Tasted by Yagil on 5/8/2024 & rated 92 points: Brunello di Montalcino tasting (at my home): a good solid rustic Brunello, at or a bit beyond its peak, quite enjoyable on its own. requires one - two hours of air.
drink now. (73 views)
Tasted by VlgJeff on 11/2/2022 & rated 91 points: Decanted for 45 minutes - with lots of sediment - but it needs even more decanter time. Lots of cedar, some leather and dark fruits (blackberry, black cherry) on the nose. The cedar and dark fruits carried over on to the palate along with some red cherry and a touch of herbs. The acidity was a bit more than needed to balance and there were still tannins on the finish.
However, the over-appearance of cedar on both the nose and palate are troublesome and may point to this wine's poor cellaring prior to my buying it at auction several years ago. (707 views)
Tasted by Wine Canuck on 1/22/2022 & rated 92 points: Tasting with old (and one new) friends (Kitchener, Ontario): This pours medium ruby with light bricking at the rim. The nose is complex and classic Sangiovese, showing leather, rosemary, dark cherry, wet hay, and forest floor. The palate is lovely with lush deep dark fruit with medium tannin and medium plus acid. Very enjoyable, open and at a nice stage in it's evolution. (2149 views)
Tasted by Mr. Mustard on 6/13/2021 & rated 92 points: Fantastic well aged Brunello. Prime time now. (1602 views)
Tasted by lewisrise on 5/22/2021 & rated 94 points: Great balance of primary secondary and tertiary aromas in flavors. (1553 views)
Tasted by WoodieBayArea on 3/22/2021 & rated 93 points: really really nice again... my friend (who doesn't love Italian wines generally -- I think cuz way back she was drinking them way to young) was googoo-for-gaga over the wine... this is full bodied for Brunello and has what I think of as a 2006 burgundy style (in terms of being slightly brutish / brooding / strong on the palate), but this one (unlike some '06 burgs I don't like) has nice acidity for balance, slight tannins still hanging around (in a nice way) and amazing flavors -- alongside the red and black fruit... the spices and umami are racing around in the mouth... this is almost like a culinary experience via a wine glass... great / unique stuff for Brunello (1756 views)
Tasted by WoodieBayArea on 3/19/2021 & rated 93 points: wow, this was a great brunello, not on par with or in the style of my favorite (Soldera), but great nonetheless... this was bigger and bolder with darkish fruit and great exotic nose... also tons of umami... just a ton going on here and not for the faint of heart (re the palate or the nose)... at peak and for some reason I thought to myself that this might be best drunk in the next few years (ie not a long hauler in my view) (1300 views)
Tasted by Mr. Mustard on 11/8/2020 & rated 93 points: Showing well now, prime time. (1046 views)
Tasted by miadelt on 2/16/2020 & rated 93 points: Enjoyed the dry, rustic flavors of this brunello. The wine has developed well since I last had it 8 years ago. It has gotten less astringent and the flavors are coming out. Should continue to last. (1135 views)
Tasted by Steve Greenhouse on 2/16/2020: Vino di grande struttura (15°), gestita però magistralmente in cantina. (1212 views)
Tasted by ILarsen on 2/14/2020 & rated 92 points: Manny of the things I wrote in my tasting from last year is clearly still valid - lots of black fruit black cherries and blueberries - spices and clearly tobacco - medium tannins and acidity - the balance is however less impressive this time compared to my last bottle - so have to lower the rating to 92. (1102 views)
Tasted by ILarsen on 5/3/2019 & rated 93 points: Took a couple of hours to open up - tbe wine is dark and full with black fruits - I am getting cherries and some blueberries and some plum your are also thinking tobacco and some spices - medium tannins and acidity - good long aftertaste - great balance where everything is well integrated - happy to give 93 - I think this is a great wine when it a last opened up. (1446 views)
