Community Tasting Notes (average 89.9 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 9 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by adnorthup on 10/19/2021: Purchased at Moreson in South Africa in 2015 and subsequently forgotten about, a cold Fall evening and pizza seemed like a good chance to open it. 15 minutes after popping the cork, this is loaded up with blueberry, sour cherry and earth. Fruit has slowly started to turn tertiary but the acid is still hanging strong. A really nice true version of pinotage, and fun to see a bottle like this age gracefully. (317 views)
Tasted by TannicBeast on 2/6/2021 & rated 91 points: Pleased to be trying this again. Med (+) ruby. Med (+) aromas of black fruit, smoky, roasted peppers, dried herbs, chocolate and spice. Subtle, elegant French oak. Dry, but fruit-forward. Med acidity, med., resolved tannins. The alcohol is high at 14.5% but is perceived more at med (+). Full-bodied, with med (+) intensity and length. Smooth, creamy mouthfeel, with a slight bitterness on the finish. Still one of the best, cleanest Pinotages I have ever had. Close to its peak, but it should show well for a couple more years.  Tasted by danershi@gmail.com on 5/30/2020 & rated 89 points: There are earth notes in the wine, but the leading flavor is that of juicy black cherry and plum. There are also graphite notes. It’s really a sipping delight. Without a doubt, it is the best Pinotage we’ve had. (373 views)
Tasted by TannicBeast on 9/25/2019 & rated 90 points: Tasted blind. Medium (+) ruby. The nose is medium in intensity, a little closed, still developing, with ripe red fruit, black fruit, cured meat and licorice. Some French oak but fairly neutral. Dry, but with plenty of sweet fruit. Med acidity, med tannins. The alcohol is high at 14.5% but is perceived more at med (+). Called it a New World, moderate climate Shiraz. Actually one of the best, cleanest Pinotages I have ever had. It will show well for a couple more years. (479 views)
Tasted by franzem on 11/7/2015 & rated 85 points: Strong pinot noir notes, robust; no coffee / chocolate: food thing! (1766 views)

Stellenbosch Wine Routes

Stellenbosch

The historical town of Stellenbosch boasts a winemaking tradition which stretches back to the end of the 17th-century.

Stellenbosch is the educational and research centre of the winelands. Stellenbosch University is the only one in South Africa with a viticultural and oenological department, and many of the country's most successful winemakers studied there. The Nietvoorbij Institute of Viticulture and Oenology is also in Stellenbosch and this organisation has one of the most modern experimental wineries in the world and, at its experimental farms (situated in several wine growing districts), important research into new varietals, clones and rootstocks is undertaken.

The mountainous terrain, good rainfall, deep well-drained soils and diversity of terroirs make this a sought-after viticultural area. The rapidly increasing number of wine estates includes some of the most famous names in Cape wine. The district, with its mix of historic estates and contemporary wineries, produces excellent examples of almost all the noble grape varieties.

The intensively farmed Stellenbosch district has been divided up into several smaller viticultural pockets including Jonkershoek Valley, Papegaaiberg, Simonsberg-Stellenbosch, Bottelary, Devon Valley and Banghoek.
