| Community Tasting Notes (average 93.2 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 43 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by Ernestas on 1/18/2024 & rated 95 points: Finally my first Rougeard, by many wine lovers claimed as epitome of Chenin perfection. Comes from 1.5 ha 100+ year old vines, minimal intervention winemaking, 24 months in barrels, 20% new, bottled unfiltered. Deep golden. Intense clean and multilayered aroma of honeyed apple, flint, stone, acacia, smoke, ripe pears, almonds, pine resin. Full body, concentrated & weighty texture symbiotically coherent with taut and tense high juicy acidity, deep flavours, mineral saline and smoky touches, everlasting finish. (327 views) | | Tasted by MC2 Wines on 3/14/2023: Wine Workshop: Focus on Clos Rougeard (Cafe Evergreen): Not quite what I was expecting as I think of 2011 as a banner year for whites and more of the acid and fresh style. This was ginger and lemon but then almost this hint of sourness and much more full-bodied than you might expect for the year. Still a really interesting and more intellectual style of wine that I enjoyed. (1215 views) | | Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 5/12/2022: Smells of chamomile tea, baked apple and flinty mineral. It has a waxy feel in the mouth and there’s good density and complexity. Structural elements are relaxed yet still support. It feels like it is entering a very drinkable stage of its long evolution. (1563 views) | | Tasted by swfc on 5/12/2022 & rated 88 points: Hmm... Deep golden hue. Certainly evolved. Not oxidised, but certainly much more developed than expected Might be a bad bottle, but this was not a great showing. (1291 views) | | Tasted by chatters on 4/29/2022: En-Primeur campaign for the 2021 vintage; 4/25/2022-4/29/2022 (Bordeaux): Citrus, slight herbaceousness, just beginning to show some tertiary notes. Works well with the tataki beef but it’s a bit sharp by itself. Not very impressed by this offering – I would have preferred, at about a quarter of the cost, the Domaine des sables verts les roueres 2020 that I had at Vins Urbains earlier. (2781 views) | | Tasted by S1 on 11/6/2021: Chas Offlineorama VI, Another embarrassment of riches; 11/3/2021-11/7/2021 (Various locations): Chervil, iodine, integrated oak, quince fruit with a little peel, bright tangerine, bees wax with a whiff of kerosene in the finish. People who say that food and wine pairings don’t matter have obviously never had a pairing like this one. The wine combined with chef’s poached pear salad with arugula, blue cheese mousse, rabbit confit and toasted pepitas is on my top five list of all time mouthfuls. Unbelievable. (2060 views) | | Tasted by MC2 Wines on 11/6/2021: Charleston VI; 11/3/2021-11/7/2021 (Charleston, SC (various locations)): A favorite producer for me although the wine has gotten a lot pricier and a lot harder to find so we don't have it that often. This was a bit tart and sharp on the heels of the rose champagne, but a very nice wine nonetheless. (1691 views) | | Tasted by LB88 on 11/5/2021 & rated 92 points: This was more closed compared to the 2008 a few weeks ago. But had a nice dense palate of stone fruits apricots, less orange peels but rich and full. Definitely cellar more years before drinking or prep earlier. (1049 views) | | Tasted by aquacongas on 10/23/2021 & rated 93 points: not blind, decanted for 1 hour, drank over 2 hours I had this wine better. A bit too matured for his age. Always when I drink CR I think it could be Burgundy but there is something different in nose and palate but precise and powerful at the end. Drink it now. 93 (1270 views) | | Tasted by kp52 on 4/15/2021 & rated 93 points: Never been wowed by a brézé but this is very convincing. Rather deep yellow color but on the nose, you have pears, preserved lemons, bees wax, all jumping out of the glass, already on pnp. Quite full bodied and rich, but lifted up by a perfectly balanced streak of mineral acidity. No hint of age. Beautiful. (1436 views) | | Tasted by burgburgburg on 1/12/2021 & rated 92 points: A good Breze on the subtle and feminie side. Extremely pure and structural. Give it a few more years.
