Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.5 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 283 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Tartiflette on 3/30/2024 & rated 91 points: Even 6 hours in the decanter didn’t do it. It’s just young and need further cellaring. Lots of promise though. Muted and hidden fruit, cassis, cedar, chocolate, leather...all the classics. Tannins are plentiful. (1541 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 2/18/2024 & rated 94 points: Confirms previous adulatory notes. Now comfortably on its plateau of maturity, with time in hand. Nose is open for business, perfectly classical Graves profile (cassis, cedar, tobacco, warm brickes); elegant and structured but charming and silky palate, energetic and with perfect weight, sandy tannins; very good resonance and length on the finish. Stylish claret, right up my street. (3054 views)
92+ pts (3031 views)
Tasted by maxima on 1/12/2024 & rated 94 points: SUPERBE encore une fois!
(2969 views)
Tasted by ducster72 on 1/11/2024 & rated 89 points: Not ready. I've had some luck with 2005s and I'd hoped 3 hours in a decanter would be enough to get the wine to open up. The wine is open enough to not punish you but not so open to give a lot of pleasure. 5 more years, I'd think. (2704 views)
Tasted by GuWin on 1/10/2024 & rated 92 points: Burgund '21 + moden vin (Centropa, Oslo, Norway): Dyp mørk og ungdommelig farge. (2617 views)
Tasted by OttawaB on 1/5/2024 & rated 93 points: Delicious. Nice red berry notes, cassis, medium acidity, medium tannins. Still a bit juicy feeling, but drying fruit as well. Cedar, spices, graphite. Nicely balanced. Last bottle. (2275 views)
Tasted by olemski on 12/30/2023 & rated 90 points: Deeper colour than the 2000 vintage alongside it. Deeper fruit also, and considerably less well developed. There is nothing too rough and unready at the moment, but it's lacking in harmony, length and not least elegance. Again particularly compared to the 2000. However, the potential is considerable. (Decanted about two hours) (1891 views)
Tasted by AudunG on 12/28/2023 & rated 92 points: Lighter fruit aromas than in a 2000 tasted same evening, but more vanilla. Also more elegant and less tertiary than the 2000. Needs more time in the cellar. (2274 views)
Tasted by SGoo on 12/25/2023: Light Bordeaux. Quite good (1653 views)
Tasted by curtr on 12/23/2023 & rated 94 points: Needed one hour to open up. Still a bit shy. Drink 2025 to 2035. (1769 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 10/28/2023 & rated 94 points: An easy afternoon with close friends (@ My place): Second tasting note about this wine on the same day. It was another bottle from another source and both bottles were tasted blind. There were similarities, but also differences. This bottle also had stable smells and graphite and dark chocolate on the palate, some sweetness and salty impressions and a little more freshness than the first bottle. 93 – 94 (3303 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 10/28/2023 & rated 93 points: An easy afternoon with close friends (@ My place): Bouquet with some stable smells, graphite, red berries, smoke and vanilla. On the palate red and dark berries, some earth, chocolate, beautiful oak, autumn forest, good acidity and tannin with still some bite. Elegant and luxurious wine. Ready now and a future of some years. (2999 views)
Tasted by chatters on 10/20/2023: Coravin fun - Domaine de Chevalier rouge (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Savoury, earthy, leather, touches of forest floor, blackcurrant, plums, brambles, sweet spice. Juicy, blackcurrant plum brambles, powdery drying tannins persist with the fruit assisted by non-intrusive alcohol warmth on the long finish, time. Good potential but more time. (2539 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 10/17/2023 & rated 93 points: Domaine visit. Showed well, tannins already integrated. Red fruit and spices. Medium complexity. (3182 views)
Tasted by Jimaronson on 10/5/2023 & rated 94 points: I thought I tried to see how the 2005s are doing. I can certainly say that they are somewhat closed. If this bottle represents Bordeaux. I would give it 3 to 5 years to open up. It is a good bottle of wine so don't be concerned, but it still needs time. (2897 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 10/5/2023 & rated 93 points: Tim Bday lunch at GW-IT. Tasted blind. Drank in Gabriel Standart.
Guessed a good SuperTuscan as it was so polished but thought it was 10 years younger than 2005.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, purplish ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of black licorice, blackberries, blackcurrant, black cherries, polished dark earth gravel. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13%), polished high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of purple boysenberries, blackberries, blackcurrant, black cherries, black licorice. Long finish.
Very good quality. Clean polished but still young. Needs a lot more age. (2634 views)
Tasted by popopdrops on 9/5/2023 & rated 93 points: Ikke dekantert. Herlig, særlig dag 2. Topp stoff. (1633 views)
Tasted by Vine on 9/3/2023 & rated 95 points: Incredible. A subtle, remarkable wine of class and structure. Alas, my last bottle. (2910 views)
Tasted by popopdrops on 7/29/2023 & rated 92 points: Ikke dekantert. Meget pen dag 1 og dag 2. (1690 views)
Tasted by AudunG on 5/28/2023 & rated 90 points: A bit green aromas with dark fruit and pine needles. Light weighted and a bit thin on the palate. Would expect more punch in a 2005. Tasted after a Leoville-Poyferre 95, which overpowered the Chevalier. (3693 views)
Tasted by popopdrops on 5/19/2023 & rated 92 points: Ikke dekantert, men åpen i 20 timer. Herlig vin, helt i balanse, god frukt, høflige taniner og syre. (1534 views)
Tasted by OttawaB on 5/14/2023 & rated 93 points: Nicely aged. No notes but delicious. (3913 views)
Tasted by chatters on 4/14/2023: Coravin fun - Domaine de Chevalier (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas of brambles, blackcurrant, sweet spice, with agitation cedar, plums a little savoury spice as well. A melange of dark hued fruits with sweet spice on the palate, drying, cedary integrated tannic burr on the mid palate. It's still not showing a lot of complexity but is elegance and balanced. Quite nice. (4153 views)
Tasted by rikipedia on 3/24/2023 & rated 97 points: The Four Seasons Tasting 2005 Bordeaux Second Growth (Aubergine Restaurant): (Tasted Blind) Opens with intense spice notes with red and black fruits. A fabulous entry that has fresh acidity, elegant, mineral as the wine sits upright on the palate. Excellent concentration; the fruit is quite sweet and more black than red, showing blackcurrant, black plum, toasted herbs, tobacco, 85% dark chocolate and this underlying minerally-dry stone quality. This latter gives the wine vibrancy and energy, extending the finish for a long, persistent length. The tannins have density and are still relatively tight. And brushed with oak spices and crushed shortbread. A classy pulsating wine. (3698 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
