Tasted by fcxj on 10/30/2021 & rated 90 points: More tar than rose aromatically. Palate has density if not grace. (1580 views)
Tasted by faivre_eric on 12/27/2018 & rated 96 points: Very yummy!
Soft and suave.
Nose of red currants, very "jammy".
It comes across as way younger than it.
Good acidity and long finish.
No reason to rest any longer but should hold another 5 years minimum. (2770 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 11/7/2018 & rated 96 points: 2018 Villa d’Este Wine Symposium – Kelly, RJ, Justin and Kevin's excellent adventure; 11/7/2018-11/11/2018 (Villa D’este, Lake Como): En magnum. Massive nose displaying opulent slightly dry black fruit, strong licorice and caramel, leather, vanilla, tobacco, tar, a hint of mint, dark spices and iron mineral. Incredibly concentrated, layers upon layers of opulent slightly dry black fruit, unctuous, bright acidity, strong iron mineral, still noticeable tannins that are mostly masked by opulent fruit, and a long intense black fruit and licorice driven finish. It is drinking beautifully in a very youthful way but can improve for a couple more decades in magnum format. Adhering to the house style, this is an opulent concentrated and masculine wine that perhaps slightly lacking the finesse. There is a good bit of similarity to the 01 Mascarello. (3608 views)
Tasted by redwiner on 10/12/2018 & rated 92 points: Held up well, but most likely was better 5 years ago. (2529 views)
Tasted by acyso on 10/27/2017 flawed bottle: Nebbiolos, white truffles, Volume II (Chicago, IL): This should have been a great wine, but it was mostly stewed and unpleasant. (5429 views)
Tasted by FamilyLarsson on 10/18/2015 & rated 98 points: Tyvärr sista flaskan av detta underbara vin!
(5525 views)
(4657 views)
Tasted by Ramberg on 5/21/2015 & rated 95 points: Talk about developed nose!
And Gaja Barbaresco.
I pinned this down blind, apparat from the vintage.
Thought this was older.
Nose shows licorice an mass, tar, herbs, medicinal green, salty licorice, muscovado brown sugar, balsamic, Christmas spices, roses and rosehips, forest floor, and expensive sweet and wet cigar tobacco.
Elegant and mature palate, sweet fruit, sweet and ripe mashed strawberries, licorice and tar, raisins, silky and fine, with high acidity and a long finish.
Very fine and elegant mature Barbaresco.
(94 – 96) (3731 views)
Tasted by Patrik H on 5/21/2015 & rated 94 points: On the nose, tobacco, pipe tobacco, dried fruit, spices, pepper, fudge.
On the palate, Tobacco, brilliant integrated tannins, herbs and dried raisins, tar and some nice semi-sweet fruit.
Long finish

