Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88.4 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 26 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by MSheridan on 11/24/2023 & rated 88 points: easy drinking claret. Crisp & fresh with plum & cherry notes dominating the fruit profile, a touch or darker fruits emerge with coaxing. Fairly high acidity makes this a better wine to drink with food than to quaff solo but it's still pretty drinkable on its own.
There isn't really enough depth of fruit to make it a keeper but some of the more prestigeous 2013 wines might prove those of us saying they're only for drinking in the short term wrong. (265 views)
Tasted by mtgu on 8/7/2023 & rated 89 points: Mature Bordeau. Medium body, still fresh fruit, oak/vanilla as nice muted spice in background.
Quaffable! (449 views)
Tasted by Gustavostrit on 3/13/2022 & rated 92 points: Álcool alto, acidez média alta, dulçor baixo, corpo médio.
No nariz cereja, figo, licor de cassis, aroma de floresta. Na boca ameixa. (1074 views)
Tasted by MSheridan on 2/15/2022 & rated 90 points: PnP - drinking very well. Very approachable, with light notes of leather and tobacco, with bramble, plum and a touch of cassis fruit. While it has the vintage trait of lacking depth of fruit, there's a nice freshness to the wine that makes for good drinking now and should drink well for the next 5 years without the fruit fading. (1044 views)
Tasted by DanielOsman on 1/8/2021 & rated 88 points: Same a blast note, though this one has left me with a headache the mornings after both evenings drunk, or maybe that's my one year old not sleeping! (1758 views)
Tasted by Life At Your Leisure 🍷 on 1/1/2021 & rated 90 points: Tasted blind. Very densely concentrated and a pure delight with notes of smoke, charcoal, and leather surrounding the black currants and cassis fruit. Quite impressive for the vintage. Drink now until 2033. 90+ (1543 views)
Tasted by MSheridan on 11/12/2020 & rated 90 points: Possibly a little bit generous scoring for this very approachable wine but was enjoyable on the night.
Fresh mineral charcter, slightly lighter fruit than in other vintages but makes for good drinking right now. Cherry and plum fruit and pencil lead on the palate.
Feels it has credentials to still keep for another 5y or so but might be worth keeping an eye on it to watch that the fruit isnt fading if you are planning to cellar. (1496 views)
Tasted by MSheridan on 4/18/2020 & rated 89 points: nice fresh bdx, ideal for drinking in it's youth.
I normally like to wait for some tertiary characteristics in my bdx but this vintage is so fresh and on the lighter side of the spectrum that it's likely to be best consumed in earlier years. It'll last a good few years yet though so no rush to consume these immediately (1342 views)
Tasted by Steffen 1978 on 3/28/2020 & rated 90 points: Schöne Frucht, Johannisbeere, Brombeeren. Leicht grüne Noten. Holz und etwas Tabak aber im Vordergrund. Tanine und Säure Mittel bis hoch, Alkohol Mittel. (1280 views)
Tasted by DanielOsman on 2/23/2020 & rated 88 points: A light bdx, purple garnet, nose of cherries, on the palate is sour red cherry, wookd/oak, and a hint of mint. Light/medium body, medium tannin and acidity. Drink now and next couple of years (849 views)
Tasted by MSheridan on 11/28/2019 & rated 88 points: drinking well "young".
A slightly lighter style which I have found to be the case for 13 vintage bdx.
will it age well? another few years may see development but perhaps these 2013 wines are best enjoyed for their fruit. (947 views)
Tasted by Orange Tsian on 11/22/2019 & rated 87 points: 87/100 (342 views)
Tasted by exonian on 9/22/2019 & rated 87 points: Long tears stain the glass , with a little fading at the rim. The nose is a muted medium of plums, vanilla and cherries, chocolate menthol, spicy almond, and delicate white flowers. Medium bodied, with high acidity, the palate shows flavours of sour plums, and currants with a dry spicy finish. Light and acidic, this wine does the job with food. Lacks sufficient fruit for long aging. In the past would have been classed as " a luncheon claret " - a lovely expression conjuring up images of leathery gentlemen's clubs in London's Pall Mall! At £13 ( $15 ) from German discount retailer Lidl , this represented exceptional value. (822 views)
Tasted by Smahlatz on 7/12/2019 & rated 87 points: Mix ruby colour, smells like a low key Bordeaux vintage with mineral notes trumping fruit. Palate shows core of red fruits, raspberry that I find in Bordeaux. Finish is ok, but the wine trends to lack depth overall, still very pleasant. Food not hold up well overnight, showing thin and lacking substance on day 2. Day 3 and 4 however showed definite improvement, with the palate filling out again. (889 views)
Tasted by tversky on 4/9/2019 & rated 89 points: Charming and correct left bank claret from a minor vintage; lowish concentration with cool, cedary aromatic profile. (950 views)
Tasted by xzwine on 1/23/2018: Mineral, spice shadowed over fruit. Insufficient body to host the high acidity. Mediocre old world. (1907 views)

(2411 views)
Tasted by broadband013 on 11/3/2016 & rated 87 points: Pas terrible (2191 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 4/23/2014 & rated 87 points: Blending 66% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Cabernet Franc, the wine offers hints of oak, cedar and cassis. Medium bodied with bright, sweet character, it ends with a tart, crisp and austere finish. 87-88 Pts (5080 views)
Tasted by Yagil on 4/3/2014 & rated 87 points: nice fruity aroma, med balance & quality, below expectations 86-88 (1939 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Médoc

Appellation Webpage (Conseil des Vins du Médoc)

The land with the Médoc appellation links three kinds of Médoc terroirs: Garonne gravel, Pyrenees gravel and soils of clayey limestone. Taking account of the huge area the appellation covers, these terroirs are extremely varied in character. Thanks to this variety of terroirs, the infinite palette of the wines with the Médoc appellation has distinction, roundness and a balanced personality. They may be full bodied with a fine ruby red colour. They should be kept a long time for their many nuances to develop. Others are elegant, subtle, with a fine bouquet, ready to be drunk younger, though this in no way reflects on their exemplary finesse. In order to have the right to the Médoc appellation of controlled origin, red wines must: - come from the peninsula bounded on the east by the Garonne and the Gironde, on the south by Blanquefort Brook, on the west by the Atlantic Ocean but excluding the communes of Carcans and Hourtin, Brach, Salaunes, Lacanau, Le Temple, Le Porge and "land of recent alluvium and sand lying on impermeable subsoils", - satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (170 grammes - 6 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°) base yield (50 hectolitres per hectare).

Vins de Bordeaux:
Grape Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Merlot
Soil: Alluvial terraces of gravel deposits, light, good for Cabernet, and deep and clay-like, good for Merlot
Surface Area: 5,522 ha
