| Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 10 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by Mootsie on 9/10/2021: I think the bottle we had about a year ago was better. This one has higher acidity and those dark fruits and licorice notes we love so well seem to be a bit muted. Maybe these are starting to go the other way. I’ll never know, this was my last one. (769 views) | | Tasted by mkribar on 3/19/2021: Surprisingly light color on the nose. Strong classic aglianico nose when we first opened it: tar, roses, etc. But it blends more with a tawny/red fruited/oxidized character after being open for about an hour. Dried cherries and rosehip. On the palate, medium + tannin, medium+ acid. More classic aglianico on the palate with the rose/tar centered.
This is in a great spot right now. There's definitely a density of the fruit which ties it to California, but this reflects its Italian roots. (761 views) | | Tasted by Mootsie on 8/14/2020 & rated 93 points: Really nice place right now. Good acidity, elevated spice notes, black cherry, leather, anise. Great wine. (1019 views) | | Tasted by S-F on 7/16/2020 & rated 91 points: Slightly shy nose. Somewhere between deep and light colored, similar to a Grenache in hue. There's a slight spicy, peppery note on the palate. Nothing is out of line, just pure elegance all the way through. Very enjoyable. (1038 views) | | Tasted by Mootsie on 2/26/2020 & rated 92 points: Evolving nicely. The tannins are integrating and the wine is taking on a nice, big spicy finish. Last bottle, but I think these improve from here. Drink or hold. (1173 views) | | Tasted by EMTAME on 7/16/2018 & rated 91 points: Deep garnet, with a slightly shy nose of spice box. Ripe red cherries, tart raspberries, and cranberry sauce are prominent on the palate, followed by warm spice notes of anise and cinnamon, bark, and dried herb. A burst of acidity shows up on the back end and the finish is long, clean, and mildly drying. The is truer to the Italian original than the sweeter ‘13, and is a really nice effort. (1475 views) | | Tasted by Mootsie on 2/2/2017 & rated 92 points: Authentic representation of its Italian cousin. Rich red licorice, cherry, pencil shavings/apple core and herbs. Nice tannic structure. Old world. (1948 views) | | Tasted by David_T on 12/14/2016 & rated 90 points: Transparent ruby red. Red fruit, licorice and herbal aromas. The flavors have tons of red cherry and cranberry up front, a bit of black cherry towards the finish. These are complemented by light cocoa and herbal notes. Fruit-forward at 15.1 but not jammy with medium acid and light tannins (surprised the tannins aren't heavier given the grape). Drinking well already but should evolve nicely over the next few years. (1877 views) | | Tasted by nospeel on 2/9/2016 & rated 91 points: Delicious. Some red cherry, coffee and licorice on the nose. Earthy, medium body. Not overly tannic. Some interesting spice - anise and a little mint. Really enjoying this. Went really well with some manhattan style fish chowder tonight. Two for two with the wines from West of Temperance... | Aglianico Varietal character (Appellation America)
The Southern Italy Outpost (on the CellartTracker Forum)
Originally from Greece and an early Roman favorite, Aglianico was planted as early as the seventh century B.C. Infused with interesting aromas of plums, raisins and licorice. Dried floral notes flow easily into the medium to full-bodied palate of black pepper, smooth, subtle cherry, and plum flavors.. A stylish, intriguing young red, with fine tannins and a ripe balanced finish.USAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson CaliforniaNapa Valley.http://www.stagecoachvineyard.com/vineyards/our_vineyards.php Santa Ynez.http://www.everyvine.com/org/Camp_Four/vineyard/Camp_Four/ |
