Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.8 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 12 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by ShakinSwedens on 2/22/2024: So good! Strawberries compote, hay, structure without the typical Nebbiolo tannic wall. A beguiling combination of softness, fruit, linearity, structure and early complexity. This my 8th of the case and really starting to show. Given the vintage this is even more remarkable. Unique Langhe Nebbiolo! The kind of red-fruited purity that Pinot Noir lovers will lavish £100+ a bottle on. (234 views)
Tasted by Danger dynamix on 2/12/2023 & rated 90 points: Pure and fine boned
Very mascarello style - bright cherry nose , clean and very light juice
The alcohol bothers me a little (15abv) - it takes over

Tasted by Macdog on 1/12/2022: Red fruit, light, excellent. Barolo lite on the N and P. Great qpr. Drink now, not sure if this is made to age but the note below is interesting re the wine on day 3. (1301 views)
Tasted by ShakinSwedens on 12/18/2021: A lot to enjoy here- a pretty and pure red berried and quite light Nebbiolo on day one, we skipped day two and on day 3 the palate has filled out and there is a silky depth and opulence that’s always kept fresh and lively by the puckering tannins and sheer juiciness. Super nose throughout. 4th of 12 bottles- this one the best so far. (1133 views)
 Tasted by pren on 12/15/2021 & rated 88 points: 不太好。略失望 (1164 views)
Tasted by Tony Ling on 4/17/2021 & rated 93 points: Opened 3 hours upon serving into Zalto Burgundy glass (“Root” day): pale

More candied red cherry and date fruits and floral spices

Minerality driven rather than acidity. A lot of white spices from mid palate to finish.

Less edgy than previously tasted.

93 points. (1403 views)
Tasted by rbrereton2 on 3/26/2021 & rated 91 points: A wonderful introduction to the Mascarello family wines. Translucent brick red. Rose petal, violet, strawberry and cherry notes on the nose. Surprisingly soft and elegant and well balanced at 15%. A pretty and delicious Nebbiolo from the Langhe. (1175 views)
Tasted by Tony Ling on 1/13/2021 & rated 92 points: 7 hours upon opening into Zalto Burgundy glass (“Fruit” day): Pale ruby with watery rim.

Pure and transparent red cherry fruits, white peppery spices.

Very elegantly structured now (at 4 hours point, less integrated and a little more drying tannins), highly mineral, bright and fine boned acidity.

Consistent style with what I understand from this producer. 92-93 points.

9 hours upon opening, 1/6 left: purplish cherries, red florals. Very nice indeed. (1075 views)
Tasted by retired_and_roving on 4/30/2020: Wine in the time of Corona Virus - Quarantining in NYC & NH; 3/7/2020-9/1/2020 (NYC/NH): Popped and poured for our Thursday night friends Zoom Happy Hour. We wanted to transition to a lighter red following the '12 Chateau des Tours Blanc. This was the only thing on hand that fit the bill (wish I had grabbed some more as this was the last bottle). Very light mouth meal with dried cherries and herbs and some dusty tannins that grab the tongue on the finish. Very tasty! (1985 views)
Tasted by retired_and_roving on 4/23/2020: Wine in the time of Corona Virus - Quarantining in NYC & NH; 3/7/2020-9/1/2020 (NYC/NH): Arrived today and popped open for our Thursday Zoom call with friends. Pale, translucent red color. Fragrant nose of red berries, florals and herbs. Light weight mouth feel, elegant and silky with some tannins around the edge, red fruits and a bit of spice on finish. Enjoyable! (1839 views)
Tasted by decaturwinedude on 3/22/2020: Quarantine Wines; 3/10/2020-5/11/2020 (At Home): Very light, translucent red right now. Fragrant, with violet and red fruit and wild herb. Palate is light bodies, but so much presence. Vibrant red fruit and an umami essence that makes you want to drink more. Fun catching this in its youthful joy right now. (1348 views)

Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello

Producer Website

Praelum: “One of the last remaining traditional giants of Barolo. Old Botti ferments and ageing. Mauro took over in 1960 from his dad and is ranked amongst the greats of Conterno and Bartolo Mascarello. Rustic, powerful coming from the famous single vineyard of Monprivato in Castiglione Falleto.”

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.
