Tasted by fizz on 3/29/2024: 375ml bottle.
PnP.
Black berries, plum, dark chocolate, sweet spice, cedar. Still youthful! Medium bodied, with plenty left in the tank for years of development. (613 views)
Tasted by Oliverl1 on 12/31/2023 & rated 92 points: Still too young! Typical characteristics of the 2005 vintage. Backwards and tannic! Despite being 18 years old, it seems like it is only a few years old! Decanted for 12 hours. I think it still needs 5-10 years further aging to be at its plateau.

Anticipated maturity 2026 to 2032. (1107 views)
Tasted by WindFlyer on 12/16/2023 & rated 95 points: [served blind. my guess was mid-aughts for vintage; as for AOC, i suspected right bank as the Merlot was very present].

deep ruby and garnet rim in the glass. complex and perfumed in the nose: dried rose, cedar shavings, and tobacco waft thru the aromas of macerated cassis and blueberry. juicy, fleshy and round in mouth, the fruit has a supple, silky texture against the very polished tannins. earthy, spice, and dark cocoa notes grow in the mid palate. long, nuanced persistence.

well-developed and likely at peak with another handful of years of enjoyment ahead.

13.5% AbV; equal shares of CS and Merlot (48%), with the rest (4%) PV (987 views)
Tasted by PBC-PZ Wine on 10/6/2023: Delicious!! (1557 views)
Tasted by andreel on 6/10/2023 & rated 93 points: Very suave and silky, tannins still there but nicely integrated with fruit, spreads across the palate and very long. Tertiary notes coming through but plenty of time left. Great to drink now. (2324 views)
Tasted by Shanta on 1/29/2023: A superb bottle in great condition, compared to an earlier tasting note 29 Sept '19. On this occasion the wine was darker, denser, richer. A deep, engaging nose, seamless palate and long finish. Wonderful expression of a dry, savoury wine full of elegant spice and floral lift, at the prefect palate weight of 13.5% abv. (2979 views)
Tasted by P_Hansen on 1/7/2023 & rated 93 points: The wine looks ruby colored with browny edges. It still has some fruity notes, but age has made it more smooth. The wine is full bodied with a medium acidity and a hint of oak. There is some heavy sediment in the bottle. (2737 views)
Tasted by The Wine Monkeys on 12/26/2022 & rated 93 points: First experienced this wine a year ago in Switzerland. We loved it then and it’s still amazing today. Tobacco, spice, cedar, dark fruit, wonderfully integrated and balanced. (2824 views)
Tasted by Labrador on 11/27/2022 & rated 85 points: Perhaps it was due to the fact that we PNPed, but this was not the same Pavillon Rouge that I have enjoyed in the past. It might also be that the wine (which has been sitting in the same spot since it arrived in 2008) has shut down. It was not disjointed or lacking balance or unpleasant, but it was just not showing its "stuff." I look forward to my remaining bottles. (2553 views)
Tasted by Oliverl1 on 8/26/2022 & rated 91 points: Still On the young side. Decanted 7 hours! An all-round refined Margaux. Fabulous nose! Would like to re-visit in 5-10 years time. Not sure about the other reviews… this is just not ready. (2793 views)
Tasted by 559Cheers on 8/24/2022 & rated 92 points: Nice Bordeaux perhaps little more time in bottle. Probably needs about three or four days being open to blossom at this stage. At a secondary life point. Open two nights, bottle almost a dead soldier. A vieux soldat.
*3rd night, incense perfumes the nose and briefly the palette. Rescored. (2118 views)
Tasted by Renevin on 6/29/2022 & rated 92 points: Nez fumée, champignons, encre. Bonne présence tanique en bouche mais pas agressifs. Corsé, finale sur le cuir. Apparaît encore jeune. À conserver plusieurs années encore (2331 views)
Tasted by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy on 6/21/2022 & rated 92 points: Popped and poured, and drank over 2 hours at a wine bar. Very well stored bottle, and very much still alive (even primal). 2005 Bordeaux has shown itself to have produced seemingly everlasting wines. (2293 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 11/30/2021 & rated 93 points: A birthday celebration at Wimborne. Drank over 2+ hours in Grassl 1855.
Popped and poured. So took quite a bit of air to get going.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity wiith aromas of cedarwood, fragrnt spice, deep red plums. Earthiness with more air. Developing.
On the palate, dry, juicy high acidity, medium+ alcohol (13.5%), fine silky high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of cedarwood, nicely grilled belle pepper, fine spice, deep red plums, deep red cherries. Long spiced finish.
Very good quality. A Margaux of refinement rather than oomph. Still a good long life ahead in this strong vintage. (3484 views)
Tasted by slaughterer on 11/14/2021 & rated 92 points: A little brittle and spindly, but definitely in its window. With thyme on the nose, and a lithe palate of strawberry, cherry, plums, raspberry, vanilla and chocolate. Fairly long licorice ending. (2731 views)
Tasted by mrgarreth on 8/4/2021 & rated 93 points: The nose jumps out of the glass with raspberry, cherry, plum, some blackcurrant, vanilla, cedar, dark chocolate, pencil lead, liquorice, old leather, and some herb (is it thyme?). Ripe, taught tannins and a long finish. There is some good concentration and it will be interesting to see how this develops. (3266 views)
Tasted by CellarBord on 6/30/2021 & rated 92 points: At our Commanderie dinner of Second Wines(1995 & 2005 Pavillon Rouge, 2005 Bahans Haut Brion, 2009 Croix de Beaucaillou and 2009 Reserve de la Comtesse).

