Tasted by Eric on 5/4/2024: ESTG does Blind Triples (Newcastle, WA): Of the flight of three, this was the least generous, certainly pleasing but with some astringency and some harsh tannins. Very much a 2002. (322 views)
Tasted by Redteeth on 4/26/2024: Darn. This was my last bottle. the wine was wonderful. I gave it a good decanting and let it breathe for an hour. The cork was sound and there was a modest amount of sediment. The wine displayed a very good balance of mature, rich fruit with structure. The wine is in a great place now and i wish i had more. It was a pleasure to drink with a nice meal. (307 views)
Tasted by Genghis88 on 3/29/2024 & rated 92 points: With l'il Rob today
Ox-blood in color
Classic tertiary nose. Some sangr, leather, hint of cedar
All flavor traits integrated. Tastes like the nose. Medium plus finish. Perfect BDX in the zone. Drink up now!!!

MAGNUMS ARE BETTER!!!! (676 views)
(706 views)
Tasted by Wespi1 on 3/4/2024 & rated 92 points: See my prenious post in Oct 21 - opened my next bottle. Strike on! What a gem! 3hrs decant. Elegant colour. Nose is elegant and elevating. Tons of blue and black berries, a bit of coffee and of char; Tertiaries have developed well. Vivid colour. Vintage was average, but this one is a stunner. Palate is confirming nose. Tannins have intergrated super well: still a very bit grippy, but never mind over an awesome meal. Drinking window finally and wide open. Drink now or never. (952 views)
 Tasted by Raizes on 2/29/2024 & rated 91 points: 以清甜的蘑菇汤作为开始,黑樱桃、黑莓、烟丝、咖啡粉、泥土和檀香,果味一般但木香精致,在口中的集中度表现出色。入口结构感比较强,单宁细腻而酸度高挑,呈现出纤瘦、优雅和克制的风格。 (449 views)
Tasted by batstongue on 1/9/2024 & rated 92 points: Drinking beautifully. Integration of fruit and tannin and long finish. (1365 views)
Tasted by Tao on 10/30/2023 & rated 91 points: Nose of rich, spicy, peppery dark fruits! Slightly course on the palate, still young and tannic! Blackish in colour. Takes time to open up (1938 views)
Tasted by forceberry on 9/10/2023 & rated 88 points: A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (58%), Merlot (38%), Cabernet Franc (3%) and Petit Verdot (1%). 13,5% alcohol.

Dense, fully opaque blackish-red color with a faint, evolved pomegranate color. The dark-toned nose feels slightly evolved and subtly sweetish with aromas of dark plummy fruit, some toasty oak spice, a little bit of ripe blackcurrant, a light Fino Sherry-like streak of aldehydic greenness and a hint of pruney dark fruit. The wine feels ripe, quite silky and pretty open-knit on the palate with a moderately full body and quite savory flavors of juicy dark plum and meaty umami, some wizened dark berries, a little bit of toasty oak spice, light woody notes of pencil shavings, a brambly hint of black raspberries and a faint aldehydic touch of green almonds or green apple slices. The structure relies a bit more on the high acidity than on the somewhat resolved yet still moderately grippy medium tannins. The finish is long, savory and somewhat grippy with a dry, slightly aldehydic aftertaste of ripe blackcurrants and savory meaty character, some brambly notes of black raspberries, a little bit of toasty mocha oak, light woody nuances of pencil shavings, a juicy hint of dark plummy fruit and a touch of aldehydic greenness.

I've had this vintage once before, and back then it was a very lovely and serious effort. Had it not been suffering from a faint touch of acetaldehyde, which lent a vague green-toned note of sorrel or green almond to the flavors, this probably would've been better than the 2000 vintage, which felt a bit bigger and more polished in comparison. However, the aldehydic greenness took its toll on the wine and while you could taste the finesse and complexity, this bottle was a bit of a let-down. It was still an enjoyable wine, but knowing how good this vintage can (and should) be, this vintage turned out the be the most disappointing bottle in our 2002-1985 vertical of Cos d'Estournel, unfortunately.  Tasted by AlanM68 on 8/27/2023 & rated 92 points: Quite the range of tasting notes below, from drink now to relax and drink over next 5 years. I’m more the latter based on the last but one of the case tried last night. Plenty of fruit, beautifully integrated and good length. I will probably save the last one until 2027 to see how it is at 25 years old - I think it would also be fine in 2032 but not sure I have the patience. (2145 views)
Tasted by NickA on 8/22/2023 & rated 93 points: Popped and poured, the view (I think correctly) being that this lighter vintage wouldn't withstand the decant required for the Montrose 2004. Mature, more tertiary nose, with more gamey notes than fruit. Really glorious on the palate, the fruit on the cusp of ceding dominance to earthy maturity, clean acidity, and a long, enthralling finish. (2341 views)
Tasted by edjBoca on 7/16/2023 & rated 93 points: This was my last bottle. It opened over 90 minutes and drank great for 2 hours after. Some cool dark aromas but not a huge nose. The medium fruit still retains some complexity and secondary notes. Tanin fully integrated. Medium length finish. The balance of Cos was great even in this lesser year. A joy today. The best of my bottles. This is not going anywhere. Should have another 5 years of peak drinking.... (2084 views)
Tasted by jayhawkdds on 7/15/2023 & rated 95 points: Drinking wonderfully. Don’t wait any longer if you’ve got any! (1772 views)
Tasted by Lma1969 on 6/25/2023: Another great bottle. This wine is in a great place now. Give it about an hours decant. (1677 views)
Tasted by mwerfel on 6/24/2023 & rated 92 points: Very tasty wine graphite plum blackberry blueberry very heavy blue fruit no secondary notes open for a very long time I think it's in its drinking window recommend giving it a decant for about 45 minutes to an hour (1274 views)
Tasted by R Z on 6/16/2023 & rated 94 points: Surprisingly full, rich and still prodigious fruit in this 2002 Cos d'Estournel. Showed much better than the 2002 Lafitte Rothschild I tried earlier this year. Removed after about 18 years in temperature-controlled wine storage. Bright color, throwing substantial sediment, which I separated by triple decanting, rinsing and returning to the bottle, and drank with dinner. Saved half the bottle, and it held up fine on the second day. (1352 views)
Tasted by Thief on 5/19/2023 & rated 93 points: Red currants, hint of vanilla, super silky tannins. (1521 views)
Tasted by olracx62 on 5/19/2023 & rated 93 points: after some fiftheen years in my cellar still powerful and in good shape, with no sign of age. Tertiary scents at the nose which appear consistent at the mouth, where you can feel the multiple dimensions of CdE with wonderful and mouthfilling hints of spices. Maybe 2002 was not the best vintage but with this bottle all promises are kept. Still a few years ahead in its best drinking window. Perfect companion in this rainy and cold evening of May (1429 views)
Tasted by Dibbs on 4/16/2023 & rated 90 points: Given it is current QPR, bad buy. I bought this about 4 years back at a relatively good price. Given that QPR, I think this is delivering decent value. That being said, the couple Piedmont wines I had over this month at half Cos' value are delivering similar pleasure points. (1834 views)
Tasted by Wine.ape on 2/16/2023 & rated 91 points: The wine poured a deep purple hue with some slight browning in the edges, indicating some marurity.

