Tasted by dlcass on 5/12/2024 & rated 98 points: Burgundian nose with complexity, balance and minimality. Creme brûlée on the palate. Perhaps, like a "huge" Montrachet. Delicious and special wine. (48 views)
Tasted by rosenst1 on 3/16/2024 & rated 93 points: PnP. Medium gold. Intense nose of tropical and orchard fruits. On the palate this has excellent depth of flavor with pear, peach, and other stone fruits. Perhaps a bit soft on the finish to balance the intensity of the fruit. Lovely wine though perhaps not at the top of the Marcassins I've had. (483 views)
Tasted by VinoGeeko on 12/8/2023 & rated 95 points: Full disclosure: non-blind. And most expensive white I've tasted to date. And note taken on the memory of this pre-Thanksgiving dinner wine.

It was the most balanced chardonnay I've ever tasted. It was a hair less bold than a good Aubert/Kistler Chard (at a quarter the price), a tad more "French" in style, but equally as concentrated. And yet even the most devoted burghound couldn't call it overextracted. Its primary flavors are beginning to give way to secondary and tertiary- lovely. It was even good on day 2.

Might be worth the cost of admission.

To be short (though I've used the word hundreds of times) I think I now know the meaning of "elegant". Bravo! Will drink well thru at least 2030. (972 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 12/1/2023 & rated 93 points: Very ripe but now blowsy, tropical, verbena, a little reductive palate touch ABV (1361 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 8/1/2023 & rated 92 points: Ornellaia Dinner (Stefani Prime - Lincolnwood IL): Opulent but also layered and nicely complex. Nothing reticent here, but it is bright enough to retain balance. Still, I found it more of a wine "cocktail" that was better on its own vs when paired with food. I haven't tasted this wine in 4+ years and I liked it much more tonight vs before. (2349 views)

