Community Tasting Notes (average 91.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 210 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by VinhoVerde on 4/13/2024 & rated 93 points: Medium red color with a touch of mahogany. Fragrant licorice, mineral, tobacco, cassis and smoke aromatics. Still has a little grip and tannins. Very concentrated for this property. Enjoyable now. Long aftertaste. Should continue to improve for at least 3 more years. Unusually powerful for this property.
Outperformed my 2020 note. (403 views)
Tasted by melvinyeowq on 3/29/2024 & rated 94 points: Bordeaux night: Guessed this as a traditional, good left-bank producer from a classic vintage like 2001. Smooth, sensual texture with refined tannins that made it rather Burgundian, especially with the pretty, dark red fruit. Some tobacco and mocha notes that brought you back to Bordeaux. A beautifully balanced wine that harked back to an era when DDC were producing good wines. (705 views)
Tasted by olemski on 12/30/2023 & rated 92 points: A wine of elegance, harmony and persistence. The nose points in the direction of flowers and herbs, with a slight leathery element too. Very satisfying wine that is clearly outstanding. I'm deflationary in my scores, so this is an outlier. (Decanted about two hours) (1355 views)
Tasted by AudunG on 12/28/2023 & rated 92 points: Dark, earthy and expressive aromas with tobacco and leather. Developed, rich and masculine on the palate. (1229 views)
Tasted by Vinumming & Ahhing on 10/31/2023 & rated 92 points: Bordeaux 2000 & 2001 Horizontal (Piccolino, Exchange Square, London): Charming cool greenness to the nose here as well and some dark fruits and a little tobacco. With some air there are some Bakewell notes and a redder character to the fruits. Palate is tight on pouring but soon opens out and perhaps one of the most ready to go wines of the evening. Perfect DdC structure and lightness of touch. Fabulous. (2057 views)
Tasted by oenanthe on 10/31/2023 & rated 94 points: Neil's 2000 & 2001 Bordeauxs (Piccolino, London): Served single blind alongside the 2001, and correctly called. Dark red, with a sweet and succulent nose that includes bell pepper, cocoa, soaring cassis. The fruit stands out as juicy as well as a bit chewy, very moreish, largely cassis but I get some extra sweetness from some red fruit elements that raises the level here. This is beautiful wine that is singing this evening and in a perfect spot, simply lovely. Another WOTN candidate? Yes - I think this just pips it. (1865 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 10/31/2023 & rated 94 points: Neil’s 2000/01 Bordeaux @ Piccolino: Single blind. Dense ruby. Very smooth and balanced. Classic mature Graves. Harmonious and long without scaring the horses. Quietly lovely. Very lovely. ?2000 ****1/2 (1737 views)
Tasted by Tao on 10/27/2023 & rated 92 points: This bottle shows a little tightness and a bit closed! But remain smooth and fine in texture, just a little shy! (1271 views)
Tasted by rstark on 9/4/2023 & rated 89 points: Very Old School. Maybe a bit much. Finishes quite light and a little flat (1644 views)
Tasted by Tao on 8/3/2023 & rated 93 points: A great classic! In fine texture and full of flavours, still young in my view, with more than one decade of life left! (1563 views)
Tasted by Romz on 7/23/2023 & rated 90 points: Impromptu session at my place.

Wine 2 my 1st bottle tasted blind.

Immediate whiff of barnyard, horse dung. Further aeration opened to stewed dark fruit, traces of cassis laced with of very saline & minerality driven nose.

