Community Tasting Notes (average 92.1 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 138 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Mon.Maultiere on 3/31/2024 & rated 94 points: Drunk for dinner with cheeses. 13%. Deep garnet. Intense nose of Bramble fruits, smoked bacon, leather, autumn soil after rain and iron filings. Deeply complex and perfectly balanced. Benefitted from lots of air and still great after 4 weeks in opened bottle - so no rush. Just lovely. (225 views)
Tasted by T.E.D. on 3/29/2024 & rated 93 points: Once again, a beautiful representation of a volcanic oriented wine. Showing really really nice structure, intense stone elements, stone, fruit, bordeaux like. (563 views)
Tasted by Yagil on 2/1/2024 & rated 92 points: The 2006 Fattoria Galardi Terra di Lavoro is a blend of Aglianico and Piedirosso grapes from the Campania region of Italy. It is a full-bodied, structured wine with a long aging potential.

Appearance: The wine has a deep, dark ruby color with purple hues.

Aroma: The nose is intense and complex, with notes of blackberries, plums, raspberries, dried herbs, tobacco, and leather.

Palate: The palate is full-bodied with firm tannins and a long, lingering finish. The fruit is ripe and concentrated, with hints of spice and minerality.

Overall: The 2006 Fattoria Galardi Terra di Lavoro is a powerful and elegant wine that is well-suited for aging. It would be a great match for grilled meats, roasted game, or aged cheeses.

Tasted by Michael T. Zoppo on 10/15/2023: This one threw me off because when first opened, it showed kind of like a California Syrah. But a few hours later, the big fruit calmed down and what presented was a medium plus bodied wine with very clean fruit (still reminiscent of Syrah in fruit profile), forward acidity, and interesting notes of smoke. I really liked this, and the only thing that let it down just a hair was a bit of a short finish. For the price, though, this is a value in cellar worthy wine. (1329 views)
Tasted by Enfantterrible on 5/28/2023 & rated 93 points: Peaking now. Holders should check their stock (1904 views)
Tasted by albertoelli on 4/12/2023 & rated 94 points: Majestic ! (2143 views)
Tasted by gilrbo on 3/18/2023: From magnum. Drunk over a lasagna, no TN.
Interesting that ABV was at 13%, and that the sense of power, which usually comes from this wine was somewhat restrained in this case, which I found a good thing. But to my taste this lacked acidity and a sense of energy, while it had good complexity. It is still young though, and I am sure that it can develop further. (2095 views)
Tasted by Eric on 1/21/2023 & rated 93 points: This was fantastic. Smoky and brambly yet with bright, soaring notes of violet. The palate is still firm and grippy but not chalky. Fantastic acidity. (2409 views)
Tasted by T.E.D. on 9/30/2022 & rated 93 points: My third bottle over a decade. Yea nice again showing really nice complexity along a Bordeaux vein. Earthy laden with gravel, hints of of ash, green peppar, violets. The stone and ash are really present and beautiful. Have one bottle left. Will wait another few (2070 views)
Tasted by Luvwine1 on 7/30/2022 & rated 93 points: Lovely, more elegant than I expected but with dark fruits and a niose and finish of tobacco just terrific. (2144 views)
Tasted by weezie on 4/10/2022 & rated 92 points: See prior note. (2361 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 3/24/2022 & rated 94 points: Lots of fruit in the nose and flavor Concentrated, rich, and mouth filling. Nice structure and complexity, well balanced, and a very long finish. I will wait at least 4-5 years before opening our next bottle. (2328 views)
Tasted by weezie on 3/11/2022 & rated 92 points: Another great showing. Fruit, tobacco and volcanic soil harmoniously working together. Tannins are very well integrated, to the point of creating an impression of softness that younger vintages of this usually rustic wine would never be accused of. Held up well to prime rib. A crowd pleaser, as always. (2209 views)
Tasted by WST on 2/18/2022: Finally, a Terra di Lavoro that’s ready to drink! Whether you believe in heavy terroir influence or not, there’s no arguing this tastes like it was grown on a volcano. Smoky bottled cherries rest with ash and tobacco. Very fine tannins remain evident, but mostly resolved. A little less tannins and I might have been reminded of Graves. I liked this bottle. (2111 views)
Tasted by weezie on 2/12/2022 & rated 92 points: Similar to prior note, although the drying tannins were much less pronounced in this bottle. In fact, the smoothness of this bottle made it a much better match with pasta than with steak. (1863 views)
Tasted by Zorg on 2/11/2022: Hmm, maybe an off bottle. This one was over the hill but there should be plenty of life left. 87-88 p. (1708 views)
Tasted by weezie on 1/19/2022 & rated 92 points: Drinking well. Classic Terra de Lavoro character, with the edges a bit smoother than the 2011s we’ve been enjoying, owing to its age. Significant sediment was difficult to keep at bay without decanting (even pulling via Coravin brought up a fair bit of sediment). Compared to the 2011, a bit less fruit and a bit more drying, from the more obvious, albeit very fine, tannins. But nonetheless another beautiful bottle of Terra de Lavoro. (1968 views)
Tasted by pmarlo on 12/11/2021 & rated 92 points: This wine does have both bottle and vintage variation. This bottle was good but not great. I enjoyed it but was spoiled from a previous bottle/vintage being top[ knotch. Tannins about 70% integrated by my guess, as there are are still some present in the aftertaste. Wonderful food wine, top shelf for that. (1937 views)
Tasted by Magnolian on 10/26/2021 flawed bottle: Corked. Bummer. (1970 views)

