Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.9 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 19 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by WoodieBayArea on 2/20/2023 & rated 93 points: surprised when I saw the "community drinking range" of 1993 - 2001... here in 2023 I found this really fresh and AWESOME for its age... wedding year wine for my wife and me... red fruit with a healthy amount of acidity for lift and energy, also some round spices / umami hanging around... almost full minus body which is surprising a bit for a 33 year old Sangiovese... beat my exceptions by a mile, and well worth the $110 (incl'ng tax + shpmt) I paid (304 views)
Tasted by Hawkeye_Addict on 4/15/2021 & rated 94 points: The blueberry note below is on point. Just gobs and gobs of blueberry. This is drinking tremendously right now. The structure and balance is on point. There are tannins left to give it body, but glides across your palate with ease. Acidity is on the higher end but not obscene. Finish is somewhat short, but that could be because I am having with food. If stored properly, this should be a winner. (747 views)
Tasted by Warren23 on 5/26/2019 & rated 94 points: Gorgeous again. Great structure, sweet note with a beautiful long finish. Layers, with notes of blueberry and tobacco. (968 views)
Tasted by Warren23 on 3/30/2019 & rated 94 points: Just phenomenal again! Very good complexity, with layers and depth. Notes of blueberry, oak, and tobacco. (911 views)
Tasted by MikeATL on 12/8/2018 & rated 91 points: Not a bad Saturday afternoon: Leather and prune with a lot of sweet fruit, holding up well. (1289 views)
Tasted by Warren23 on 6/4/2018 & rated 94 points: Drinking in Taos, one of my favorite places on earth! Love the balance. Notes of earth, blueberry and menthol. Very subtle wine, which just gets better with drinking. (1057 views)
Tasted by Warren23 on 3/3/2018 & rated 94 points: Beautiful again. Notes of cherry, strawberry and leather. Excellent balance, with depth and a long finish. (918 views)
Tasted by Warren23 on 2/17/2018 & rated 94 points: Perfectly-aged. Good color, a little cloudy. Incredibly good mouth feel. Notes of earth, menthol, blueberry with a medium finish. (696 views)
Tasted by Baron Slick on 1/22/2017 & rated 95 points: What a beautiful wine. It oozes its Terroir. Mature brick appearance, with an alluring bouquet of fresh and dried red fruit, wet earth, leather, tomato leaf, and bottle age. The palate is firm and yielding, juicy and tensile, with a maturity that is wreathed in the tenacity of youthful virility. Tart cherry flavors display glossy precision which are driven by lip smacking acidity and etched with fathomless depth, structure, and complexity. The long, layered, red fruit finish is governed by mineral persistence. Classy, cultured, and dignified. A wine of place. (1466 views)
Tasted by affordableCollector on 3/5/2015 & rated 89 points: dirty red body, yellow rim, in the color. dried fruit, berry, on the nose. earth, herbal, tar, dried fruit, mocha, on the palate. medium+ acid, low tannins, on the finish. (1974 views)
Tasted by N.Bonaparte on 9/21/2012 & rated 95 points: Drank at Berns- a quick 30 minute decant brought this wine into perfect form. Nothing rough about this- 15-30 second finish. Extended life ahead. paired perfectly with Prime Porterhouse. Showing much better than the 01. (3209 views)
Tasted by mrosse on 12/27/2011 & rated 96 points: A georgeous wine! Great nose of sandalwood, violets, cedar, licorice, tea leaves, and more evolving minute to minute. Sweet dark fruit, tar cedar with great structure on the palate and a wonderful long finish. One of the top 5 wines of the year for me (3077 views)
Tasted by Chateaunewf on 12/1/2010 & rated 90 points: Garnet color. Classic tart cherry fruit anf terra cotta. Medium body and cool toned. Nicely resolved tannins makes for a smooth and elgant drink with a bit of zesty acidity on the finish to provide a good palate cleansing. Nicely balanced and medium finish. Probably drinking at its peak now with the fruit just past its apogee. Very nice. Will last several more years but no reason to wait. (3328 views)
Tasted by trankin on 10/13/2006 & rated 95 points: Dinner at Primo (Primo Restaurant, Tucson): Opened, not decanted, about an hour before pouring. Gorgeous floral aromas on the nose. Wonderful, silky tannins on the palate. Lovely licorice, with a red fruit thing going on - sort of a strawberry or cranberry thing but much deeper red than either of those. Just a gorgeous gorgeous wine. Lively acids still. Just coming toward peak - drink over the next several years. (3741 views)
Tasted by RickG on 3/26/2006 & rated 92 points: Bought on released, stored in temp controlled environs...

Lovely dried cherry notes on the nose with typical earth and mineral notes. The palate showed light fruit, but this has evolved into mostly secondary characteristics of more dried cherry and some tobacco notes. Lovely if you're a fan of seductive, subtle noses, not for people looking for concentrated fruit and huge density on the palate. But then, at 16 years, finding those would be a bit odd, wouldn't it?  Tasted by bacchus on 10/4/2005 & rated 90 points: brought to vicki and leslie for the holidays. glad we had this now since it probably will not improve much going forward. definitely need to keep open at least 90 minutes to see what the wine is about. started to fade a little after 2 hours. while the color is still deep and vibrant, the nose has shifted somewhat from chocolate to prune. tannins have softened but there is still substantial mouth feel. (2744 views)
Tasted by SteveH on 9/19/2005 & rated 88 points: Beautiful color. Out of the bottle tasted a little tannic and thin, but opened up nicely in the course of two hours. Not a powerful wine any more -- definitely not the wine it was 3 or so years ago. I wouldn't hold it any longer. (2434 views)

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
