| Community Tasting Notes (average 90.3 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 25 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by SixHedgehogs on 1/13/2024 & rated 97 points: Dinner 13th Jan 2024 (Catford): A great bottle. Dark red/brown. Thick aroma of tar, musk, fruitcake and liquorice. Layers of rich cherry and blackcurrant flavour, with oak, vanilla and tobacco. A bitter chocolate note develops as the wine aerates. Exquisite. (307 views) | | Tasted by ciaovito on 9/14/2023: Opened for our tasting group along with 3 other 1999 Barbaresco Rabaja and Rio Sordo from the Produttori along with the Cigliuti Serraboella. I only gave the wines 90 minutes to breathe and they clearly needed more This was the lightest of the 4 but over the course of many hours leftover after the tasting this wine shined. Both the Pora and Rabaja seemed to ebb and flow I guess as the tannins receded. All the wines changed pretty drastically with air. The Rio Sordo faded and was entirely the most open and fleshy It was my least favorite The group overwhelmingly loved the Cigliutti the best Great tasting and good wines. I knew that air was crucial but this was a hastily arranged afternoon tasting. All in all the Pora was gorgeous and beautifully showed fruit acid tannin. As mentioned austere at first but slowly showed it’s stiff. Bought on release. (375 views) | | Tasted by Bob H on 8/18/2023: Better on the palate - the nose has a pruney/overripe fruit note that detracts. I just had a glass of the 2001 Pora, and that wine blows this away - blind, you would never guess there was only a two year difference in age. As the wines have aged, it's become pretty clear, at least with respect to the Produttori wines, that 2001 was a much better vintage than '99. I can recall Antonio Galloni years ago remarking that '99 was a little uneven in Barbaresco, and I think that in many cases the wines are supporting that assessment. (414 views) | | Tasted by MC2 Wines on 2/21/2023: Knights of Alba (KOA) BYO Barbaresco Dinner (Legacy Records): Saddle leather, age, classic in style. This was more evolved than I expected it to be. Perhaps from the warmer weather? (985 views) | | Tasted by Brady D on 9/3/2021: Outstanding bottle. Unlike the youthful '99 Ovello a few weeks ago, this one looks it’s age. Very light red with significant bricking. First smell was concerning, I thought it was a bit oxidized. But after sitting for a few minutes it really opened up. Tons of different earthy / fungus notes around a licorice and tar core. Not much overt fruit left, but enough to keep the wine fresh and delicious, rather than just interesting. I enjoyed this bottle as much as any of the highly reputed traditional makers. I’m not always convinced by PdB, but this puts me back in the believer camp. A+ (837 views) | | Tasted by Bob H on 8/4/2019: Musky red fruit and tar on the nose.
Sweet and sour cherry on the palate, with a tannic finish. Drinking well today, with plenty of time in front of it. (1182 views) | | Tasted by Ian S on 9/25/2018: The small concerns of oxidation a year ago, amplified with this bottle. Smells 2 decades older than it is, and not a huge improvement on the palate. Leaving the rest of the bottle in the extremely vain hope a miracle occurs!
