Tasted by wiscgrad on 7/12/2023 & rated 86 points: just ok. very light fruit and high acid. on the decline. purchased at retail (289 views)
Tasted by beatles on 6/19/2023 & rated 92 points: Great showing tonight. Drinking a point, this shows deep Grenache-sweetness, sous-bois, local herbs and a fine, cool balance. If you have it, this is the moment, IMHO
#Kandestederne (791 views)
Tasted by beatles on 10/23/2022 & rated 90 points: Still drinking well, refreshing, balanced, juicy, very local - if not overly complex still has layers, nueances. Garrigue, Grenache and all the fixers albeit in a lighter style - the vintage speaks well here.
#Bagnols-en-Forêt (1065 views)
Tasted by guribh on 12/17/2021 & rated 90 points: Final bottle of a case purchase. Excellent showing. Those NBW "Cuvee Unique" bottling samples age much better than their "Selection Reflets" imported by others. Fresh, vibrant, with nice red and black cherry notes, and lengthy, slightly hot finish. (842 views)
Tasted by amongiel on 9/21/2020 & rated 90 points: Excellent. Had with Lamb chops. Definitely still has a few years left. Nice secondary notes. A bit hot. (1234 views)
Tasted by guribh on 1/9/2020 & rated 90 points: Still holding well. Dark, no evident bricking. Full, roasted (yet not jammy) notes. Bramble, decent length. Great effort. Had the St Benoit Grande Garde Frome 2004 last night and this one is far superior. 5 years easily to drink at this level. (1291 views)
Tasted by SommKennedy on 9/4/2019: P+p, really opened up after about 90 min. Dark black fruits with a slight bitter cherry on the back end, and a heavy dose of black licorice. Nose showed more raisinated black fruits and a mature earth note as well (1435 views)
Tasted by bhouk on 3/16/2019: In celebration of Ben's birthday. Such a beautiful wine -- floral nose right out of the bottle, it becomes less obvious, less fresh, with time in the decanter, replaced by dried flower and mesquite. Drinking splendidly, kirsch and leather giving way to a finish of pepper spice and brush. Just about all I would want from a wine of its type. Very impressive showing (1384 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 3/15/2018 & rated 92 points: Rather Burgundian. Elegant. Cherry fruit, garrigue. A tiny bit of leather. Long finish. In the zone. This bottle was purchased as a late release from the winery. (1707 views)
Tasted by VDLT Wine on 2/10/2018: Reticent on the nose. Could have used more air than I could offer it. Savory and herbal with impressive depth. It’s charms are subtle but persistent and undeniable. Seems I drank my trio with a span of about 5 years between them and given the progression, wish I had a couple more over the same timeframe. (1574 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 4/22/2017: From magnum. Nice, cool Grenache. Kirsch, strawberry, some tertiary marks. I don't notice the dark olive notes I usually find in Mont Olivet. Good wine, restrained. (2065 views)
Tasted by DCornutt on 10/12/2016: I don't give numerical ratings as a routine. This wine is fantastic to me. It starts quite closed and somewhat monolithic. Ripe darker fruit. With about an hour of aeration however the structure subsides and the wine blossoms. Beautiful spice. Darker fruit. A really wonderful finish. Not powerful but so sexy. I like this. It is more about finesse than power. (2435 views)
Tasted by joraesque on 7/1/2016 & rated 87 points: Musty through and through, with additional notes of ripe black cherry. Better with 2+ hours of aeration as tannins become more incisive. 14% ABV 87-88 (2353 views)
Tasted by HL Pong on 5/27/2016 & rated 79 points: Pale ruby inensity, with legs and pettillance, it looks like an old wine.

Open for an hour and half, the aroma is lack of fruit, just a hint of black cherry, and black plum, dry fig, soy sauce, liquorice and tobbacco with a very unpleasent nose of mushroom. The wine is fully developed and seems too old.

On palate, all nose aroma with bitterness and savoury flavour, it is surely better than on nose. Dry, medium + acidity, alcohol is very noticeible, (14.5%), medium+ tannin but medium body only, lack of complexity and medium + finishing, for sure, this wine is too old and over the peak. I cannot expect any development on further aging.