Wow that is a nice wine (4612 views)
(4655 views)
Tasted by la turque on 12/9/2014 & rated 91 points: Phoenix Society Inaugural Dinner (Chez Moi): Contrary to other recent experiences, this bottle did not show well. The appearance is vibrant and polished, and the aroma is very seductive--with Asian spices, black fruits and undergrowth. On the palate, though, the wine seemed tired and funky. Over the hill? Or perhaps just an unrepresentative bottle? (2869 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 12/6/2014 flawed bottle: Dinner with the SLDS at Mark's: Truffle, earth and a touch medicinal. Palate has the fruit dropping away, there is some interest there and the remnants of a good wine, but not near to the quality of a previous bottle from the same source. Around 85 if rated. (2087 views)
Tasted by FamilyLarsson on 9/12/2014 & rated 96 points: Otroligt bra!
Hade aldrig trott att det skulle ha denna vitalitet kvar. Fantastiskt fin frukt, fortfarande närvarande tanniner och underbar syra. Väldigt bra balans och ett riktigt bra vin. (2653 views)
Tasted by redwiner on 1/24/2014 & rated 96 points: Quite a bit of sediment in the bottle had me concerned about the cork. Luckily it meant nothing. Nice dark color, great body. Took about 30 minutes to open, then lots of licorice and forest floor. Classy wine in the middle and the finish was very long Excellent balance. The wine got better and better over a 3 hour period. One of the best three wines I've ever had. (2944 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 12/20/2013 & rated 97 points: Beat your 2013 WOTY Dinner: Entrancing, enticing and unbelievably enchanting. Like skydiving rapidly toward a field of roses, with additional swirling aromas of earthy five spice, mulberry, licorice and iron. Complex and with beautiful elegance and texture, the tannins are still present and they enhance the fullness of the fruit. Incredible. Likely my top wine of 2013. (3712 views)
Tasted by Vini Ciclismo on 11/29/2013 & rated 92 points: A better bottle than the previous one but cork a bit dried out. Very clean youthful fruit, dark licorice and floral bouquet. Drying tannins. rich, tasty and refined but still with an impressive level of tannin. Good drinking. (2788 views)
Tasted by willthethrill on 11/22/2013 & rated 94 points: For me the big hit of our 5 bottle Italian wine dinner. Medium body. Earthy and lush dark fruits. So consistent. Just got better and better with every sip. (3032 views)
Tasted by esburgundy on 11/21/2013 & rated 96 points: 678 Italian dinner, Deep dark maroon color, looked younger than its age would suggest. The bouquet was full of licorice, mushrooms and truffle. In the mouth the wine exploded with great power and finesse. The finish was long and superbly balanced. The wine got bigger with time. Last bottle bummer. Brava Gaja (2505 views)
Tasted by Vini Ciclismo on 4/29/2013 & rated 90 points: Hint of oxidative chars, coffee, toffee, tar and plum.
Soft fleshy, rich dark fruits, plentiful but soft tannins, oxidative chars add complexity, blueberry and plum fruits still dominate with tar spice. Past it's peak but still drinking well. (2491 views)
Tasted by lolo66 on 2/14/2013: not corked, but overly sweet. like brandied cherries. too bad. (2756 views)
Tasted by Jack O'Brien on 7/23/2012: I am not entirely sure how anyone can say this is drinking well. It is cloudy and has brandy-like flavors and aromas. No a trace of fruit to be found. If this is what 30 year old Nebbiolo tastes like, then what are we all waiting for? I’ll drink young and save my self the expanse and pleasantries of this. county me out. (3684 views)
Tasted by Pacalet on 7/28/2011 & rated 92 points: Nice brown color, pretty open nose with sour dark cherries, plum, licorice and camphor. Palate with loads of blackcurrant, very ripe but slightly straightforward next to a Giacosa Riserva 82 Barbaresco, v good but not yet excellent. (3732 views)
Tasted by reichken on 7/18/2011 flawed bottle: clean clear light color, roses and cherries on the nose and the mouth, med weight on the tongue, well balanced, med high acidity. wine was clear WOTD. it is at a good place for drinking (3791 views)
Tasted by Jossik on 11/27/2010 & rated 91 points: Naso di un tono brodoso di quelli buoni, poi cioccolato e menta, cuoio, peccato, soprattuto in bocca, per il legno ancora non assorbito (3508 views)
Tasted by la turque on 11/26/2009 & rated 99 points: Gave this bottle 3 hours in the decanter. The wine just keeps getting better and better with time. Lots of complex, secondary flavours and aromas. An elegant wine, yet with lots of structure and depth. The classic nose with rose petals and amazing notes of undergrowth, tar and black fruits, the wine gives and gives on the palate. An amazingly long finish. This is my kind of wine! Brilliant! Gaja

Producer website

Located in the Tuscany and Piedmont regions of Italy, Gaja makes collectible Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay wines, including the Langhe Conteisa label. Gaja wines are among the highest-rated in all of Italy. It is perhaps best known for its Super Tuscans, which are some of the most elegant on the market. However, the estate also makes top-quality wines rooted in Italian tradition, such as Barbaresco. It is perhaps the most lauded Barbaresco producer today.

Although the estate produces 18 different wines, the production is low at just 350,000 bottles per year, making these wines very rare. The best Gaja vintages include 2018, 2016, and 2015 as well as historically well-performing vintages such as 2013, 2011, 2010, 2008, 2004, and 2003. Many of Gaja’s best vintages have received perfect scores from critics

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Sorì San Lorenzo

Through the 1995 vintage, the Gaja single vineyard Sorì San Lorenzo was labeled as Barbaresco. However, starting with 1996 Gaja formally chose to eschew the requirements for Barbaresco DOCG in favor of the more humble Langhe DOC (for example by blending Barbera and Cabernet Sauvignon into the wines when only Nebbiolo is allowed in Barbaresco DOCG). What this means is that these wines are defined two ways with 1995 and older as Barbaresco and 1996 and newer as Langhe DOC.
