Tasted by tannictongue on 5/13/2023: Finish up. On down slope. (243 views)
Tasted by cobbpa on 8/8/2020 & rated 90 points: Nice. Probably on the latter end of the drinking curve. A touch of earthy spice shows itself beneath the fruit moreso than past bottles, but it's still a new world take on Syrah (and delicious). (978 views)
Tasted by Swaggering Beaunie on 5/18/2018: Our previous bottle of this, tasted two years ago, was much too young to open. This bottle, tasted after a 3 hour decant, was delicious, and apparently just entering its drinking window. It presented generous mixed black fruits and acidity, along with the expected beef blood and olive brine. It was an outstanding bargain at $22 from Last Bottle; I should have bought many more. Drink 2018-2025. (2245 views)
Tasted by mvande21 on 3/9/2018 & rated 92 points: This is developing nicely. Much smoother than bottle sampled seven months ago. Short decant. Dark, opaque color. Fresh black fruit nose and palate. Deep Syrah character (pepper, spice). Full body, integrated tannins with medium length finish. (2199 views)
Tasted by Not647f on 4/16/2017: With persian spiced lamb shanks. Chilled it a little extra before opening. This is completely hitting its stride, with nice savory notes of olive, meat--lots of beefy, bloody, smoky meat--and blackberries and something else. It's filled out, less St. Jo than C-R. I have one more left, and while there's no rush, I'm not going to wait forever as I don't see how this can get a whole lot better. Time to reload when I can find some of the more recent vintages. (2943 views)
Tasted by yaCellar on 12/31/2016 & rated 91 points: 1.5 hour decant. Drank over 2 hours. Suboptimal glassware.

Aromas of smoked meat and very dark fruit, subtle green pepper, black pepper. Has that distinctive herbal/menthol nose of Sonoma Syrah, though less pronounced than other producers.

Light acid and tannins with much more menthol on the palette. Paired well with roast duck. (2924 views)
Tasted by Swaggering Beaunie on 5/21/2016 & rated 93 points: Tasted after a 2-hour decant.

Thin, hollow midpalate. I am surprised by the positive reviews here. Not much to it. 86 points.

Edit, 4 days later: Well, I need to revise my review of this wine. We left about 3 ounces of wine in the bottle and recorked it, and put it in the fridge. I decided to try the remainder out of curiosity, expecting it to be expired, but it is superb! It tastes and smells like a fine, well-aged Ribera del Duero. 93 points now!