Tasted by dbkitc on 9/17/2021 & rated 93 points: (at Vito's - Baltimore) Dark red - opaque. Ash, rocks, flowers, ripe grapes and pepper. The palate is full and voluptuous next to the Barolo's - good acidity. Will be fun to revisit tonight. (93)

Day 2 - still ascending. This is really good with a long life ahead. (2413 views)
Tasted by Pinotfanbg on 9/11/2021 & rated 92 points: Blue - black color. Scents of black raspberry and graphite, with a pretty floral lift. Flavor of black berry and scorched earth. Finishes with medium length on the fully ripe, fine grained tannins. Went well with spaghetti with tomato sauce. Probably better with a hunk of grilled, fatty meat. Very nice. (2152 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 8/7/2021 & rated 95 points: Big, layered complex wine. Earthy, graphite. More savory than fruity. Best served with grilled meat! (2207 views)

(GALARDI Terra di Lavoro) 2006 Galardi Dear Friends, This is always one of my favorite offer days of the year as it's the culmination of a great relationship and its maintenance throughout the years. This has been our most popular offer of the year over the past 4-5 vintages (by far) and I expect the 2006 to eclipse them all in interest - it's that good. This is one offer I have no problem advising everyone to splurge on - we have a lovely price and the wine is as direct as can be. Since the Wine Advocate debuted last month, I've been hounded by customers, wholesalers (and journalists for some reason) asking if we were going to offer the 2006 Galardi Terra di Lavoro - it seems our reputation for consumer-friendly pricing on this wine has many waiting in anticipation for the offer...here you go (but don't expect the one-time deal from last year for the 2004). One of the highlights of my spring stay in Italy every year is the chance to drink (I stress the word "drink", not "taste") the new vintage of Galardi's Terra di Lavoro. This year, I found myself in consumption - not the disease of Hippocrates but in a state of consumption with the 2006 Galardi. While the 2006 needs little introduction at this point, I will add my two-cents that this is most certainly the finest vintage yet produced by this small winery near Naples. 2001 vintage? Maybe but the 2006 has everything that venerable year had upon release plus the vines are five years older (and the overall style of the wine is far more regal and grown-up). With that said, this is our annual Galardi offer, one that has somehow taken on a life of its own. Our offer for the 2004 vintage a year or two ago was passed around and forwarded to so many collectors and countries world-wide that we received order requests from as far away as New Guinea I expect this to be no different. I will say this - the same price for the 2006 was not easy to achieve (in fact, it was almost impossible) and I ask that you let Niki know at your very earliest convenience if you have any interest: In my opinion, this wine will take its place among the reference examples of the modern Italian wine movement - give it time and you should be rewarded with an experience that is inspired by Lafite but has its hands firmly in the exotic terra firma of this special slice of Campania. A stunner. Ok, let's do the same price again - why not? VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ONE SHIPMENT ONLY at this price with impeccable provenance: 2006 Galardi "Terra di Lavoro" (Rokamonfino) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Italy7468

Fattoria Galardi

Producer website
Fattoria Galardi

This winery is run by an enthusiastic group of dedicated cousins, Maria Luisa Murena, Arturo and Dora Celentano, and Francesco Catello.
The estate is firmly committed to making wine of the highest quality and has reaffirmed this commitment by hiring the distinguished oenologist, Riccardo Cotarella
who shares their philosophy. Together they strive to maximize the intrinsic characteristics of the native grapes Aglianico and Piedirosso through attentive and careful vineyard management.
The winery and surrounding hillside vineyards are located at approximately 1,300 feet above sea level and benefit of ideal growing conditions, such as climate and exposure.
The name of their praised icon wine Terra di Lavoro or “Land of Work” in Italian, reflects the soil composition in the area which is extremely rocky, thus difficult to cultivate.
Yields and overall volume are very low; only a few thousand bottles are produced each year although the winery will have almost 30 acres under production in the future.
The owners and Cotarella decided to focus on the native varietals Aglianico and Piedirosso.

Aglianico

Varietal character (Appellation America)

The Southern Italy Outpost (on the CellartTracker Forum)

Originally from Greece and an early Roman favorite, Aglianico was planted as early as the seventh century B.C. Infused with interesting aromas of plums, raisins and licorice. Dried floral notes flow easily into the medium to full-bodied palate of black pepper, smooth, subtle cherry, and plum flavors.. A stylish, intriguing young red, with fine tannins and a ripe balanced finish.