Early drinking part of the drinking range. Lots of potential and depth. Should be better in 4-5 years. Drink 2025-33. (3042 views)
Tasted by curtr on 6/30/2021 & rated 92 points: Early drinking part of the drinking range. Lots of potential and depth. Should be better in 4-5 years. Drink 2025-33. (3272 views)
Tasted by Skibank114 on 6/30/2021 & rated 95 points: Just outstanding! This bottle has been in the cellar for several years waiting for my retirement. Very nice from the nose with subtle fruit, pencil shavings, and bit of cedar through the full finish. Completely integrated. Garnet color and a silky texture to the experience. Drinking well now for sure, will probably integrate the tannins a bit more, but not sure it will improve much above where it sits today. I should have bought a couple bottles when I had the chance at a lower price point. Even at current price point - this is worth the price. Enjoy! (2255 views)
Tasted by the player on 4/9/2021: Did not decant properly so will not rate. Only comment from drinking a few 2005s lately is that the vintage seems to have closed recently so I will revisit in a couple of year my 2005 bottles. (2832 views)
Tasted by tmagsmaken on 3/13/2021 & rated 93 points: Top Bordeaux 2nd Wines with Jane Anson (Virtual 67 Pall Mall - replay): Expressive nose with cassis, pencil shavings, cedar and tobacco notes that expand over time. Silky but restraint, tannins almost integrated. Nice juicy finish. Ready but can be kept for a decade. Expensive but good (2613 views)
Tasted by Orange Tsian on 2/7/2021 & rated 92 points: Wine for Birthday!
92/100 (1363 views)
Tasted by enovino on 2/7/2021 & rated 97 points: Drank one bottle in 2 sittings, 6 months apart in 2020.

Why you may ask?

Because upon first tap with Coravin it was very restrained, seeming like it was nowhere ready to drink, differing from the glowing reports from our CT peers. So I let it rest some more and came back to it 6 months later, with a quick tap and boy did it EVOLVE! First sip was like the Hallelujah chorus! Majestic, radiant and joyful.

Beautiful opaque rich red garnet color with waves of sweet cassis fruit on the nose. Palate had perfect weight mid to full bodied with plush rich cabernet driven flavours that matches the nose precisely, delivering great satisfaction with every elegant juicy sip. Tannins are still present but playing a supporting role. Had no problem pulling the still supple cork.

Uh-mazing with pan seared Prime aged NY Strip Steak.

Thrilled to have 2 more bottles. Outstanding! (2580 views)
Tasted by CJet on 12/12/2020 & rated 96 points: Really enjoyed this one. Decanted 3 hours. Beautiful nose with notes of cedar and spice. Medium bodied, well balanced, and a substantial finish. Drinking really well right now. (2852 views)
Tasted by Tuskeny Raider on 10/23/2020 & rated 95 points: Garnet in color gave some indication that this has years left and it really does. nose was good but it was the strength and finish this has on the palate that stood out. Tannins are just starting to integrate and the finish went on. Wish I had more. (2525 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Margaux

Read more about Margaux and its wines As with a large part of the Bordeaux vineyards, vines first appeared in Margaux during the Gallo-Roman period.
In 1705 a text mentions Château Margaux . But we have to wait for the end of the eighteenth century and the coming of the earliest techniques in aging for the concept of wines of high quality to develop. The confirmation of this was the famous 1855 classification which recognized 21 Crus Classés in the Margaux appellation. One hundred years later, the Viticultural Federation and the Margaux appellation of controlled origin were born. The appellation, which stretches out over five communes, is actually unique in the Médoc in that it is the only one to contain all the range of wines, as rich as they are vast, from First Great Cru Classé to the Fifths, not forgetting its famous Crus Bourgeois and its Crus Artisans.

In Margaux there is a predominance of Garonne gravel on a central plateau of about 4 miles in length and one and a quarter wide. To the east-south-east, it overlooks the low lying land by the estuary. Its east side is marked by gentle, dry valleys and a succession of ridges. The layer of gravel in Margaux was spread out by a former Garonne in the early Quaternary. Rather large in size, it is mingled with shingle of average dimension and represents the finest ensemble of Günz gravel in the Haut-Médoc. It is on this ancient layer on a Tertiary terrace of limestone or clayey marl that the best Médoc crus lie. All the conditions for successful wine are present : a large amount of gravel and pebbles, poor soil which cannot retain water and deep rooted vines.

It is customary to say that Margaux wines are the "most feminine" in the Médoc, thus stressing their delicacy, suppleness and their fruity, elegant aromas. This does not affect their great propensity for aging; just the opposite, for the relatively thin terroir imparts tannins which give them long life. The other characteristic of these wines which combine an elegant vitality, subtlety and consistency, is their diversity and personality. Over and above the flavour which is their "common denominator", they present an exceptional palette of bouquets, fruity flavours which show up differently from one château to another.

Production conditions (Decree dated August 10 1954)
In order to have the right to the Margaux appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:

- come from the commune of Margaux, Cantenac, Soussans, Arsac and Labarde, "excluding the land which by the nature of its soil or because of its situation, is unfit to produce wine of this appellation".
- satisfy precise production conditions: grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).

Vins de Bordeaux:
Grape Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Merlot
Soil: Gravel and silt plateau on a layer of limestone or silt on clay
Surface Area: 1,530 ha