Tasted by acyso on 4/18/2018 & rated 88 points: The Rotating Dinners, II.4: 2006 Brunello (Chicago, IL): Inky, dark, and burly. Too young for certain. Lots of black fruit, there's a certain quality here that reminds me of young Bordeaux, but I can't otherwise label it. Black-fruited and structural, this is clearly a well-built wine, but it's just not sufficiently expressive right now. (2755 views)
Tasted by zackmayo on 3/26/2017 & rated 94 points: After two hour decant it really shines. (2406 views)
Tasted by Mr. Mustard on 10/16/2016: Nigh alcohol on the nose, with a bit of thin cherry/cassis nose, but very muted, alcohol dominates.
Medium bodied, cherry and strawberry, mild tannins. moderate finish.
Goes well with meats, chicken, and lighter beef fare, not for the exceedingly rich dish or heavier flavored beef. (2611 views)
Tasted by Mr. Mustard on 5/14/2016 & rated 90 points: Drank at Farmhouse with herb/mustard crusted pork (3004 views)
Tasted by Mr. Mustard on 4/4/2016 & rated 91 points: Pretty good, had with some pork chops @ CS's. Good cherry flavors, moderate tannins. Will have to try again when it's had a chance to decant properly & savor. Would do well with a grilled beef or braised lamb. (2874 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 1/9/2016: Tuscan Wines Featuring Querceto di Castellina (SF Wine Trading Company): Ruby center with browning. Floral, perfumey nose. Lovely weight and feel. Excellent savory complexity with brown spice, anise, tobacco leaf, and leather. Some wood asserts itself toward the end, which detracts a bit for me, but this is a very good wine that is essentially fully mature. (2414 views)
Tasted by greidy on 1/9/2016 & rated 94 points: Wow, what a treat! Fully matured and ready to enjoy 10 years old Brunello Riserva!
Garnet young color, slightly whitish rim. medium body, nose of flowers, spices, leather and black fruits. Beautiful, fully integrated and balanced palate, very long (40 sec plus) finish. Wow!!! (2478 views)
Tasted by dsamuel on 4/15/2015 & rated 93 points: Tuscan wine tasting at home - 4/11/15 - Dark crimson color with orange rim. Medium(+) aromas of red fruits/ tobacco with excellent herbal/ cinnamon undertones, with a little barnyard aspect. Very complex on the nose and in the mouth. Tannins remain high, but are well integrated with the fruit, and this wine is drinking beautifully today. This was even better on the next day, as it appeared to meld even better, and the tannins had subsided somewhat. May benefit from 1-2 yrs in cellar, but again not in any way a disservice to drink this now. It would be really nice, and a fantasy, if all Brunellos drank like this one. (2389 views)
Tasted by Bruce 1er on 1/17/2015 & rated 96 points: En magnum. Distinctly flowery bouquet. Medium weight. Cherries, raspberries and other stone fruits., followed by soft tannins. Very charming and accessible now even in youth. (2200 views)
Tasted by brunellolover on 9/21/2014 & rated 93 points: Beautiful Brunello. Great nose, red fruit and smoke. Well structured tannins with just enough bite. Nice long finish. (2373 views)
Tasted by miadelt on 10/2/2012 & rated 89 points: Give it some time to develop. Open next 2015 (4198 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 7/18/2012 & rated 93 points: nose: very good depth and class strikes right off the bat. Though still on the tight side, there are gorgeous tones of roasted herbs, red cherries, red fruits, leather, berries and various red floral tones.

taste: medium/full bodied with big and chewy tannins and high acidity. The structure is pretty overbearing right now, but underneath there are deep tones of roasted herbs, cherries, red fruits, leather and red floral tones.

overall: this is stunning right now, but has lots of room for improvement as well. The structure is huge, but the class is there right now. It is definitely one for the future (3884 views)
Tasted by jfoski12 on 6/29/2012 & rated 92 points: Very nice wine right from the start. Red fruit and spice. Round tannins and good acid. Big Brunello, nose is the same. Long on the mouth. (3674 views)

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