Edit: no miracle. Down the sink. (1325 views) | | Tasted by Scheper on 1/20/2018 & rated 92 points: Slow o’d for 7 hours and needs time in the glass. Herby more than fruity. Excellent. (1860 views) | | Tasted by Ian S on 11/12/2017: some concern about a touch of oxidation coming through, but let's see how the other bottle is (1512 views) | | Tasted by Outplaying on 6/4/2017: 1999 and 2001 Produttori Riservas (The Hughes): There is a green, leafy note on the nose. Rich said sun dried tomatoes. This is ripe and dense, with the fruit bordering on raisin. Some tarry notes. A bit simple and in retrospect, my least favorite of the night. (2083 views) | | Tasted by Nanda on 5/13/2017 & rated 88 points: Mostly Produttori Intro Retro Lunch (Chez Moll): Served blind. The nose has sweet dried fruit and sweet florals. The palate followed suit with sweet red cherry fruit. Just showed simpler than the other wines tonight with not as much depth or nuance. Solid, but perhaps this picks up another level with more time. Most in the group liked this much more than I did. (1527 views) | | Tasted by Burgundy Al on 5/13/2017 & rated 92 points: Chicago Wine Flock...Tim Goes All Produttori del Barbaresco (The Moll House - Chicago IL): Tasted double blind in a (mostly) Produtturi afternoon. Black and red cherry throughout with fresh flowers, licorice and dried herbs. On the elegant side for Barbaresco this young from a good vintage. Somewhat accessible, but still slightly burly. Upside from here. (1988 views) | | Tasted by Claret & CdP Gang on 10/11/2016 & rated 89 points: Bricking & translucent, nose of tar & menthol, still with acidic bite, rustic, short, enjoyed this Barbaresco but don't decant and drink within an hour and half 89 (1144 views) | | Tasted by Bob H on 6/18/2016: Light translucent ruby in the glass; complex nose with tar, roses, undergrowth, and menthol.
Well-integrated on the palate, adequate acidity, finish is a touch short. Sweet & sour cherry fruit, with just the slightest hint of unresolved tannin on the finish. Not bad at all right now - I would call this "youthfully mature", and see no reason why it couldn't drink at a similar level for another 10 years. (1336 views) | | Tasted by cardsandwine on 6/11/2015: I had a bottle of this last night at Becco in NYC. Decanted on opening at the table. The wine was sublime. Pristine translucent red hue with a classic and enticing Piedmont bouquet. Tannins were soft on a beautifully balanced palate that exhibited finesse and focus and finished with lengthy elegance. This is drinking beautifully right now. Wish I had some in my cellar. (1933 views) | | Tasted by dream on 1/23/2015 & rated 92 points: A bit of funk on the nose that blew off eventually. A lovely, elegant wine that is subtle but finely complex with notes of dark cherry, forest floor and truffles. Lighter-bodied but still structured and it really benfitted from an hour in the decanter. I love the finish here. (2198 views) | | Tasted by curtr on 12/6/2014 & rated 88 points: Light, not impressive. Drink up. (2020 views) | | Tasted by curtr on 2/11/2013 & rated 89 points: In prime drinking window. Not a very impressive wine. (2549 views) | | Tasted by wabi47 on 4/22/2012 & rated 91 points: dark color; mixed dark fruit, spice and integrated oak; potent fruit and structure (2814 views) | | Tasted by asgerG on 12/4/2011 & rated 84 points: Double decanted and waited 1h. Garnet red mature colour, orange rim, 4½. Neutral wine like nose. Harmonious on the palate but again without nothing interesting to offer, fine stucture however! +24h: no more notes have evolved, but the taste is more acidic. What a dissapointment. The last glass were turned in to a ok glüh-wine (2558 views) | | Tasted by Mr. Megabyte on 3/10/2011 & rated 89 points: Rapsberry, sour cherry, violet, pepper, musk. found it earthy, typical italian. tannis were nice. drank it over two days and on the second day it was much nicer. (2659 views) | | Tasted by ciaparat on 1/8/2011 & rated 96 points: Colour: mature but without brick. Very intense and fruity nose, towards violet. The tannins, altougth presents, are perfectly integrated and add to the complexity and balance of this wonderful wine. In my view you should drink it over the next 5 years. (2834 views) | | Tasted by redrhonewine on 4/9/2008 & rated 89 points: Restaurant purchase - decanted. Nice wine; lots of ripe, spicy strawberry and raspberry with dried cherries and cranberrries. Tannins still firm after being open for 3 hours but don't seem to be hiding the fruit. Not a stellar Barbaresco, but very enjoyable. (2320 views) |

| Produttori del BarbarescoO ok justNebbioloNebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.
Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.
"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.
Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.