(1821 views) | | Tasted by xwine on 9/16/2020: Off the Passionfish list. After trying the red off the list in February, I was happy to see they had the white available on this visit. This was full and fleshy, but at the same time lithe and supple with a waxy note. A very nice Chenin, it was hard to keep my nose out of the glass -- flowery and graceful aromas. Excellent! (1500 views) | | Tasted by JOsgood on 7/17/2020 & rated 96 points: Drinking wonderfully. Huge nose. Rich and coating on the palate. Has aged very well. A WOW wine. (1730 views) | | Tasted by alanr on 3/14/2020 & rated 93 points: Off the Passionfish list, drank the 13 Saumur rouge the night before, this is our last dinner before heading home from anniversary trip, anticipating the Covid shutdown. The Breze is even more unusual to find, so not much question of drinking this tonight.
Lovely nose, mineral waxy lanolin fruit, elegant refined palate, medium intensity, waxy, mineral, some lightly savory notes, very refined and elegantly complex, nice hints of saline umami creep in on finish. Not the intensity of, say, 2010, but so elegant and beautiful. (1592 views) | | Tasted by Vini Ciclismo on 12/7/2019 & rated 94 points: Gold colour. Crushed herb, melons, honey. Bright, intense attack, almost spritzy. Citrus and tropical fruits, honey, orange blossom. A hint of crushed herb spice. Seamless across the middle and a refined silky finish. A distinctive wine. (1680 views) | | Tasted by collin on 10/27/2019: Amazing. My first of this vintage, but the few times I've had other vintages, I've thought, "super interesting, singular, and impossible to place into context." This was just a perfect, super interesting, singular version of Saumur Chenin Blanc that hit all the right notes. (1572 views) | | Tasted by Hanibal on 9/21/2019 & rated 75 points: not clean (1823 views) | | Tasted by frenchiecagowine on 4/12/2019 & rated 95 points: A stunner. Last time I tasted Clos Rougeard was 20 years ago, and now I remember why it was a revelation back then. This is the best Chenin Blanc I've had in 20 years. Balanced and impressively long. (1943 views) | | Tasted by Goldstone on 2/18/2019 & rated 92 points: La Nuit des Garcons (Grill Restaurant, Hong Kong Country Club, Hong Kong): Somewhat over-hyped early in the dinner by its somewhat over-enthusiastic promoter (who shall remain nameless ha ha..) but this was a revelation! WOW....crystal sharp...so clean and crisp. Bone dry....like a finely cut diamond. Chenin Blanc....very "off piste" but taken to another level by a great winemaker. Moderate length on the finish was the only slight disappointment. Thanks Eric! (2160 views) | | Tasted by fred o. on 10/23/2018: off list at restaurant. Light straw golden color. Nose complex, mint, light florals and lanolin. Palate incredible, great complexity, lightly minty, dry and good acidity, light lemony; with time white peach flavors. Continues to unfurl over the course of dinner. Pristine bottle and can only get better with time. one of my wines of the year. 96 pts (1916 views) | | Tasted by FYC on 9/21/2018: Served double blind at a burgundy event (by Fu of course). I picked up some mild oxidative notes so didn’t return to it. Tied with 1999 Arnaud Ente Gouttes D’or for last place with zero votes. (2182 views) | | Tasted by aquacongas on 5/3/2018 & rated 95 points: Get served blindly. I was in Burgundy. Very fresh and crispy. Spicy, floral and a touch of macadamia nuts. You feel the concentration but in an elegant way. Never overwhelming or annoying. Very difficult to guess the age. Great saline finish. Not so strong as 2010 and other bottles from 11. But we will see what happens in the future. 95+ (2634 views) | | Tasted by aquacongas on 3/31/2018 & rated 97 points: A perfect bottle again, Burgundy style, lightly oxidative, great salinity, phantastic concentration, after two hours in the decanter balanced and despite 12,5% very dense and powerful. I love it. my freind Thomas who got it blind was more than impressed. Foe me 97, for him at least 98 (2736 views) | | Only displaying the 25 most recent notes - click to see all notes for this wine... |
