Community Tasting Notes (average 89.5 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 29 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 11/12/2023 & rated 90 points: A magnificent Mas de Daumas Gassac vertical from the private cellars of Allard Jakobs (Restaurant Sinck, Amsterdam, NL): Single bottle. Lighter and thinner year, shows pretty well, not a lot of fruit left but it’s beautifully mature in a gentle way, with some life sustaining tannins. (1486 views)
Tasted by DoubleMagnum on 4/30/2022 & rated 90 points: Fully mature. Dark fruited, leather, soil, wet forest. Full bodied but leaning out, tannins are fully resolved. Time to drink this. (665 views)
 Tasted by François1986 on 10/6/2021 & rated 93 points: Robe Vermillion d'intensité moyenne +.

(858 views)
Tasted by Lype on 9/8/2020: Light and a tad spicy, a bit one dimensional, greasy tones, not the strongest vintage for this wine or not the best bottle. (1070 views)
Tasted by forceberry on 9/8/2020 & rated 92 points: A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (58,7%), Syrah (21%), Malbec (7%), Merlot (6%), Cabernet Franc (3%), Pinot Noir (2,3%), Tannat (1%) and the remaining 1% rounded out by a blend of Barbera, Dolcetto and Nebbiolo from Italy. Fermented and macerated for 20 days in stainless steel tanks, aged for 12-15 months in oak barrels ranging from new to 7 years old. 12,6% alcohol, 5,7 g/l acidity and pH 3,61. Total production 68,000 bottles and 1,500 magnums. Decanted for 3 hours, tasted in a Mas de Daumas Gassac 2017-1989 vertical.

Aged and slightly translucent blackish red with a tertiary mahogany hue. The nose feels ripe, intense and quite evolved with complex aromas of juicy blackcurrant, some meaty notes of charred game, light oxidative soy sauce tones, a floral hint of violets, a touch of exotic spices and a whiff of sappy greenness. The wine is dry, tough and somewhat lean on the palate with a medium body and savory flavors of tart red plums and cranberries, woody notes of pencil shavings, some gamey tones, a little bit of sour cherry bitterness, light nuances of garrigue, a hint of pipe tobacco and a touch of wizened blackcurrant. Compared to the quite tertiary nose, the wine is surprisingly youthful on the palate. However, it also feels somewhat tough and lacking the ripeness the other vintages of Mas de Daumas Gassac have shown. This isn't unripe or green in any way, but its lack of obvious ripeness is quite noticeable when tasting this many Gassac wines in a row. The wine is noticeably high in acidity with still quite grippy and assertive tannins. The finish is dry, lean and quite tannic with lean and crunchy flavors of cranberries, bitter sour cherries, some bloody notes of gamey meat, a little bit of earthy garrigue, light redcurrant tones, a hint of tobacco and a touch of wizened blackcurrant.

