Community Tasting Notes (average 93.8 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 25 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by JohnnyShiraz on 12/15/2019 & rated 94 points: 15.2% ABV, smooth tannins, at it peak (1471 views)
Tasted by wardamnwine on 9/25/2019: Not rating this bc it’s not my jam anymore, tons of fruit and little interest. (1313 views)
Tasted by rharl on 7/4/2019 & rated 94 points: Amazing ... coravin on first night blew me away, rest of bottle on second was unbelievable. (1453 views)
Tasted by csimm on 4/5/2019 & rated 92 points: Blackberry, chocolate, railroad tie, and wet black soil. It’s a good Cali Syrah that delivers round flavor, medium weight, and a bit of a thick delivery. No hard edges; fairly plush, but exhibits a decent grip to house the ripe fruit. It has lost a bit of steam since having it back in 2017.

Drink now and over the next few years. (3525 views)
Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 11/9/2018 & rated 94 points: Stand with my prior assumption that this would be interesting in a few years, definitely drinking a lot better right now. Dark purplish red. Intense and jammy nose with layers of bacon, purple flowers, plums and white pepper. A touch of heat on the palate with medium tannins (6.5/10) and medium plus body. Rich mix of dark berries and caramel on the palate. Long and lingering finish. Drink till 2027. (1628 views)
Tasted by wine4lux on 12/11/2017 & rated 94 points: Had with dinner at a friend's house, served with a bourbon-glazed pork roast; the wine had sufficient power (fruit, tannin, finish) to go toe-to-toe with a very flavorful dinner; didn't overpower, fight or back away. A very approachable and smooth syrah. (902 views)
Tasted by rharl on 10/14/2017 & rated 95 points: Wow, very rich. Had an edge after an hour open in the bottle, then decanted and softened up nicely. Deep dark flavors - hold last bottle for at least a year to see what happens... (1267 views)
Tasted by csimm on 6/25/2017 & rated 95 points: Same as previous notes. This was drinking very well about 30 minutes after PnP. Gained some really nice depth in the glass with some swirling. Dark blackberry, huckleberry, boysenberry, black hot road tar, camphor, vanilla bean, and hints of scortched earth and clove. A faint, trailing flavor of singed eucalyptus added interest.

I bumped this up a point to 95, as it was really showing well tonight after a total of two hours of consumption. Good to open now, but has plenty of drive to keep it intact for a number of years to come. I'll hold another 8-12 months for my next bottle, but drinking fine now for those who want to indulge. 94-95+ points this go-around. (2404 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 5/26/2017 & rated 90 points: Intimate Dinner Series (Carlucci's, Downers Grove): Courtesy of R&D. Vanilla, blue fruit, pepper and brown sugar aromas. Firm tannins with a sweet edge. Syrupy dark fruit and vanilla with a long finish. (1534 views)
Tasted by jeginmt on 5/25/2017 & rated 96 points: This wine is terrific. Each bottle confirms my previous tasting notes. Rich, full bodied, exceptional structure. Delicious. (1048 views)
Tasted by jeginmt on 1/29/2017 & rated 96 points: As described in my previous tasting notes last summer, this is an outstanding Syrah. Among the best I have tasted. Rich and luscious. A rare treat. (1028 views)
Tasted by csimm on 11/28/2016 & rated 94 points: Same as my notes 8 months ago. Developed some really nice dark chocolate, earth, black olive, and deep black raspberry notes to frame out the core blackberry fruit flavors.

Decanted for a total of three hours, which allowed it to deepen a bit. Will continue to improve. Drinking beautifully now, but I'll plan to hold my next bottle for another 8-12+ months.

94++ points. (2885 views)
Tasted by danielbleier on 11/24/2016 & rated 94 points: consistent with notes of 3/3/2016 (868 views)
Tasted by jeginmt on 6/11/2016 & rated 96 points: Dark purple, full bodied, rich, lush fruit, rounded tannins, delicious. This is an outstanding Syrah in every respect. (1315 views)
Tasted by mpsocal on 3/25/2016 & rated 96 points: This is an outstanding wine. It's big and rich with some nice rounded tannins. Great structure and balance too. This is the best Lewis wine I've ever had and is up there as one of the best wines I've ever had. (1403 views)
Tasted by csimm on 3/12/2016 & rated 94 points: Totally agree with DANIELBLEIER in that this wine is indeed super rich and lush (in the best of ways). Exactly what I would expect from a Lewis Syrah from an overly-giving vintage like 2012. PnP with specific notes of ripe black and blue berry fruit, blackberry liqueur, dark chocolate, vanilla bean, fresh road tar, and some earth and spice.

A totally sexy and alluring mouthfeel, with an unctuous full-bodied style that completely coats the palate. Pushes the limits on ripeness, but has the layered complexity to keep it from getting muddled. The tannin management is noteworthy here, with no harsh edges. Maintains a structural integrity that shows quality winemaking; it certainly puts lavish fruit and quality cooperage center stage, yet stays in perfect check. 94 points on the initial PnP.

Although it didn't seem to need it, I decided to decant for an hour or so to see where it would go. Nothing much changed after a total of 2+ hours of air. Threw off quite a bit of sediment in the end, which detracted a bit on the final sips, but overall a very nice performance. A solid 94 points.

Drink now and over the next 6-8 years. (2524 views)
Tasted by danielbleier on 3/3/2016 & rated 94 points: Lush and full bodied - supper rich blackberry, tar, and herb flavors. Not overripe - but certainly a cocktail wine, no idea what food could stand up to this monster. Wish I had a case more. (1240 views)
Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 9/18/2015 & rated 90 points: S&E Wine Society - New World Reds 95+ Rating (S&E): Blind Tasting MOT=90
Color: Purpleish red
Nose: Smoky and sweet cherries
Palate: Very very very very extracted, solid tannins, knew it was a napa syrah straight away.
Opinion: would be very interesting in a few years (1856 views)
Tasted by StageOneRacing on 8/24/2015 & rated 95 points: Smooth, rich and dense. Very dark color, flavors of blackberry, anise, game meat, and cola. Excellent right after it's popped but gets smoother with some air time. Fantastic! (1355 views)
Tasted by Thepattees on 7/2/2015 & rated 92 points: Still on the young side, but it's very good. (1204 views)
Tasted by laprodoc on 9/9/2014 & rated 94 points: Lovely wine. Recommend ribs with this1 (1966 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