Tasted 2012 and 2013 together, preferred the palate of 2012. Less expressive on the nose but the palate has a more classic style, not as rich as 2013, the balance is almost there, good but a touch too warm in the finish for my taste though. These are very expensive though. (1712 views)
Tasted by jshufelt on 3/15/2023 & rated 95 points: Consistent with previous bottles - delicious. (1904 views)
Tasted by N.Bonaparte on 2/28/2023 & rated 94 points: Had this a year ago. This was a pop and pour at a restaurant and opened up in about 30 min. A full bodied, well balanced wine in its prime. This will continue to hold here for another 2-3 years. A wine worth its mailing list price but not its secondary market price. Revisit 2024 (1709 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 11/19/2022 & rated 97 points: Absolutely delicious fruit and floral notes on the nose and palate with silky smooth texture and oaky notes with juicy acidity culminating in a long evolving finish. Drinking beautifully! Pairs beautifully with shellfish! (1819 views)
Tasted by nicholswfu on 10/30/2022: mistakenly placed into inventory (1589 views)
Tasted by slywka7 on 10/15/2022 & rated 95 points: For a bottle previously coravin’d. Aromas of lemon oil, butterscotch, mango, papaya and pie crust. Flavors of lemon oil, mango, pineapple, papaya and spice. Ends with a long finish 40+ seconds with tropical fruit and vanilla notes. Not quite as good as last time but still excellent. (1617 views)
Tasted by rosenst1 on 7/8/2022 & rated 94 points: Chilled then PnP after transporting to a friend's house. Medium deep gold. Outrageous nose of tropical fruits, papaya, guava, and orchard fruits especially peach. Great depth of fruit on the palate and a very long finish. May be a touch behind the 13 as the acidity to balance the unctuous fruit might be a bit lacking. Excellent wine in any case and drinking very well at age 10. (1754 views)
Tasted by kirbo1967 on 4/16/2022 & rated 93 points: I have been holding on to my 6 bottles of the 2012. Figured it was time to try one. I think this wine is read to drink. The fruit and oak are very integrated and it makes for a great drinking experience. I matched with a crab cake and it worked well. I will continue to drink through my inventory over the next year and a half. Do not want to hold to long and miss out on a great wine. (2027 views)
Tasted by N.Bonaparte on 3/11/2022 & rated 93 points: A massive wine that should be decanted. It’s a complete wine that has a long finish. Unmistakably new world that serves up layers of butter on butter. These are always fun to drink if you are on the mailing list but not $750 secondary market. These are in their prime and should drink well for at least another 3 years. Revisit 2023 (1947 views)
Tasted by Tylerk on 12/31/2021 & rated 95 points: On New Year’s Eve with Alaskan king crab- this is just an amazing wine and marcassin is my favorite American chardonnay- just spectacular in every way- (2062 views)
Tasted by slywka7 on 12/31/2021 & rated 97 points: Aromas of lemon oil, pineapple, mango, papaya and butterscotch . Flavors of lemon pie, mango, papaya, pineapple and touch of vanilla. Ends with a 45-50 second finish with tropical fruit notes. Very well balanced but unabashedly California. Very fresh and young. Quite excellent. (1926 views)
Tasted by KenK on 12/24/2021 flawed bottle: This bottle did not seem corked or damaged, yet the wine was devious of fruit and just not representative of past experiences. Down to my blast two bottles now, hopefully better luck. This were purchased directly from the winery. (1934 views)
Tasted by Lord of the Bottles on 11/14/2021 & rated 93 points: Plenty of notes already so will just say I thought the wine was good, but not great. Palate of vanilla, butter, pear, citrus and hint of green apple with a medium finish and low acidity. Good complexity if lacking a bit of verve and the lack of acidity made it come across a touch flabby. I do enjoy hedonistic chards (like Batards or similar in warm years) but this seemed overpriced for what it is unless I’m missing something. 92-93 drink now given worrying low acidity. (2017 views)
Tasted by ddamron on 10/6/2021 & rated 100 points: A beautiful day calls for an amazing flight of white wines. The 2012 Marcassin Chardonnay is perfection. Lemon, pear, yellow apple, mango and honeysuckle on a bed of limestone that coats the mid palate with a viscosity that’s refreshing sweet but not cloying. American Montrachet. -DD100. (2412 views)
Tasted by Tylerk on 10/4/2021 & rated 96 points: Wow- drinking great now - birthday dinner wine with a swordfish puttanesca course. Really amazingly integrated flavors and nice complexity- mineralogy, hints of orange, pear- I didn’t get any ‘oak’ despite their use of French oak barrels. This is in the zone now but I suspect has a fun 5 or more years ahead and will likely evolve more. Marcassin likely best Chardonnays in America- I’m a big Kistler/Ramey/pahlmeyer fan but these seem in an even more exalted zone….. (1788 views)
Tasted by acyso on 9/12/2021 & rated 70 points: Vinetasters: Northern California family-owned chardonnays and pinots (Skokie, IL): Served double blind. Awful high-toned esterified nose of bananas. Oily palate with no discernible acidity. High in alcohol, low on flavour and freshness. Gross. My 7th, group's 8th. (2802 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 9/10/2021 & rated 94 points: Another lost Friday afternoon gathering - mostly French (Jailbreak Brewery, Laurel, MD): Expressive nose displaying ripe yellow fruit, pineapple, creme brulee, cracker jack, smoke, sweet spices and mineral. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers rich opulent yellow fruit, dense and deeply toned, medium acidity and mineral, and a long ripe yellow fruit driven finish with crème brulee at the end. A classic Marcassin, i.e. a classic ripe Cali Chardonnay. (2460 views)
Tasted by MAXIMUM SATISFACTION on 7/24/2021 & rated 96 points: Last bottle here. Likely still 2-3 years more until peak. Prior notes hold. (2410 views)
Tasted by HRT on 7/17/2021: Magnificent! Light gold color. Nose of pears, apples, orange. Full bodied and luscious. Great acidity and long finish. Loved by all. (1875 views)
Tasted by fdub on 7/17/2021 & rated 95 points: Really intense roundness and character from the Francois Ferrer barrels. Still really nice freshness and depth however. (1955 views)

Chardonnay

The Chardonnay Grape

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
