Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.7 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 22 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by AudunG on 2/26/2024 & rated 89 points: Golden color. Delicious floral aromas with apples, mang, honney, wet stone and some petro (diesel). Full bodied and mature in the mouth. The high acidity level adds a balncing freshness to the otherwise quite sweet wine (88 g/l). Good now, but can be stored at least another 10 years. (522 views)
Tasted by DaleW on 2/19/2024: Exotic, with lush mango and papaya, honey accents, sweet but with good acids. A bit much for me but well done. B (476 views)
Tasted by Obi-Wan Cannubi on 2/16/2024 & rated 88 points: Tropisk. Balansert. (331 views)
Tasted by Per-Harald on 2/10/2024 & rated 91 points: This 2011 is irresistibly good. Mineral nose, lime, green apples and honey, on the palate petroleum, layers upon layers of flavour, peach and pear and high acid, perfect for spicy Thai. alcohol 7.5%, acid 9.5 gr/l, sugar 87.7 gr/l. 91p (505 views)
Tasted by depechemoroder on 1/4/2022 & rated 92 points: I'd echo the comments around cherry, which is something I did not previously find. There is something 'cocktail-like' about the fruit, which has sort of evolved into its own thing, but with that sharp acid and creamy texture. There is a roundness here that feels indulgent and I'm now treating these as cheese wines. Delicious. (919 views)
Tasted by cweiss on 9/10/2021: Orleans. Really really good. Quite sweet but balanced by excellent acidity. Considerable cherry note, which surprised me, and would have guessed Nahe blind. Lot of other fruits too. Still young but drinking great. (862 views)
Tasted by StainedGlass on 10/3/2020 & rated 92 points: Layers of tropical fruit with a nice acidic structure and a long finish. Great pairing with spicy Thai or Indian food or by itself. No petrol. 7.5% abv. (938 views)
Tasted by Rieslingfan on 2/12/2019: In a word, luscious. Rich tropical fruit, accented by lime zest. Acidity that was once buried by massive fruit is now an equal player, making the wine both exciting and refreshing. It’s still very young, with almost no developed elements other than a Chenin-esque lanolin note, but it is so good. Have some fun and drink one. (1532 views)
Tasted by depechemoroder on 1/12/2019 & rated 92 points: Not terribly different from my last note. Really ripe peach and flutterings of exotic spices and flowers. Rich and sumptuous , but beautifully balanced with rapacious acidity that cuts through the viscous honey on the finish. (1144 views)
Tasted by depechemoroder on 7/27/2018 & rated 92 points: Some maturity starting to show, this is taking on an expansive and broad character while not quite in rich territory (yet?). Honeyed poached pears with jasmine tea and lemon verbena, exuding floral fragrance and deep concentration. Harmonious and well-honed, the finish is long and satisfying. (989 views)
Tasted by AudunG on 6/29/2017 & rated 88 points: Floral aromas, with some honey and botrytis notes. Semi sweet, round and delicious. (1273 views)
Tasted by cweiss on 6/14/2016: Classic Leitz; big sugar + big acid = big balance. Luscious and refreshin now. I'm sure it will evolve and maybe be more distinguished but delicious now. (1395 views)
Tasted by Ebrim on 2/6/2016 & rated 89 points: clear with medium lemon greene core, seems youthfull, some tiny bubbles when opened.

on the nose it's clear with medium intensity with aromas of; red apples, cool stonefruit, nectar and honey, white floral notes, hint of tropical fruit like pinapple.

on the palate it's off-dry with medium+ acidity, medium-% and medium body and flavour intensity and aromas of; red apples, lemon and hit of grapefruit, nectar and some honey, stonefruit and pinapple, mango. medium+ lenght

potential for agening 10-15years. well balanced with intensity driven by the fruity aromas, solid concentration and complexity, lenght is dominated by sweet fruity aromas and acidity. Very good quality wine. 88-89p (1371 views)
Tasted by jrobs7777 on 6/15/2015: I could not stop drinking this. I wanted to hold some for tomorrow or the next day, but it is so so hard to do. Low alcohol and absolutely delicious. Zinging spritz greets you. Lemon dominates with some spice. The acidity is essential to offset the sweetness. The sweet is there but incredibly well balanced. Lemon lemon lemon. The citrus explodes out of the glass. This may become something subtle and sublime in say 10 years. I doubt my remaining two bottles will last that long. (1451 views)
Tasted by EndreS on 11/25/2013 & rated 91 points: Second bottle this year.

Complex and delicate nose of pickled citrus, mandarin, zest, green apples. I could just sit here and smell the wine forever without actually tasting it.

