Tasted by Brian Glas on 3/27/2024 & rated 92 points: Pale garnet color. Floral notes on the nose. Big hit of sweet cranberry fruit. Tangy acidity. A great wine for when you are starting to think all wines taste the same. This is different in a good way. Some light spice. Excellent balance. Very nice. (696 views)
Tasted by Jon Mills on 1/10/2024 & rated 91 points: Although I’ve had a few bottles, I always find this wine a pleasant surprise - almost the colour of rose but with ab aroma of strawberries and a deliciously dry taste. (1362 views)
Tasted by frvi on 10/29/2023 & rated 91 points: Tastes like America. Earthy, strawberry, Pinot like. Highly enjoyable! (603 views)
Tasted by Biskuit on 10/12/2023 & rated 92 points: LOVE this wine. See prior notes. (1365 views)
Tasted by Max S. on 7/1/2023 & rated 92 points: Chilled it down and drank with pizza, it was a winner as usual. (1649 views)
Tasted by Discobiscuits42 on 5/23/2023 & rated 92 points: What an absolute BEAUTY in the glass. Color has really deepened since the last bottle about two years ago. Nose-tea, orange, grassy. Less blushy color more evil dr. Evil red. Crazy complex, delicate on the front end in body unfolds into a swirling cascade of tea, orange, carrot, oregano. A touch hot on the back end does unfortunately detract. Subtle acid brings support and tannins are indeed subtle as noted by a prior commenter. Despite a delicate entry it does not present as thin. Would have preferred a touch more acid. Improved for sure. Very successful wine. (1721 views)
Tasted by dera on 5/22/2023 & rated 89 points: Very pale brick/garnet, there are rose wines darker than this.
Nose with tart but pure red fruit, campari, some crushed pepper and florals and tea.
Palate is medium bodied, fresh, just a touch of acidic lift. Fruity with red cherries and strawberries, black tea, and campari in palate as well.
Right off the bat this used to have really grippy tannins but they are rapidly evaporating, now almost completely dissolved and smoothened out. Finishes medium with pure red fruity notes.
Time to drink up as I don't think it will evolve anywhere, definitely a wine to drink young. Good stuff still! (1824 views)
Tasted by Biskuit on 3/24/2023 & rated 92 points: DAMN. I love this wine. Outdoors spring patio pizza killer vibes. (2032 views)
Tasted by jonh1 on 3/6/2023 & rated 96 points: Bottle 4. This wine is so good. It’s underappreciated because of its price and the unusual grape. If it was $98 and marketed as “punching above its price”, it would sell out and be on Top 100 lists everywhere. (2053 views)
Tasted by ChateauShiny on 2/28/2023 & rated 91 points: First time ever having a Mission grape wine.

At first, I was wondering if I poured a glass of rooibos (red) tea. Light but floral nose supported by cloves, raspberry, and orange peel. Light bodied and just an interesting wine all around. Palate starts off with strawberries, watermelon, orange zest, and a bit of raspberry. A much larger grippy tannin structure then gracefully replaces the fruit with white pepper, ginger, and a bit of arugula. Long finish that just keeps on building up. As it gets some air, I start to get more oak influence on the finish along with a dash of caramel.

Had no idea what to expect, but I am pleasantly shocked. Probably should not have opened this on a Tuesday night - this is way too thought provoking. Very soft, delicate, and nuanced. Really looking forward to trying the 2018 that was part of the BD14 offer. (1929 views)
Tasted by lucagiupponi on 12/27/2022: What a unique wine. A steely disposition in such a gentle frame. Captivating. (2013 views)
Tasted by Jon Mills on 10/25/2022 & rated 93 points: Delicate and delicious (1920 views)
Tasted by AndrewSGHall on 10/21/2022 & rated 94 points: Sick good. Pale color tells you that you are going some place very different and this ends up as a sum better Mashup of aged dry white port and Mission fruit. Fig and oolong. This is just amazing for how much is going on at a barely liminal level. Maybe better note later after I process.

With air, it dials back a bit on the mystery but is still a beautiful wine. (1862 views)
Tasted by ptaylor2112 on 10/18/2022 & rated 91 points: ANDREWSGHALL's comment on aged dry white port is brilliant.

Agree with the other notes of berries and tea. This is very good.

Noticeably less oak than the 2018. I'm not sure if that was due to winemaker's barrel choices or a function of bottle age. (1677 views)
Tasted by adamanko on 9/3/2022 & rated 90 points: Fun! Not like anything else I've drunken. Some candy, some tea with berries underneath. Wish I had bought more. 90? (1739 views)
(1634 views)
Tasted by dera on 8/7/2022 & rated 91 points: Not much has changed since last time. I think it is losing a bit of its "Pinot-ness", and the savory tea notes are getting more pronounced. Still a very enjoyable wine. (1634 views)
Tasted by LetItRide on 7/12/2022 & rated 91 points: Great for summer consumption with a chill. 55-60° F. is ideal. On first sip the American oak does show up but with a prior quick double decant before tasting this subsides and is a non issue. Beautiful bright light red that brings out cinnamon / white pepper spice wrapped around a core of fresh ripe mix of strawberries & raspberries. I uploaded a photo of this wine in a glass which conveys the electric “kool-aid” red hues.
Long live July ! (1694 views)
Tasted by jviz on 7/11/2022 & rated 92 points: Delicious wine. Pours deep pink like a tavel. Such an interesting nose that harkens an aged bordeaux, while the structure and acidity of the wine feel more like a young barbaresco. Unique throughout but well worth looking into (1849 views)
Tasted by Biskuit on 6/30/2022 & rated 92 points: Stunningly delicious (1470 views)
Tasted by forceberry on 5/9/2022 & rated 88 points: 100% Mission from the dry-farmed +50 yo Somers Vineyard located in Lodi, next to the Mokelumne River. Fermented spontaneously, aged in (American?) oak barrels, bottled unfined and unfiltered. 12,5% alcohol. Total production 600 cases. Tasted blind.

