Tasted by Geaux Tigers on 5/5/2024 & rated 95 points: From a magnum with a 3 hr double decant. Dark black with inky purple-blue tinge. Howell Mountain at its finest—evergreen forest, forest floor, charcoal, black cherry. More open than I would have thought from a magnum. (383 views)
Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 2/10/2024 & rated 96 points: Deep ruby red. Lovely nose with savory herbs, black fruits, black cherries and spices. Heavy mountain tannins (8/10) and full bodied. Well integrated palate with blueberries, bramble, cherries, a bit of woodiness and dark soil. Balanced acidity and great structure. Nice texture with a long finish. Drink till 2042. (1217 views)
Tasted by BigBoy_Sonoma on 12/17/2023 & rated 97 points: Black fruit, blue fruit, herbal notes, currant, chocolate, cocoa, tobacco, earthy notes. A (1425 views)
Tasted by Rasmussenbrent on 12/5/2023 & rated 97 points: This bottle is drinking amazing right now. The biggest best wine i have had in a long time!! (1444 views)
Tasted by sdsull on 7/10/2023 & rated 96 points: OPEN FOR BUSINESS! (2321 views)
Tasted by jviz on 8/24/2022 & rated 95 points: Tasted at the winery. Slow ox in bottle for a few hours. Still surprisingly structured given the bottle age, with notes of blackcurrant, hints of eucalyptus, and not so subtle black tea leaves, which for me might be the signature of Howell mountain? In any case it was really delicious and the 16 is just on its heels. (3987 views)
Tasted by Wino from Michigan on 4/17/2022 & rated 94 points: Decanted 2.5 hours - amazing with grilled ribeye (3746 views)
Tasted by WineKnut on 4/1/2022 & rated 85 points: Well, if I could offer only one thing about this wine... It would be that it is not worth the money.

Pretty disappointed.

On to the more technical. After 3 hours of air, the nose offers mocha, vanilla, tobacco, heat, black fruit, mushroom and some herbal notes. Palate is medium body and lacking balance. It's dry and angular. So tannic. Finish makes me want to brush my teeth.

Blech! (3841 views)
Tasted by Jake112380 on 3/31/2022 & rated 92 points: Smooth and well integrated with polished tannins. Cassis, a bit of leather and tobacco, blackberry. Drinking well now but will hold for several years. (3488 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 3/9/2022: Return to Napa; 3/6/2022-3/13/2022 (Wineries and various restaurants): Much more structure (aka tannin) than the 2016 Napa Valley we had right before. It's blackberry and darker and there's a depth here that just keeps going. Feels like this wine could live forever. Very nice. Glad to see we have some in the cellar. (4231 views)
Tasted by Bcostabile20 on 2/14/2022 & rated 91 points: Opened up after about an hour and was amazing. Could still use a little more age. Wish I had another bottle. Great valentines wine to accompany the surf and turf with the love of my life! Dark fruits, tabacco, oak, black pepper (2434 views)
Tasted by PMJak11 on 2/3/2022 & rated 96 points: Simply awesome!! 45+ minute decant. Dark red color. Drinking older than I would have expected. Refined with a lovely texture. Cassis, dark fruit, pencil shavings, and minerality. Long finish. (2235 views)
Tasted by redmd2203 on 1/29/2022 & rated 91 points: Some tannins. Delicious after decanting for 2 hours.
Should still improve. (2018 views)
Tasted by DougSamuel on 12/25/2021 & rated 95 points: Limited notes as we had it along with a lamborn cab on Christmas day. We decanted for 6 hours at cellar temp. This wine was darker more bass note, compared to the lamborn (2016). Really excellent wine. (2188 views)
Tasted by boozebythecreek on 11/25/2021: Double decanted for about 2 hours. In hindsight, wish I had given it slightly more time. As the person I was drinking with it said, this is somewhere in between blowing off the baby fat primary flavors and getting into its next phase. Developed some nice dark and red fruit flavor on the palate, but by no means is this a fruit bomb. Dusty tannins that are still very present. Very good but I won't even dream of opening my other bottle for another 10 years. (2499 views)
Tasted by davidandrose on 7/31/2021 & rated 91 points: Right out of the bottle this was shallow, with fine-grained, Dusty tannins making the wine extremely dry across the palate.

After 2 1/2 hours in the decanter this has begun begun to integrate and open, but isn’t as dark or rich as other vintages of the Howell Mountain release. Will update if more decant time adds weight and body
Four hours after the counting wine is largely unchanged from prior comments, though bing cherry and a red fruits are becoming more apparent on me profile. (2919 views)
Tasted by paul.guerrero.co on 6/20/2021 & rated 94 points: Showed very well w classic Dunn boldness, but tapered off quickly through the evening. The 2012s are just not as age worthy so recommend drinking your 2012s now and 1 hour decant max. (2788 views)
Tasted by fdub on 5/30/2021 & rated 95 points: Still super young but so expressive on opening. Showing a lot of herbal and menthol notes. Some bell pepper to match the dark fruit profile. (2874 views)
Tasted by WineCPA on 4/11/2021 & rated 96 points: This got even better on day two. Gobs of black and red fruits. The finish gets even better with air. Leather and graphite on the finish. Long finish. Great nose that mimics the finish. (2973 views)
Tasted by beatles on 3/9/2021 & rated 91 points: Seems to be in an middle stage right now - has warmth, but there is character also.

Tasted by HorstPeak on 1/15/2021 & rated 94 points: Anniversary wine too, happy 29th! Decant about 90 minutes, black fruit on the nose, med to full body, had earth tone on taste with black fruit, tannins water still in the finish which lasted for +30 seconds (2961 views)
Tasted by rlove on 11/15/2020 & rated 93 points: Twenty twelve is a beautiful Dunn Howell Mountain with a mountain nose of blackberry, blueberry, autumn leaves, and cedar. Medium-full in weight, vibrant and fresh, this is absolutely killer tonight but with years ahead. Quite savory and nuanced for the vintage. Drink now through 2040. (3132 views)
Tasted by davidandrose on 11/7/2020: Notes follow a 2 Hr decant, alongside a custom blended bottle from Mike Dunn, composed of the 2012 Napa and Howell Mtn wines. (2823 views)
Tasted by GQG on 10/6/2020 & rated 95 points: A garnet red wine with visible extract (not sediment) in the glass upon opening, the first sip demands attention as a big, mouth-filling wine. It needed a 1 hour decant and some swirling in the glass to settle in, whereupon the attack and mid-palate of energy and dark red fruit were drumming out a one-two beat in perfect synchronization followed by the essential high-hat cymbal finish. It's big, complex, and delicious; it's more intellectual than hedonistic. No yelling for more cowbell here. (3398 views)
Tasted by kfran24 on 6/14/2020 & rated 95 points: I think it’s great. Unique. I’ve had a bottle of 2005 Dunn Howell Mountain and was not a fan. It’s certainly possible the bottle was flawed. This 2012 is a winner. I like the complexity combined with low alcohol. (3376 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