Smooth but lightly tingling mouthfeel. It still has that rounded sweetness to it, without ever feeling dull. Plenty of lively acid to balance it out. The finish is ever so long, and it has that lovely grapefruit-like bitterness to it.

Delicious. (1586 views)
Tasted by StainedGlass on 7/27/2013 & rated 93 points: Simply delicious. The immediate impression is sweet tropical fruits and you might think desert wine, but wait, there more. The sugars dissipate and a stoney minerality enters the scene, combining for a surprising depth and long finish. A desert wine can sometimes wreck your palate, this is gentle and refreshing despite the sweetness (7.5% abv). Beautiful floral nose. This is a young baby, but already engaging. I am going to buy more because as good as this is now, it will only get better. (1430 views)
Tasted by WineScoundrel on 5/19/2013 & rated 93 points: Tanzer hit the nail on the head. QPR, baby! (1256 views)
Tasted by winepog on 5/19/2013: Was very nice, but drank it in a group of wines and my palate was overwhelmed already. I sense that this should be aged for 10-15 years. (1289 views)
Tasted by EndreS on 5/8/2013 & rated 89 points: Starts of VERY tight on the nose, maybe a bit reductive. Gradually gives of a delicate smell of sweet zest, mandarin orange, minerals, apples - the lot. Complex.

Very finely balanced. It has a rounded sweetness to it without being dull. Long and slighty bitter (citrus peel/grapefruit) finish with minerals and citrus. (1167 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 10/8/2012 & rated 93 points: WXTP Tasting III (TH's Place): What a gorgeous Spätlese - this was far and away my favourite wine of the tasting. It was very tight on the nose initially, almost reductive maybe, with a touch of struck matchstick to go along with subtle scents of stone fruit and mineral. Given a bit of time though, it opened up beautifully into tropical tones of lychee, pineapple and sweeter apricots scents - still a bit one-dimensionally fruity, but rather pretty. As expected from a 2011, the palate had a nice, moreish richness to it, but this was underpinned by a zip and freshnes that put the Mosels on show to shame. Here, bright flavours of lemons, orange and grapefruit were speared through by surprisingly sprightly acidity which lent the wine a lovely purity in spite of its Rheingau weight and the sweetness of the vintage - I really liked the energy and verve that it displayed. While it had a lot of depth, it was still the crisp focus and nice lines on the wine that really stood out, with little shades of minerality just peeking out here and there beneath the fruit. Great finish too – long, powerful and persistent, with a lovely citrus glow underlined by some sweet stone fruit notes. Obviously very young and really primary, but boy there is a lot to admire about this wine. It should be smashing in 6-7 years and has the bones to keep developing for a long, long time after that. Leitz has been amazingly consistent over the past few years, and to be able to produce something so fine and controlled from a vintage marked by lower acidities - bravo! (2130 views)

(Leitz Rüdesheimer Berg Roseneck Riesling Spätlese) ($42.00) Oh, again. Steadily miraculous for three years now; a melting serenity, an endless length, and a firm pith of quartz and apple leading toward the deliberate finish, and an ether of apple-blossom breathes back to you; your Mom doesn’t love you like this loves you. And if you ever lost your soul, it comes smiling back to you here. For this gentle divinity, this focus and spiritual purpose, no “rating” can really apply – including mine. Hale, focused, diligent, of sweet good cheer. Not merely giddy, but calmly, wonderfully happy. +++

#2014 Vintage Notes:
2014 Vintage Report by Terry Theise
2014 Vintage Report by Wine Spectator
"My gut still tells me the Saar (and to some extent) the Ruwer are better overall in 2014 than the more storied areas of the Mosel proper, but those that spent the requisite time living in their middle-Mosel vineyards made some of the most electric and "feathery" Riesling in a long time (maybe the finest in 20 years - yes, it's true!)" - Jon Rimmerman (Of course only a very short historical memory would call the Saar and Ruwer less 'storied' than the middle Mosel - jht)

Rheingau

VDP Rheingau (Official site) | The Rheingau (Wines of Germany) | Wikipedia about The Rheingau
On weinlagen.info

The small but fine wine-growing area Rheingau offers one for the culture of the vine ideal microclimate and best soil conditions. The Rhine runs uninterruptedly almost one thousand kilometres from Basel up to its muzzle into the North Sea, in a northerly direction. With a short exception - the Rheingau. The Rheingau mountains force the river to a change in direction here. The vineyards falling in this region to the south stretch really to the sun. The king of the white wines, the Riesling, finds ideal local conditions for the unfolding of his fine fruity and elegant type of vine character on the multilayered weathering grounds with loess, loam and sand additions.