Very pale, fully translucent rusty-reddish orange color, not unlike oolong tea. The nose is sweet and fragrant with a spicy character that makes me think of Pinot Noir; there are aromas of strawberry-driven red fruits and spicy Pinosity, some sweet nuances of toasty oak, a little bit of ripe cranberry, light nuances of caramel and a hint of floral lift. The wine is clean, round and sunny on the palate with a light-to-medium body and dry flavors of brambly raspberries and overripe frozen strawberries, some oaky notes of caramel and sweet toasty spice, light crunchy nuances of caramel, a little bit of peppery Pinosity, a hint of raspberry marmalade and a touch of clove. The overall feel is a bit on the soft side, due to the quite modest acidity and light, almost imperceptible tannins that contribute a little bit to the velvety texture, but still the wine feels a bit more substantial than the appearance makes you think. The finish is juicy, long and somewhat toasty with flavors of ripe strawberries, some caramel, a little bit of cranberry sauce, light peppery notes of spicy Pinosity, a hint of mocha and a touch of sweet baking spices.

At first I was quite baffled by this wine - it looked and smelled like a very ripe Pinot Noir (with perhaps American oak), but on the palate it reminded me more of Grenache with its ripe, strawberry-driven fruit and quite soft structure. However, before I could guess anything, I was told that this wine was not a Grenache or Pinot Noir and I probably wouldn't guess it - which immediately sent me pondering what on earth this could be. There seemed to be some American oak here, which made me think we must be in California. The color suggested a grape variety low in color, yet it wasn't a Pinot Noir or a Grenache, and the lack of structure didn't seem to coincide with any of the light-colored varieties grown in the US I could think of - apart from Mission, of course, so I had to go with that one - and a bullseye with the first guess! All in all, this was a nice, nuanced and surprisingly Pinot Noir-like red (I guess the combination of a light body, red-toned fruit and the oak spice imitated the spicy Pinosity one can find in, say, German Spätburgunder). However, even when served pretty cool, the overall structure was a bit on the soft side and I really could've used a bit more acidity and tannic grip. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the wine's airy lightness, nuanced fruit flavors and modest, unobtrusive alcohol very much. Not a grand vin by any accounts, but a lovely, eminently drinkable light red wine all the same. Priced somewhat according to the quality at $29, but a steal at the special sale price of just $11.  Tasted by JensAgo on 4/12/2022 & rated 88 points: Second go on this wine, notes as per previous review (9 March 2022). Served at 12-14 degrees today. One for the summer, for sure. (2231 views)
Tasted by abbelarre on 4/10/2022 & rated 90 points: First time I taste Mission. Extremely pale color, almost watery. On the nose I can smell a perfume of leather, wet earth, raspberries and cinnamon. When tasting the wine I suggest a slight chill because the wine is quite hot. Sweet aftertaste. Good QpR. (1968 views)
Tasted by EMichels on 4/7/2022 & rated 92 points: Allow to open up a couple of hours after opening - initially thin and uninspiring it opens up to a beautifully transparent, ripe fruited, perfectly well balanced wine after 2-3 hours (1949 views)

About:
Growing up in the 70’s meant having a hippie mum that constantly dragged me around the world on travels from the age of five, which probably prepared me for life's windings and twists.
The travels continued in my longtime parallel career as a cinematographer, where I’ve been lucky enough to be able to both live and work in many places in this world. With that came an almost inevitable food and wine interest. After settling down in California in my late 30’s, that eventually led me to home winemaking. Pretty bad at first, but I got better at it as the years passed. And like so many others, I started to dream of making wine professionally. I admit, it’s not an original thought by any means. But the day came when I had to ask myself that question that everyone has to ask themselves at some point: What could I see myself doing for the rest of my life? I could think of only one thing besides taking pictures that I’d like to do, and that was to make wine. After all, California is perfect for it, and I was already here.
I make wine from low-impact vineyards, focus on rare, forgotten, under-appreciated or historic grape varieties, because that’s what gets me excited personally. I try to make them in an elegant Old World way here in the New World. I tend to go for more restrained oak usage for best expression, but not at all opposed to oak if the wine demands it (and some do). My wines are normally bone dry, fermented naturally, contain no added chemicals, low in sulfites, unfiltered and unfined. I also don’t rush them to market, I prefer to let them age in the winery for at least a year and half or more. I find it really helps them develop and refine, as well as prepare them for further aging. The unfined, dry part also makes them suitable for vegans and those who prefer low to no residual sugar in their wines.

Mission

Varietal character (Appellation America)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