The lesson here, is that serious reds need long aging,or a very long decant. (3503 views)
Tasted by ikkaariainen on 4/30/2016 & rated 90 points: Really enjoyed this Sonoma Valley syrah from an under-rated producer at a recent wine dinner with good wine friends - kindly brought by good vino friend and fellow CT'er Bill Woratchek. A good QPR wine at this price point. Given a short decant and this wine could definitely stand at least a 60-90 minute decant. Sweet intense dark nose, medium bodied, good mouth feel, decent aftertaste, well balanced, softening and silky but still very present tannins and I anticipate at least another 3-5 years if cellared appropriately. This paired excellently with duck & lamb. Primary flavors included dark fruit and blackberry up front with more earthy flavors of mushrooms, game and smoke on the mid- and late palate. Definitely recommend this wine. (2987 views)
Tasted by dfarley on 3/28/2016 flawed bottle: Flawed bottle. Smelled like rotten meat. Attempt to aerate made it completely dead on the palette. (3017 views)
Tasted by SLOFred on 2/14/2016 & rated 90 points: Very nice Syrah. Varietal. Will buy again. (2555 views)
Tasted by SLOFred on 1/25/2016 & rated 88 points: A full 3 hour decant. Better than the last bottle, but still rather thin. Definite Syrah flavors, with tar. Slight bitterness in the aftertaste. Okay for $24. (2588 views)
Tasted by cobystilp on 12/28/2015 & rated 90 points: This wine starts with a lot of burnt underbrush up front but yields to the sweet, dark red fruits with some air. Give it 30 minutes to decant. I'm not the biggest Syrah fan so take my note and score with a grain of salt. (2046 views)
Tasted by Not647f on 12/24/2015: This is really coming along, but I will try not to rush the last two. Meat, blackberry, the olives are fading perhaps as tannins resolve. This is clean and crisp, but serious and dark. Midweight, which was right with the lamb chops. Tannins are silky, acids are present but mellowed. Finish is pretty long. (1981 views)
 Tasted by mr21cbs on 12/20/2015 & rated 90 points: Tasty! (1999 views)
Tasted by pifcho on 11/14/2015 & rated 91 points: On the first night this was leaning towards being a fruit bomb, despite its low alc and good balance. On the 2nd night this is much more in balance with still distinctly Cali fruit, but with great underlying salinity which balances the fruit and gives complexity. Like the upside here 91+. I'd hold it for 3-5 years. (1853 views)
Tasted by SLOFred on 10/23/2015 & rated 88 points: Ditto my prior comments. Not a great QPR. I expected more. Rather thin, did improve with 2-3 hour decant, but still not fabulous. (1716 views)
Tasted by garetjax_kison on 10/15/2015 & rated 89 points: Popped and poured making dinner. Good weight with dark fruit and notes of leather/meat. Tannins are in balance. Will likely improve with age (unopened) and exposure to O2 (tonight's bottle). However, bottle may not survive the night the next hour. It has been a rough week. (1686 views)
Tasted by jmoulder on 7/27/2015 & rated 89 points: Full bodied heavy wine. Very complex mineral characteristics supported by good fruit. The tannins are a bit heavy with this wine, but i think that will sort out in a few years. I think this wine is very young at this time, and will be much improved with a few years in the cellar. (2451 views)
Tasted by hosscrow on 6/22/2015 & rated 91 points: A beautiful Sonoma Syrah (reminds me of Limerick Lane) with an enticing spicy aroma on the second day and a purple/red color out to the rim. Will last for another 3-4 years. A complex powerful nose of bright dark red fruit, cherries and blackberries. Soft, full mouthfeel, well integrated tannins, a tart acidity, powerful, notes of dark fruit and, at the moment, only a hint of meat and smoke. An extended, balanced finish with a touch of bitterness at the very end. Patience in the cellar will pay off. (2328 views)
Tasted by SLOFred on 6/5/2015 & rated 88 points: okay wine. When first opened, pretty thin. It got better after the 3 hour decant. Not a stunning wine, but not bad for $25. Based on CT, which I find more critical than main line reviewers, I expected more. The body definitely developed after the decant. I am not sure aging will improve this wine, but I have 3 more bottles. We will see. (2173 views)
Tasted by Not647f on 6/2/2015: Delicious but young and undeveloped. Lots of tannins, mostly they are integrated. The acids are a little rough still. But this bodes well, because the fruit and smoky meat are not going to fade very fast. There's plenty to like in the aromas of meat, berries and violets. This is progressing, but slowly. As far as hitting its stride, I'd put the drinking window at 2017+. Need patience, but the payoff will probably be large. (2173 views)
Tasted by conga523 on 5/8/2015 & rated 90 points: Was expecting more from this one based on the scores. I think the lower alcohol on this one leads to the lack of depth that I was expecting. Ok for a mid week wine at a discounted price. (2232 views)
Tasted by GrapesRGreat on 5/7/2015 & rated 92 points: I liked this quite a bit, and thought it more in line with the N. Rhone than the other Cali Syrahs in the flight, the crowd at this tasting didn't see it the same way. They saw it as obviously Californian with about a 50/50 split like/dislike. I got leather and pepper with dark fruits backing it up. Not too heavy. (1845 views)
Tasted by cobystilp on 5/5/2015 & rated 91 points: Fab QPR. I opened this and drank over two nights. It didn't really seem to change a lot. Great CA syrah. This was my first taste of this producer and vineyard but both were great. Esp for $25 price point. Loads of blackberry and blackcurrant. Jammy with just a bit of spice. I'm a PN drinker and this really appealed to me. Seemed very youthful. (1645 views)
Tasted by vinophobic on 5/3/2015 & rated 92 points: Fantastic big nose of ripe blackberries and just a hint of pepper and smoke. Palate isn't quite up to the high performing nose but lovely nonetheless. There was almost a cab-like fruit forwardness on opening but balanced out nicely after a couple hours of decanting. The drinking window through 2017 seems to significantly underestimate the life of this wine. One of the top Syrahs I've had in the last year. (1783 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Cardiac Hill

Cardiac Hill vineyard runs on a very steep hillside at an elevation ranging from 500 to 900 feet hence the peculiar but appropriate name. It is situated in the southeast corner of the Bennett Valley, where three mountain peaks at the northern end of the Petaluma Wind Gap create a unique Sonoma County micro-climate. The Valley's benchland soils formed from the volcanic ash of Taylor Mountain, Sonoma Mountain and Bennett Ridge, combined with the unusually cool climate, create one of Sonoma County's most expressive Syrah growing regions.

This North-facing vineyard is 9.5 acres planted to four different clones of Syrah: Estrella River, 383,470 and 174. Spacing is 4x6 with a VSP trellising system and all vines are caned pruned. Crop thinning starts at one cluster per shoot before veraison and adjustments are made to crop load after veraison. Average tons per acre is 1.5-2.5 tons.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
