Tasted by Darwine on 4/3/2024 & rated 96 points: Beautiful nosecof dark fruit and leather. Flavors followed with very ripe dark fruit / even plum. The tannins and beautiful acid balance made a beautiful finish! Another good one!! (358 views)

Tasted by John McCabe on 11/19/2022 & rated 93 points: I tend to like Hall and have enjoyed visiting the winery at least a couple of times over the years. The style feels traditional, structured and not over-done on the fruit profile that can be a bit obvious and forward with many Napa cabs. This was quite excellent, very concentrated, with firm tannins, blackberry, and some dryness. This still feels young though and will benefit from another few years. Pricey, but the quality is quite apparent. 93++pts. (1985 views)
Tasted by Icemn21 on 10/30/2022 & rated 91 points: Dark fruit, spice Bold tannin mellows over time. Nice finish. (1703 views)
Tasted by tbrader on 10/17/2022 & rated 93 points: Very similar profile to last bottle -- blueberries, vanilla, licorice, smooth but structured. (1302 views)
Tasted by comlaw on 9/5/2022 & rated 92 points: Decanted for 1 hour. Big cab with lots of dark fruit and strong tannins. Long finish. (1151 views)
Tasted by tbrader on 8/11/2022 & rated 92 points: Ripe blueberries, vanilla oak. Well structured, drinking fine. (1219 views)
Tasted by doninshawnee@gmail.com on 7/30/2022: AYFKM (1267 views)
Tasted by wconnolly on 7/8/2022 & rated 90 points: Probably the most approachable at an early date of the Hall Cabernet offerings. Ripe, black and blue fruit on the palate, with some baking spice, coffee and a hint of herbs on the finish. Full bodied with grippy tannins. Best with red meats and some spicy foods. (1385 views)
Tasted by iamandyc on 5/27/2022 & rated 93 points: Keeps improving with age -- now in its prime. It's what this wine is expected to be -- dark, brooding, big bodied, large attack on the senses. Never anything shy when it hits its stride -- lots of chocolate, earthiness, embers, dark fruit, with good supporting structure. Long finish. Lacks refinement but never promised that. Fun wine. (1430 views)
Tasted by jstrovel@gmail.com on 4/25/2022 & rated 93 points: A lot to enjoy in this bottle. Decanted for 2.5 hours and it was full of fruit and a decent finish. I will likely let the others sit for another year to see improvement. (1379 views)
Tasted by msilver on 3/27/2022 & rated 92 points: This was very nice after about a two hour decant. Big and bold cab, but very easy to drink. (1511 views)
Tasted by Darwine on 2/15/2022 & rated 95 points: The wine opened up very quickly ans was deep purple in the glass. Floral nose with leather and dark fruit. Taste was dark fruit almost sweet with beautiful layered tannins giving a nice long floral finish. Great steak wine!! (1648 views)
Tasted by tbrader on 2/5/2022 & rated 92 points: Expressive. Nose of oaky fruit, hints of cedar and gentle tobacco notes. Blackberry, currant, olive, vanilla. (1460 views)
Tasted by Rltrbill on 1/26/2022 & rated 95 points: Fantastic! (1487 views)
Tasted by The Magician on 1/7/2022 & rated 94 points: A wonderful bottle with luscious red, blue and black fruit. The finish is smooth with moderately grippy tannins and alcohol that is balanced with the fruit and oak. (1215 views)
Tasted by camroc830 on 11/11/2021 & rated 90 points: Decanted for 3 hours. Heavy with fruit, even for a Hall. Tannins not grippy. Very little nuance, subtlety, or complexity. Maybe it gets better later since it's still very very young. Need a powerful dish to drink it with. BBQ or spicy Tex-Mex would help tone it down. There are older, better Halls available at this price point. (1750 views)
Tasted by winelover11 on 10/10/2021 & rated 94 points: Nice and smooth. Goes great with pasta. (1857 views)
Tasted by DesMarteau on 9/14/2021: drank way too young...tons of layered fruit...not over the top...but needs 5 years to settle down. noticeable tar and tannins present too... (2091 views)
Tasted by iamandyc on 8/8/2021 & rated 92 points: Complete transformation of this wine since my last bottle about a year ago. This was exactly what I expect from the Hall 1873. Dark, rich, structured and with lots of chocolate and other barrel related dark flavors. Held up well over two days. (2341 views)
Tasted by winelover11 on 7/24/2021 & rated 95 points: Very good on the pallet and pairs great with red meat. Will definitely keep on buying this wine. (1907 views)
Tasted by happy712 on 4/21/2021 & rated 92 points: Fruity. Great for a casual BBQ. (2133 views)

Hall

Producer website
Since first working in her family’s Mendocino vineyards, Kathryn Hall dreamed of a place to showcase fine wines alongside expressive art and masterful architecture. Now, Kathryn and Craig Hall are creating an unrivalled destination
in the Napa Valley—where winemaking excellence meets contemporary design to celebrate life and inspire the senses. In 2005, Craig and Kathryn Hall unveiled a state-of-the-art winery amid the legendary Sacrashe Vineyard in the hills
of Rutherford that is dedicated to making single vineyard and limited-production wines. The Halls acquired the historic Bergfeld winery in St. Helena in 2003, and are merging history and innovation with the completion of California's
First Winery to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Gold Certification.

HALL’s estate vineyards encompass more than five hundred acres of classic Bordeaux varietals; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc.
As winegrowers, the Halls have a strong respect for the environment and a commitment to cutting-edge vineyard technology to yield the highest quality grapes.
Through meticulous attention to detail in the vineyards, HALL wines are able to express the unique and diverse character of Napa Valley’s soils and climate.

2017 Hall Cabernet Sauvignon Eighteen Seventy-Three Napa Valley

Dark garnet in color, the wine opens with powerful aromas of ripe blackberry, wet stone, and intense, yet integrated oak. The palate is loaded with Sacrashe driven tannin and concentrated blackberry notes. Spicy oak notes of nutmeg, cocoa nib, and clove add another layer of complexity. The finish is lengthy and full of dark, balanced, and dense tannin. Another great vintage of Eighteen Seventy-Three!

IN 1873, CAPTAIN WILLIAM PETERSON came to Napa and established a pioneering winery on our St. Helena property. Throughout the 1930’s and 40’s, the site grew to become Napa’s most important winery, producing nearly 40% of its entire vintage. The fruit for our “Eighteen Seventy-Three” hails from the rugged mountain slopes that frame Napa Valley. Power and individuality underscore this wine, a deliberate intent to commemorate the trailblazing spirit of Napa’s first vintners.

Our 2017 harvest wrapped up early fall following summer heat spurts and a growing season that saw significant rain throughout the state, ending a five-year drought. The season began with rainfall that refilled reservoirs and replenished soils. Harvest began early ata normal pace, and then progressed rapidly during a heat wave in late August and early September. Temperatures cooled in mid-September, slowing the harvest pace and allowing grapes to ripen gradually. This is a strong quality vintage.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
