Community Tasting Notes (average 87.1 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 26 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by S-F on 9/8/2021 & rated 93 points: I see on the other notes here that many seem to be past their prime, but that wasn't at all the case with the one I had when visiting with winemaker Tegan. Don't think he was the winemaker when this was made, that might have been Ehren Jordan then - but this wine showed amazing (that fortnight ago). Sure, you could tell it had some age on it, but it was wonderfully integrated and feminine. No specific notes as it's been awhile, just an amazing Lodi Zin made by a great producer. (1109 views)
Tasted by pdr_urrutia on 4/13/2020 & rated 76 points: It’s done for. Nose has dissipated and the fruit on the palate has dwindled. What’s left is overpowered by alcohol, acidity, and mushrooms. (1086 views)
Tasted by jfkwines on 3/24/2017 & rated 88 points: From memory:
From a Magnum, opened and aired our for 3+ hours, initial impression of stewed fruit with hint of alcohol heat. Wine opened up ok with air and was enjoyed at a restaurant , last bit of the bottle was very dark and murky. (1737 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 7/14/2016 & rated 85 points: Fully mature sweet black plum with cocoa and plenty of earth notes. I expected it to be a bit fresher despite being almost 20 yo. (2707 views)
Tasted by godx on 8/22/2012 & rated 78 points: Magnum Madness (Salade de Fruits): From magnum. Though most of the fruit has faded, there was some sweet fruit on the nose but nothing too interesting. On the palate the glossy/baby fat fruit is gone but the sweetness still remains. The alcohol and structure also remains in full force so there’s very little balance here. Although more drinkable than the Switchback Ridge, I still don’t understand the appeal of wines like this. Drinkable. (4846 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 2/27/2012 & rated 89 points: Dark red. Nice raspberry fruit and almond nose. Very nice balanced developed red fruit flavours. A nice long still tannic finish. As good as the Contra Costa and much better then the Old Vines. (4006 views)
Tasted by soyhead on 3/26/2011 & rated 85 points: Tasted from Magnum.
nose - raisin, chocolate, chocolate syrup
mouth - chocolate, cocoa liquer, per brian raspberry syrup. uberrich, desertesque, and not refreshing. not my style. (3931 views)
Tasted by CDH on 2/18/2011: Not rated. The waiter broke the cork & without asking decanted through a coffee filter. Bummer! I am guessing not totally over the hill but drink up. On the edge. (3626 views)
Tasted by Vinobruin on 9/13/2010 & rated 87 points: Drink now - wine is still fine - as they say, an old zin tastes like an old cab. This was still very enjoyable - raiseny nose, but plenty of character left. Enjoy with a 1997 Cosentino Poet (meritage wine). I preferred the Poet, dad preferred the Dogtown. (3279 views)
Tasted by plitton on 6/10/2010: Tired, fading fruit. It's still drinkable but lacks energy and expression. (2462 views)
Tasted by jfkwines on 10/23/2009: One of the great time to drink wines I am running through, Ithink this one is truly dead. Jeannette doesnt. Hgh alcohol smell, sour taste, had to decant to keep sediment out, I will try it tomorrow, but I do not hold any hopes (2240 views)
Tasted by IAMVLAD on 3/6/2009 & rated 90 points: surprisingly, still very good except for a bit of heat at the end. plenty of fruit but i would drink within the next couple of years. (2422 views)
Tasted by Frodnesor on 3/12/2008 & rated 90 points: Nose is still bright and lively, with zingy raspberry and blackberry and spice. Very rounded flavors, with pure follow-through on the ripe berry notes, some spice and brier, but the mid-palate seemed a bit hollow. (2731 views)
Tasted by Johann Von Mastiff on 12/8/2007 & rated 89 points: The color is starting to fade on this bad boy to almost a brick red. Lots of red fruit and cinnamon on the nose here. Unfortunately for me this wine seemed hot. I was suprised that the alcohol level was only in the 15.3 range. (2800 views)
Tasted by Johann Von Mastiff on 10/12/2007 & rated 87 points: This wine seems to lost a bit of its pizzaz. Somewhat hot on the finish as well. Drink up (2870 views)
Tasted by treaganjr on 8/7/2007 & rated 90 points: Wine had great nose, great fruit with patina of maturity on the palate. Well done. (3223 views)
Tasted by jfkwines on 2/27/2007 & rated 88 points: Similar to Greg's notes last week. Purple/Brown color on the start, only slightly brown. Nose was true Turleyfrom the start. We decanted for90 minutes before the firstglass and finished 4 hours later. The wine showed different characteristics throughout. It was tight even after the ninety minute decant. But the dark fruits wer ver strong, plum and blackberries dominate the flavor. Around 60-90 minutes later the acidity kicks in and the wine starts to take a lighter texture with red cherry dominating the dark fruits. THe end the wine was still not integrated completely. I wish we had saved some for tomorrow to see what happens. The only real difference is we did not find the raisiny character mentioned last week. The real question for me is what to do with the Magnum, the only magnum from them I ever had. (3027 views)
Tasted by Greg W on 2/21/2007 & rated 87 points: Popped and poured - no decanting. Color was lighter than expected - brownish purple. The nose was immediately open - classic Turley zin notes - spicy, tangy, ripe berry notes. On the palate, the wine didn't show nearly as well, as it seemed a little disjointed. The acidity initially juts out, then when the fruit shows, it has a decidedly pruny edge to it. The wine reverts back to fine form on the finish, which actually comes across as somewhat refined, with excellent length and ample power. Overall, a great nose and a great finish, but the mid-palate suffers in comparison, making it hard for me to love the wine. (3360 views)
Tasted by Wine Cellar on 12/1/2005 & rated 94 points: A dark purple red with aromas of raspberries and other red berries. A well balanced Zin that is not too sweet and no alcohol burn with a nice lingering finish. (3807 views)
Tasted by SadEdjo on 11/15/2002: rich plum & blackberry. firm tannins & acid (2528 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 7/9/2000 & rated 93 points: JAMMY DEEP RICH FRUIT IN THE NOSE AND FLAVOR, BLACK CHERRIES, RASPBERRIES, CHOCOLATE. MOUTH FILLING WINE. HUGE ZIN WITH A LONG FINISH. (495 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
