| Community Tasting Notes (average 90.5 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 1610 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | | Tasted by kakpoo on 5/4/2024 & rated 91 points: Disgorged April 2017, from 2014 base vintage. It’s great to catch one of these in the perfect spot: I opened a 2015 disgorgement last week that was past prime or flawed… but not corked. I opened a 2021 disgorgement that tasted tight, linear and focused but lacked intensity and pleasure. This 2017 disgorgement seems to be in the ideal spot: aromas are medium plus intensity with notes of white butter, popcorn, lemon curd, lemon pith and crushed rocks and maybe a hint of tarragon. These flavors continue on the palate. The finish is crisp and long for entry level Champagne, but at $70+ these should hardly be considered “entry level.” The Perlage is a bit rough and gritty but really this is nitpicking. This bottle is one of the best Cuvée de Reserve bottles that I have tasted. However, it lacks the depth and pleasure of a Reserve Oubliee, and doesn’t come anywhere close to the complexity of Les Chetillons, hence the 91 point score, but I am very happy with this bottle. Opened a hour in advance. Pours a pale gold. Opens up with mayor lemon, freshly foraged white flowers, polished steel, and blanched almonds. The palate is pitch perfect; expertly oscillating between tartness and salinity. (NV Pierre Péters "Cuvée de Réserve" Brut) ($62.00) The ’08-based wine, now shipping, is the best NV the estate has ever shown me, and surely the best since the amazing ’02-based NV. Though this wine is in principle a constantly refreshed solera (half is the new vintage and half the previous blend; Billiot among others does the same), and though the goal is to mitigate variations, I find variations anyway, which is just the way I like it. It’s disgorged 12/10 and has an absolutely rapturous perfume, as if someone entered the room toting some cologne; the palate while youthfully snippy, is strikingly flowery, with minerals playing a gauzy background chord, so exotic you think it was fermented with peonies and wisteria soaking in the juice. Pierre Peters, a small grower producing grand cru Champagne of tête de cuvée quality, still provides good value. His reserve blanc de blancs (100% Chardonnay) features crisp acidity, balanced yeastiness, and great length. Sub-Region:
Champagne - The French region of Champagne (including the cities of Rheims, Épernay, and Aÿ) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and wine-making traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range in sweetness ranging from an extra brut or brut 0, to the basic brut to demi sec to doux; some houses produce single vintage champagnes and others produce non-vintage (or incorporate wines/grapes of multiple vintages), often to preserve a specific taste; combinations of grape varietals; and colors, including a rosé. There are several sub-appellations, including the Valley of the Marnes river running from Épernay west, Massif de Saint-Thierry north and west of Rheims, Valley of the Ardre, the Mountains of Rheims (between Rheims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar in the South.