On the palate; well resolved tannins, lots of salt minerals, mid low acidity but balanced savory & fruit notes. Felt the finish a little stunted. (899 views)
Tasted by PlanetX on 6/10/2023 & rated 91 points: Union Grands Crus Bordeaux (UGC) 2020 Tasting (Hangar 14, Bordeaux): Entry is slight and underwhelming but builds nicely with a long, juicy finish tinged with spice. (2201 views)
Tasted by blanquito on 5/11/2023: Enchanting bouquet, delicate, expressive, a little sweet and cedary with a whiff of Gravesy char, floral with minty notes and a touch of fresh herbs. 94-95 pt bouquet. Lighter bodied, tangy and bright on the palate, but with plenty of grip and persistence. Savory-sappy and a little sour, so refreshing with beef broth and lemon zest. Suave texture. I so love the nose here, it’s almost like a great Margaux. In sum, a compelling, delicious, interesting wine in a great spot. Why they changed things up at this address is such a mystery (probably the pernicious pull of Parkerization) (2051 views)
Tasted by Francophile1 on 2/10/2023 & rated 92 points: Dang! This is good juice. Decanted for 2 hours. Fully mature after 23 years in bottle. Another example of patience being rewarded by waiting to open it. Also, another reason why I will stop buying Bordeaux after the 2020 vintage because I will be dead before I can drink the younger vintages. This wine is more refined than brawny, but I love it.  Tasted by jkoenen on 12/8/2022 & rated 93 points: Supple, rounded and elegant.
More charming than impressive. (2468 views)
Tasted by achasd on 7/18/2022 & rated 92 points: Nice expression from a good vintage. Well balanced. A little dark earth to accompany the cassis. (3228 views)
Tasted by Vinumming & Ahhing on 5/13/2022 & rated 92 points: Paul D's Graves Greats (Piccolino, Exchange Square, London): Another belter. Dark fruits, hints of nutmeg, lovely richness. Classical Graves. Palate has fabulous detail and impressive length. Has time ahead. Love it. (3302 views)
Tasted by Paul D on 5/13/2022 & rated 91 points: Glorious Graves at Piccolino (Piccolino, Exchange Square, London): Notes becoming a bit sparse by this point - attractive cool dark fruit, notes of smoke and liquorice, fresh acidity good length lightly grippy finish. (3050 views)
Tasted by beatles on 3/13/2022 & rated 92 points: Served vis-a-vis the Haut-Brion, a shame, really, this was overshadowed - but it inself a great wine, no signs of decline, vertical, chalky, good acidity with a very healthy fruit, handles the vintage very well indeed. (3093 views)
Tasted by Cote d'Or on 2/12/2022: Bottle from secondary market, cork fell apart, decanted, tasted over 3 hrs
-med dark ruddy red mild bricking
-lovely subtle dark smoky plum fruit earth tobacco
-med acidity, med weight subtle plum cassis faint sousbois with some stony minerality, med/med- tannins
-really gorgeous classically structured fully mature but no hurry (2501 views)
Tasted by olemski on 12/19/2021 & rated 90 points: An excellent to outstanding wine. Light and clear in colour. Fragrant in a flowery direction, so no wonder that the seasoned tasters who got it blind went to Burgundy first. Elegant and harmonious with good persistence. A very satisfying wine that is drinking very well now. My remaining bottle will not spend many years in the cellar, maybe not even months. (2050 views)
Tasted by dannyg on 12/17/2021 & rated 95 points: 3L bottle, which was still in a perfect condition despite seeing some cracks in the wax. But the cork was in very good condition and the level was at the bottom third of the neck. The wine, to me was delicious. Was opened 6 hours with 3 hours + in the decanter. Juicy black fruits like blackberries, sweet black cherries, cinnamon, cloves, hint of leather, dark chocolate, tannins that have resolved to fine grains. The length was a nice juicy, full body that lasts 20+seconds. (1802 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 9/13/2021 & rated 93 points: 2 decades of age has added a lot to this wine. Now, you find an elegant, earthy, medium-bodied, refined wine with the smell of a high-end cigar store lined with cedar shelves along with fresh, ripe blackberry and plum aromas. Layers of soft-edged, red fruits, smoke, and cigar wrapper notes on the palate, this is drinking at a great place today. I'd opt for drinking this over the next decade to obtain maximum pleasure.
Wine tasted after the Pontet Canet 2003. The nose is aromatic and pleasant, typically Pessac with a hint of coffee, toasted very typical. The wine is elegant and pleasant to drink. Not necessarily very long or powerful, but really pleasant with notes of fruit and tobacco. For my part the bottle was at its optimum. (2385 views)

Rockss and Fruit (10/4/2004)
(Domaine de Chevalier) Classic Pessac on the nose. Scorched earth, weeds, tar, cocoa, hint of old leather, minerals, bit of wood. Dense, concentrated & ripe with earth-tinged red fruits. Very focused with dusty tannins and a long finish. Will age for a while due to its serious spine. Great showing.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