A very nice, fresh and somewhat lean vintage of MdDG that is both surprisingly youthful for its age (despite the somewhat tertiary nose) and lacking the ripeness typical of Gassac wines. Not that it's a bad thing, since the wine doesn't feel green or forbiddingly tough in any way. Basically this is a characteristic you might only notice when tasting consecutive vintages at one go. All in all, this is a very nice effort that feels like it is still going up, although the wine is drinking quite well right now. Drink or keep. (1705 views)
Tasted by faivre_eric on 12/30/2018 & rated 94 points: Similar showing as 18 month ago.
Very soft and elegant.
Nose of the forrest, mushrooms, leather and musk.
Tannins are fully integrated and there is a good acidity helping the overall balance.
Great structure and very elegant!
Medium length (1399 views)
Tasted by faivre_eric on 6/28/2017 & rated 95 points: Wonderfull surprise for a wine I was not sure if it was over the hill or not.
First lovely balance between fruits and tannins, beautiful complexity.
Great structure and very elegant!
Medium length.
Most likely has a few more years till it reaches the end of its drinking window. (1775 views)
Tasted by tendring on 11/19/2015 & rated 90 points: Wine Education Service - Mas de Daumas Gassac (LSE): Orange rather than brown.
Very pleasant mature nose.
Fruity and very attractive, good tannins, very drinkable, pretty long. (2806 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 11/17/2015 & rated 89 points: Monthly Tuesday group #003: Mas de Daumas Gassac Vin de Pays de l'Hérault vertical of 16 vintages (by DJ): In the bouquet cherries, chocolate and some rustic flavors. On the palate plums, mushrooms and earth. Firm acidity and fairly soft, slightly drying tannin. Although the wine is fairly full bodied, the acidity is a bit lean. (3213 views)
Tasted by fredb on 7/19/2015: Dark red color with medium transparency. Aromas of plum, currant, vanilla, and meat. Red fruited on the palate with full integration of tannins. Paired well enough with summer grilled ribeye, corn on the cob, and even worked ok with tomato caprese (not my first choice of pairing). This one is "there" and will probably stay "there" for awhile, but I don't see it getting better for my tastes. Drink, but no hurry. (2593 views)
Tasted by Kriz on 6/23/2014 & rated 86 points: Mas de Daumas Gassac Vertical (Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam / Bridges (*)): Ageing on the nose. Dried currants. Don't wait to long with this vintage. (3979 views)
Tasted by johneagle on 8/30/2013 & rated 90 points: After reading Ms Robinson's notes I wasn't expecting much and this was a really pleasant surprise. Early on, well balanced tannin/acid/fruit though it softened over time. I popped and poured and it was very good throughout the 2 hours it took me to drink it.
Leather and strawberries (3215 views)
Tasted by DoubleMagnum on 12/1/2012 & rated 91 points: Very well developed. It would've definitely fooled me for Bordeaux! (2884 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 4/11/2012 & rated 89 points: Monthly Tasting Group HWS #068; Mas de Daumas: Vertical of 6 vintages white and 13 vintages red. (By DJ): Fruit yoghurt, dark cherries and leather in the bouquet. On the palate chocolate and coffee. Dark cherries as well and a bit dusty. Firm amount of acidity. A mouth full of wine with drying tannin. Overall at this moment a little less impressive and concentrated than the 1992. Ready now; no hurry. (2445 views)
Tasted by hadwin on 3/29/2012 & rated 88 points: WES - Mas de Daumas Gassac (South Hampstead High School): Medium intense, very little signs of age. Youthful astringency on the nose with some spice. Cassis dominant on the nose. Soft, rich with sweet fruit on the mid palate. Good length but not as long as some of the other vintages. (3496 views)
Tasted by tendring on 3/29/2012 & rated 92 points: Wine Education Service - Mas de Daumas Gassac (South Hampstead High School): Fairly youthful looking.
Lovely nose, development and lovely fruit.
Lots of fruit, plenty of soft tannins, very elegant soft mid palate, very long. (2469 views)
Tasted by fredb on 4/4/2010: Medium-deep red color. Decanted three hours in advance of consumption. Aromas of red berries, plums, currants, meat, and mushroom broth. On the palate, this is middle weight, but still very fresh showing currant, meat, and plum notes with a sweet tobacco note creeping into a moderate finish. Not a blockbuster, but every element seemingly in its place and in balance. Plenty of structure and fruit here to carry it further in the cellar, but mature and ready to drink. Drink or hold. (2377 views)
Tasted by hadwin on 2/4/2010 & rated 80 points: WES - Mas de Daumas Gassac (LSE Holbourn): Older looking with a distinct colour change. Garigue nose with little fruit and a touch dusty. Smooth on the palate but little of interest left. What was there was good but quite short. This vintage had significant bottle variance with distinctly different characteristic being noted by those with the other bottle. (2646 views)
Tasted by tendring on 2/4/2010 & rated 82 points: Wine Education Service - Mas de Daumas Gassac (LSE): Showing plenty of age.
The nose is developing well, some fruit - but is the age coming through too much?
The mouth is definitely showing age, there's a slight dustiness to cope with, medium length. (2739 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 4/23/2009 & rated 91 points: Monthly Tasting Group LTB 2009-05; Mas de Daumas: Vertical of 12 vintages (by DJ): Beautiful smoky and mature bouquet. Very juicy wine with ripe cherries and blackberries. The bouquet as well as the taste makes you think you are in an autumn forest. Soft bitterness in the finish. Beautiful wine. (2411 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 4/12/2009 & rated 91 points: Occasional tasting group: France: Languedoc. (@ JdZ): In the bouquet dark berries and cherries, also smoke and earth. Same impressions on the palate. Beautiful acidity and soft tannin with still a pleasant bite. (2374 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 3/20/2008 & rated 88 points: The bouquet is probably the best component of this wine with beautiful oak and cassis. The taste is juicy with sticky as well as soft tannin. (1875 views)
Tasted by Spencer on 12/8/2007 & rated 91 points: Much better than my previous bottle. Very earthy and gamey, but with a solid core of dark fruit. Complex, and constantly changing in the glass. Balanced, with a persistent finish. I would drink this wine up over the next couple of years. (2379 views)
Tasted by tendring on 11/23/2006 & rated 89 points: Wine Education Service - Mas de Daumas Gassac: Delicately perfumed, really attractive fruit.
Fruity, soft, balanced, attractive, drinking really well, quite long. (2135 views)
Tasted by tendring on 5/19/2005 & rated 91 points: A little age showing.
The nose is somewhat restrained.
Good attack, fruity middle (blueberries), excellent length. (822 views)

Mas de Daumas Gassac

Producer Website

Source: VinConnect (VinConnect.com)

What wine wine with no appellation is being considered by the expert and wine connaisseurs as «The only Grand Cru of the Midi» (Hugh Johnson), «A Lafite in Languedoc» (Gault & Millau); « One of the 10 best wines in the world» (Michael Broadbent) or simply «Exceptional» (Robert Parker)?

Within 40 years the Mas de Daumas Gassac wines have reached the rare status of «cult wine» that is only given to a limited number of exceptional estates in the world.

The estate has been farmed in the traditional and natural way for hundreds of years before the Guibert family established the Grand Crus vineyard of the Gassac valley. The terroir and microclimate of Mas de Daumas Gassac was rediscovered in 1971 by Henri Enjalbert, Professor of Geology at Bordeaux University. He considered the Gassac valley to be “the ideal and unique terroir to produce a Grand Cru wine.” The estate benefits from a rare and still unexplained red, powder-fine glacial soil strikingly similar to that of the best parts of Burgundy and a cool microclimate derived from the Gassac river, several natural springs, and the influence of the nearby mountains and sea. These characteristics are extremely rare in the South of France.

Divided into 63 small vineyard plots among 3.000 hectares of protected forest cultivated without any chemicals or pesticides, Mas de Daumas Gassac remains a virgin land farmed with total respect of mother Nature to preserve its balance.

With the specific soil of the Gassac valley, a very cool microclimate, dozens of different grape varieties and winemaking, ageing «savoir-faire» inspired by the great Emile Peynaud, the wines form Mas de Daumas Gassac are incomparable to any other and have established a style of their own. There are few wineries on earth that one can point to as being responsible for creating revolutions, let alone in one in a country with as esteemed a wine tradition as France. Yet this is precisely what Mas de Daumas Gassac has done for the past forty years!

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.
