leicht rauchig, sehr schön, jetzt im Peak!
20.12.2018:++ Kräuter, Lakritz, Minze, tolle Säure, blumig, toller CabS, leichter Rauch, nach 1h dekantieren perfekt, jetzt +3Jahre
Eden Kauf 04/2014: Super Nase, sehr typisch, toller Spasswein, gute Struktur, lagerfähig, kaufen! (2042 views) | | Tasted by Mike Dildine on 4/11/2020 & rated 95 points: 13.3% abv. Dark ruby, expressive aromatics. On the palate, cassis, ripe plum, mint and graphite. Tannins mostly resolved, very suave, deep and long. This wine is still vibrant, probably not yet at its peak. A genuine pleasure to drink. (1873 views) | | Tasted by jdp2109 on 10/6/2019 & rated 90 points: I let it breath in the bottle for 2 hours prior to opening. Well balanced with good fruit. Not much complexity. Little tannins remaining. Would drink up. (1797 views) | | Tasted by EricDilda on 8/23/2019 & rated 93 points: Left bank old world style. Soft. Balanced alcohol. (1297 views) | | Tasted by jnewman77 on 3/5/2019: This was solid, but still young. The nose has an initial note of vanilla and oak, followed by dark fruits, bell pepper, dill, herbs, and spice box. The palate is nicely balanced with good fruit, nice acidity, and well integrated structure. Overall I think this is not bad, but it needs to integrate the oak a bit better for me. Likely will in time, maybe another 5-10 years.
Better on night 2 with the nose a bit more integrated, palate still balanced and the juicy acidity keeps this energetic. For my palate this is peaking in a decade. (1380 views) | | Tasted by Mike Dildine on 7/27/2018 & rated 94 points: Outstandingly balance and intensity. (2094 views) | | Tasted by Frank Murray III on 7/23/2018: Smells like Cab! Black cherry and a plush ripeness in the palate. Some light cedar. Enjoyed this, as it is just modern enough to have a CA flair but also restrained enough to appeal to my older school profile. (2398 views) | | Tasted by carstenf on 12/25/2017 & rated 92 points: Cigarbox and leather with licorice , mature fruit. (1953 views) | | Tasted by thefatheroftheyear on 9/2/2017: Dynamite bottle. Raspberry, strawberry, dirt and rocky soil are prevalent. Very dense and about a year from peak. Decanted for an hour. (2240 views) | | Tasted by Ron Felthoven on 7/5/2017: A really exceptional and seamless bottle of wine. Fair amount of complexity, very lovely. Drink now or in another 5-10 years. (2639 views) | | Tasted by Snowryeder on 6/25/2017 & rated 93 points: Drinking very well. Blackberries & chocolate. Starting to show its age in the color but will last a few more years. (1941 views) | | Tasted by Mike Dildine on 12/31/2016 & rated 93 points: 13.5% abv. Dark ruby, rich aromatics. On the palate, cassis, leather, cocoa, coffee. Deep and long with good tannic structure. Still a baby, should improve for many years. (2511 views) | | Tasted by jhieb on 8/26/2016 & rated 89 points: Solid fruit, but, the oak overpowers any nuance that might have been there. (2026 views) | | Tasted by RonniePiemonte on 1/30/2016 & rated 91 points: Firecracker nose tipping off what is to come. Fresh entrance. Camphor, graphite, tobacco and a fade away cinnamon finish. Beautifully balanced. This is enjoyable and approachable. Forbearance will allow for integration and offer a great reward. Anticipate having fun watching this evolve. (2380 views) | | Tasted by KAP on 12/23/2015 & rated 90 points: Tart and complex. (2415 views) | | Tasted by Life At Your Leisure 🍷 on 11/29/2015 & rated 92 points: Dark ruby color turning crimson at the rim with a transparent edge. The nose shows herbaceous, smoky notes of dried currant, meat, and potpourri. The palate is dry, full-bodied, and well-structured with a fleshy texture. Flavors of dried red and dark cherry, tobacco, graphite, scorched earth and new leather are coated with a thin layer of menthol that streaks through the long, mineral-filled finish. Drink now until 2028. 92+ (2466 views) | | Tasted by KendraPM on 11/26/2015 & rated 93 points: Must, forest floor, older aroma that was quickly overlooked because the body of this wine was amazing. Full-bodied with a long, full finish. Flavors of blackberry jam, light mushrooms and espresso. We enjoyed paired with peppercorn steak and a cheese and chocolate board. (2015 views) | | Tasted by KAP on 7/31/2015 & rated 92 points: Super wine. Great California cab. (2115 views) | | Tasted by winejnky on 6/26/2015 & rated 90 points: A structured offering showing oak, graphite and earth up front with some black cherry and currants on the finish. A CA offering that really bends toward Bordeaux profile but clearly with a bit more CA pop and fruitiness. (1672 views) | | Tasted by up4wine on 3/12/2015 & rated 90 points: Used in my monthly wine tasting series. This has the classic Santa Cruz grassiness, some say barnyard, on top of bright sweet fruit. Some cherish this style of Cab, other shun it. Many of the tasters were in the later category, but 2 picked this wine as their 1st place wine against very strong contenders, 2007 Round Pond and 2007 Joseph Phelps. I found it quite enjoyable; thinking it would really go great with a grilled steak topped with Gorgonzola crumble. (1990 views) | | Tasted by wineduggery on 3/5/2015 & rated 92 points: Great flavor and acidity. Our go to cab, especially with food. | Mount Eden Vineyards Producer websiteCabernet SauvignonCabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.
Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet SauvignonUSAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Santa Cruz Mountains Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association | Wikipedia
Once referred to by wine writers as the Chaine d'Or -- or "golden chain" -- the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA sits above Silicon Valley, running along the craggy range next to the Pacific on some of the prettiest parts of Northern California. The area supports more than 75 wineries, despite being limited by geography and high land prices.
In 1981 the Santa Cruz Mountains Viticultural Appellation became federally recognized, one of the first American viticultural areas to be defined by geophysical and climatic factors. The appellation encompasses the Santa Cruz Mountain range, from Half Moon Bay in the north, to Mount Madonna in the south. The east and west boundaries are defined by elevation, extending down to 800 feet in the east and 400 feet in the west. |