On the nose, the wine exuded the fragrance of mature fruits like blackberry, plum and raspberry, coupled with the scent of espresso and chalk. A slight trace of barnyard added a touch of earthiness to the bouquet.

The wine still maintains a good structure, and the dusty tannins are still present. Though the wine is a bit austere, especially in the mid palate, it still provides some fun to drink. The finish is medium length and overall, the wine is quite enjoyable, considering it comes from an off vintage.

Although the wine has already reached its peak, it is still in good condition to drink now, and it is not likely to improve much from here on. Probably terrible QPR at the moment unless you have some bottles laying around. (2138 views)
Tasted by MRichman on 12/27/2022: Nice, fruit forward BDX. Good maturity, will drink well for at least another 7-10 years if properly stored. Very good. (2202 views)
Tasted by jono9999 on 12/26/2022 & rated 85 points: Tired and disappointing (1882 views)
Tasted by NapaRick on 12/19/2022 & rated 90 points: The wine was a dark ruby red. Eminently drinkable now. Smooth with minimal tannins. Light fruit raspberry/blackberry. Not sure how much age is left on this vintage. Recommend drinking over the next year or so. (1981 views)
Tasted by dannyg on 12/10/2022 & rated 90 points: This was donated for the Hong Kong Wine Society Annual Dinner 2022 that was served alongside 2012 Sassicaia for the main course - Beef Wellington. Both wines complimented each other with the main course. While the Sassicais was very muscular and sticky on the palate, the Cos was much subtle, more feminine, plenty of soft berries, silly tannins, the familiar cigar box, sweet spice and a medium finish. It is ripe to drink and enjoy it now. Does not have concentrated fruit or much acidity to take it more longer. (1903 views)
Tasted by DenisLee on 12/10/2022: Still drinking well. (1583 views)

(Cos d'Estournel) Nose of spicey oak, forest floor, cigar and some exotic spices. Palate was juicy and ripe with nice richness and concentration. Sweet and ripe tannins with great length. Young but very accesible now.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

St. Estèphe

Read more about St. Estephe and its wines Whereas the first activity recorded in Saint-Estèphe goes back as far as the Middle Bronze Age, the first vines date from the Roman Occupation. But it was the Bordeaux merchants who by aging and selling Saint-Estèphe wines themselves were largely responsible for this appellation's fame. And in the nineteenth century, noted for its prosperity, the great estates of today were created. The movement continues today with the merging of small estates.

A land of great wines, Saint-Estèphe is situated almost in the centre of the Médoc, close to the Gironde Estuary. The appellation is equidistant from Bordeaux and the Pointe de Grave.
The beds of soil are characterized by their remarkable diversity, the result of their undulating relief and excellent drainage. Quartz and well-rounded pebbles mingled with light, sandy surface soil are found everywhere, giving the wines a distinctive finesse. And the subsoil is made up of the famous Saint-Estèphe limestone, which outcrops on the west of the commune.

Tasting
Thanks to ideal conditions of climate and geology, Saint-Estèphe wines are characterized by their sturdy qualities and robust constitution. Accordingly, they can be laid down for a very long time while yet preserving their youth and freshness. Distinguished by a subsoil which is more clayey than that in the other communal appellations which lie by the river, the wine here attains a distinctive individuality : a very rich tannic structure, a fine deep red colour and an exceptional backbone with aromas of great finesse.

Production conditions (Decree dated September 11, 1936):

In order to have the right to the Saint-Estèphe appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the communes of Saint-Estèphe, "excluding any parcels in that area which are situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