Better to drink now and not very enjoyable, it is just an acceptable wine with this price. Quite disappointed to me. (2079 views)
Tasted by bravo.solares on 1/23/2016 & rated 91 points: Opened bottle two hours before drinking. Leather and garrigue (initially) gave way to a lot of fruit (after one hr mark). Drank over next two hours.

Dark ruby, only slight bricking. Red and black fruit on the nose. Cherries. Blackberries. Ripe. As to non-fruit characteristics, some garrigue and turned dirt. On the palate, red and black fruit, and a ton of tannins. Way more than I expected. Very, very dry. And plenty of acidity. My one complaint - just a tad of heat from the alcohol.

If I had another bottle of this vintage, I would probably hold on to it for 2-4 more years. I suspect tannins will eventually become more tamed. And primary fruit will give way to more complex secondary characteristics. (2343 views)
Tasted by guribh on 11/26/2015 & rated 89 points: Dark with only a slight hint of bricking. Kirsch and bramble, along with some black cherries and dusty tannins. Full, slightly rustic. Old school CdP in the positive sense (no "modern" oak/vanilla sticks out). Probably at peak or nearing it. Will hold 10+ years at this plateau. (1871 views)
Tasted by beatles on 11/5/2015 & rated 89 points: Certainly mature, this is a lighter style châteauneuf, typical with garrigue galore and still some sweet Grenache-fruit. Telling of its vintage, this is quite ready – drink up (not from my cellar). (1005 views)
Tasted by Matt_Vino on 9/5/2015 & rated 89 points: Opened and let it breath in bottle for 2 hrs. This wine looks older than it is.....lots of bricking. Very dry, almost all fruit is gone. Some acidity but heat from alcohol is dominating. Some dark cherry flavors but not a very interesting wine. Very dissapointed in this wine since it was rated 92-93 pts by WS.....now I remember why I don't trust WS. Today I would score it 86 pts. Was better on 2nd day with more fruit showing.....mature raspberries, black cherries and very little heat from alcohol. I would score it 89pts on 2nd day. (712 views)
Tasted by beatles on 3/24/2015 & rated 91 points: In a very good place: garrigue, still a lot of primary fruit, good balance, quite intense and not heavy, another good example of the vintage. Will keep, but drinks very well. (at Krimimessen, Horsens, brought from my cellar) (2074 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 12/10/2014 & rated 91 points: Restrained and elegant CdP. Opens up with air. Nice influence from garrigue. Long finish. (1908 views)
Tasted by galenico on 10/29/2014: SALONE DEL GUSTO 2014; 10/26/2014-10/30/2014 (LINGOTTO FIERE TORINO): 80% Grenache. Affinato in cemento.
Finale lunghissimo, tannino maturo, fine e misurato. (2990 views)
Tasted by Johehn on 9/28/2014 & rated 86 points: Open up nicely after 1,5 hour. Elegant wine but this showed to much heat for my personal taste. (1880 views)
Tasted by Outplaying on 12/29/2013: Popped and poured a glass for Ann and myself. Very muted nose and palate so I poured the remainder in a decanter. The wine took a couple hours to open but when it did it showed subtle and pretty red fruits, slight black tea and faint spices. For ten years old, the wine does not show a lot of secondary flavors but it is also not a fruit bomb by any stretch. Very elegant and restrained. More so than any other CdP I've had. The bottle surprisingly said 15% but I detected no heat at all. My only knock, and it is a slight one, is that there is a very faint caramel cream note on the finish. (2229 views)
Tasted by bvwino on 11/26/2013 & rated 91 points: decanted for .5 hrs and drank nicely (1989 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 10/13/2013 flawed bottle: This wine showed like a young wine with malo issues. Buttered popcorn and oak. Not drinkable. Shared with 6 other guys and 1/2 a btl left. No one actually drank thier pours. Most was dumped. I'll contact vendor but doubt I'll get any satisfaction. $39 likely wasted. (2235 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
