Community Tasting Notes (average 90.6 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 25 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by chatters on 11/22/2023: First Wednesday Wine Club Rhone Dinner (One Penny Red, Summer Hill): Fleshy smelling black hued fruit, berries, a little currant, touch of olive tapenade, still 'opening'. Rich, thick, dense, alcohol prickle, dark hued fruits, muted tannins are softly textured, raspy, alcohol warmth on the finish. Feels like it needs time. (346 views)
Tasted by mac-eye on 11/13/2022 & rated 94 points: Very fine. If anything, better than it was in 2020. (601 views)
 Tasted by sidaga on 3/25/2022 & rated 91 points: Robe dense;
(973 views)
Tasted by pren on 4/18/2021 & rated 87 points: 第一天,气味上,没啥出彩的地方,收紧的感觉,些微品种特征。口中的味道也类似,有厚度。接下来两次,都极差,喝不出是Syrah,就是个extracted的酒。

这是JLL的STGT 酒,五星。无话可说。 (1607 views)
Tasted by laralh on 10/24/2020 & rated 89 points: Krekling, pepper, kjøtt, hint av jordbær. Lang og fyldig. (1823 views)
Tasted by happy712 on 8/22/2020 & rated 89 points: It’s got that nice moldy sock aroma, but did not taste as good as the nose. There’s an element of complexity missing from a good Côte-Rôtie. (1784 views)
Tasted by mac-eye on 4/17/2020 & rated 94 points: Very fine indeed. Just mature enough now. Very well balanced, a real pleasure. Mature fruit, softened tannins. Deep enough to be an intense sipper yet light enough to go with white chicken dishes. Should be good until the late 2020s.

It's not clear why some people didn't like it. Some low CT ratings have no details. Perhaps it's not everyone's style. And in general, Côte-Rôties should be aged several years, at least, before opening. (1579 views)
Tasted by blackcrowb on 8/26/2018 & rated 93 points: Sweet berry and sea foam in the nose. Medium body, soft tannin but enough acid to keep it lively. It is more juicy blackberry than tarry and there is no syrah stemmyness. It is very tasty and in a good place right now. I could see this wine being easily overwhelmed if paired with something assertive. (2227 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 5/4/2018 & rated 94 points: Bricking, medium dark ruby color; savory, lifted, tobacco, smoke, green peppercorn nose; complex, silky textured, savory, tobacco, dried herb, green peppercorn, black pepper palate with good balancing acidity; medium-plus finish (1116 views)
 Tasted by sidaga on 3/11/2018 & rated 89 points: Robe violet dense;
(2259 views)
Tasted by maxima on 11/28/2017 & rated 96 points: On ressort nos classiques à l'approche des fêtes, tellement bon.
Excellent. (2934 views)
Tasted by oropeza on 7/17/2016 & rated 90 points: Bigger berry fruit up front with a dense, complex core and decent chewiness towards the finish. Some cocoa. Long. (2853 views)
Tasted by jeffreylubowski on 3/26/2016 & rated 89 points: Considering the producer and the vintage, this should have been better. The nose was like a 95. Cracked pepper and blueberry and blackberry. The palate just can't deliver. A little bit big and clunky and almost a new world density and chocolatiness. No heat, but not as exciting as it should have been. I'll say 89. (3242 views)
Tasted by La Cave d'Argent on 10/9/2015 & rated 89 points: This deep ruby wine was tasted in double-blind fashion from a bottle kindly provided by M.C. Blackberry, black olive, garrigue and dark chocolate aromas lead to a medium-bodied, fresh, seamlessly alcoholic (13.5%) palate delivering comparable flavors. The tannins are medium in weight but gritty in texture. While the middle is solid, there is a creeping green leafy element that becomes prominent on the medium-length finish. I suspect that this wine is in a bit of an awkward stage at this point. It should improve with further time in the cellar, and may ultimately merit a higher score. Drink 2017-2025. (2521 views)
Tasted by jpcairney on 4/30/2015 & rated 91 points: Quite sublime, nuanced and satisfying. Nose: a dead-heat between red fruit and savoury spice. Palate: for me, spice and pepper yet my wife sensed more fruit with a touch of pepper. A real crowd pleaser. Decanted for 1.5 hours. (2541 views)
Tasted by ccn on 5/6/2014 & rated 88 points: Cote rotie minus the elegance. Some of the classic flavours. - blueberries, a bit of leather and tar, pepper - but big, rustic, tannic, and a bit hot. Very masculine. Not a great fan of the style. (2452 views)
(2390 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 12/8/2013 & rated 92 points: Delicious red fruit and savoury spices on the nose, violets. Quite powerful on the palate, noticeble and slightly drying tannins, excellent grip and acidity, good red fruit notes, spicy, peppery, meaty. Complex and long. I just think it needs more time for all parts to fully come together - one for the cellar. 92+ (2333 views)
(2637 views)
Tasted by Fantasio on 2/15/2013 & rated 90 points: Nez épicé. Poivre. Tannin quasi absent. Doux et aimable mais... (2335 views)

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)

Since 1996, the firm of Delas Frères has fully retrieved the glory and spirit that made its fame. A highly motivated team is proud to help give a new lease of life to this great Rhône Valley wine merchant firm, founded in 1835. Under the guidance of its current management, numerous investments have been made at the winery at Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, near Tournon-sur-Rhône. A specially designed fermentation hall for the making of red wines, and a thorough rebuilding of the ageing cellar are amongst the key elements of the new quality charter from Delas Frères. This can be summed up in one sentence : place man and wine at the centre of the stage, together with terroir.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

Côte-Rôtie

Guide to Cote Rotie - Read about the Northern Rhone Valley

• The Appellation cover three communes - Saint-Cyr-sur-Rhône, Ampuis and Tupin-Semons - on the right Rhône river bank, within the Rhône "département".

• Soils : In the northern part of the vineyard, the Côte Brune, consists of extremely steep, terraced slopes of ferruginous mica schists which are covered with schist sand (arzel). The Côte Blonde has a varied geology with gneiss and granite predominating at the most southern side of the appellation.

• Climate : tempered continental. Dry, hot summers and frequent rainfalls during the other seasons. History : one of the oldest vineyards in France, first developed by the Romans. It is said that during the Middle Ages, "The Seigneur de Maugiron" bequeathed a hillside to each of his daughters, one was brunette and the other fair. Thus, were born the names of "Côte Brune" and "Côte Blonde".

• Area planted : 230 hectares (568 acres), for an annual production of 8,400 hectoliters (93,333 cases). Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2,3 US tons/acre).

• Grape Varieties : Syrah (80% minimum). An addition of up to 20% of Viognier grapes in the crop is allowed.
