| Community Tasting Notes (average 89 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 36 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by klezman on 1/10/2024: In a great place. Berries, spices, Zinfandel goodness. (356 views) | | Tasted by rjquillin on 5/7/2023: showing some nice age. Too many in the cellar, need to step it up. (335 views) | | Tasted by merryberry on 1/20/2023 & rated 89 points: No bricking, but a definite aged aroma, in a good way. Good red fruit, spices, fully integrated tannins, nutmeg powder, and a medium plus finish. Don't believe the "drink by" date on this one. (287 views) | | Tasted by rjquillin on 10/23/2022: Back in '17 I thought I had only one; found more and they are doing just fine. No hurry at this time. (432 views) | | Tasted by JustBS on 9/24/2022 & rated 87 points: May be on the decline (377 views) | | Tasted by radiolysis on 6/6/2022: A fine bottle. No bricking or even sediment. It's not vibrantly fruity, but more a nicely stewed plum. A little Zinfandel 'spice'. (438 views) | | Tasted by klezman on 3/10/2022: Good over two nights, as always. Starting to lose its primary fruit and move into more secondary notes. Probably a touch better on night 1 than 2. (1177 views) | | Tasted by HWgeek on 5/28/2021 & rated 91 points: Spice and some pepper on the palate, bit on the acidic side, while still being full bodied. Berry flavors in the background, finishes with moderate yet balanced tannins, gives that mouthful without coming up short. Had to let it breath to get the depth out of it. (518 views) | | Tasted by klezman on 9/16/2020: Delicious - and the most Turley-esque of my Wellington bottles so far. Interesting. Deep fruit aromas and flavours but with some interesting spices to round it out. (1831 views) | | Tasted by nfurlong on 8/9/2020 & rated 91 points: deep garnet hue; subtle cedar notes on a black fruit background in the nose; nice luscious blackberry, black raspberry and black cherry flavors very nicely integrated with acid backbone. Secondary flavors include crushed strawberry, cassis and hints of cinnamon. Gaining subtlety in its middle age. (783 views) | | Tasted by YuriyG on 4/28/2020 & rated 92 points: Juicy, and singing all the right notes. This one is in its prime. (711 views) | | Tasted by merryberry on 3/20/2020 & rated 91 points: Nearly black with ruby highlights. Old cedar chest, nutmeg, and crushed strawberry nose. Full bodied, baked cherry pie, toast, dried cranberries, fully integrated tannins, pepper, and a long spicy finish. What a treat. (556 views) | | Tasted by klezman on 7/31/2019: This was in a nice place again. (1699 views) | | Tasted by klezman on 7/30/2018: Tasty - fruity, a bit of earth, some Zin-spice, and a nice finish. (2089 views) | | Tasted by radiolysis on 6/25/2018: Over two days i didn't notice a whole lot of change -- certainly not as much as other tasting notes indicated.
PnP was dry but fruity. Very fruity and bold which would have been nice in and of itself. On the second day it seemed to calm down a bit. Less bold, but a little more alcohol came through.
Neither day was better or worse for me, just a really good tasting bottle. (1073 views) | | Tasted by YuriyG on 6/3/2018 & rated 91 points: All around enjoyable... nice with meat but versatile enough to let the red fruit notes sing with veggies too. (965 views) | | Tasted by klezman on 5/16/2018: Big and burly on day 1, but with more complexity appearing than even 6 months ago. Day 2 it seems to need some air to smooth out. (1953 views) | | Tasted by mnakamr1 on 4/30/2018 & rated 80 points: Still a little sharp for my taste, but more enjoyable than I remembered earlier bottles being. Perhaps coming into its own now. (900 views) | | Tasted by steve_and_mary on 3/27/2018 & rated 89 points: Liked this bottle better than the last. Strawberry was predominant for me. Very good, though. (729 views) | | Tasted by klezman on 2/9/2018: Don't recall if I managed to have any of this bottle either. (1680 views) | | Tasted by klezman on 12/13/2017: The last notes hold true. A young and vibrant Zin. (2184 views) | | Tasted by steve_and_mary on 12/9/2017 & rated 84 points: Maybe still a little young, or 2013 just not as jammy as older vintages. (1055 views) | | Tasted by klezman on 5/15/2017: Initially very fruity, almost overwhelmingly jammy. But as with Peter's wines, this came into more balance with a bit of air as the earth and spices came out a bit. Even just 25 minutes later this is already coming to a much nicer state for my tastes. With that little bit of breathing this is what a young Zin can be - dense, fruity, medium bodied, a bit earthy and leathery. (2198 views) | | Tasted by rjquillin on 3/21/2017: Yikes, do I really have only one more..! (1577 views) | | Only displaying the 25 most recent notes - click to see all notes for this wine... |
| Zinfandel ZAP: Zinfandel Advocates & Producers | Varietal character (Appellation America) | Wikipedia-ZinfandelMeeks Hilltop RanchMeeks Hilltop Ranch is on the site of a pre-prohibition vineyard and winery. George Meeks still has the old Bonded Winery #85 placard above the cellar door. The vineyard is planted in four separate blocks, each with a different exposure: "Frontyard" faces East, "Over the Hill" faces Southwest, "Meadow" faces Northwest and "Hilltop" is a rolling plateau facing "up". USAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Sonoma CountyMendocino CountySonoma ValleySonoma County, California, is one of the most important winegrowing regions in the whole of the United States. Vines have been planted here since the 1850s and, apart from the inevitable hiatus brought about by Prohibition, the county's relationship with wine has been prolific and unbroken.
Viticulturally speaking, Sonoma County is divided into three distinct sections: Sonoma Valley, Northern Sonoma and Sonoma Coast. Each of these has its own AVA title and encompasses several sub-AVAs within its boundaries. |
