Community Tasting Notes (average 91.8 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 265 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by pbaek on 5/13/2024: Opens up with a bouquet of Christmas spices, cherry jam, dates and figs. The brown notes are somewhat prominent and I’m not a fan of those. Sleek and almost elegant on the palate, the fruit more red-toned with marks of lavender and thyme mixing in. There’s an air of flowers and white pepper. I think this is finally arriving, and as usual with Charvin one gets a glimpse of what the soil and weather had in store for us in 2005. STGT. (116 views)
Tasted by Theamateurwinesnob on 4/19/2024: Mostly spice, coffee, tar, and licorice. On the palate quite stemmy and bitter. Lacked fruit. I’ve had some really appealing whole cluster wines but this isn’t it. Couldn’t finish the bottle. (340 views)
Tasted by spidermark on 4/13/2024 & rated 90 points: This was my third Charvin over the past year from a few different vintages. I would have to say that though all were good, none of them were able to deliver a high level of enjoyment. They seem like they were textbook studies with a lot of structure and pretty good acid, but the fruits were not that plush, there was a sternness to the wine and though

I've really liked Charvin wines in the past, I don't think I'll be seeking anymore. There's just too much good CDP out there, that deliver great deals of pleasure. (388 views)
Tasted by coremill on 3/25/2024 & rated 88 points: Out of 375mL. Pretty nose of kirschy, ripe black fruit, florals, mint, twigs -- the whole cluster is clear. Riper than my taste, but with good acidity and the alcohol is in check. The tannins are fine and chewy, giving grip rather than glossy. Even though I don't especially care for this ripeness, there's still much to admire here. (593 views)
Tasted by wine4ever on 1/28/2024: From our cellar. Decanted for sediment and drank over three hours. Big wine, full bodied, dark fruits, meat juices, spices, herbs. Can tell it's from a hot year, but the intensity of the flavors helps mask the higher alcohol level. Have one more, will try it again in a couple years, hoping for some more tertiary flavors to develop. (846 views)
Tasted by Cote d'Or on 12/3/2023: Tasted over 2 hrs
-med dark red minimal bricking
-jammy cherry spice cassis mature elements
-med acidity, med+/full weight thick almost unctuous faded earthy kirsch faint caramel oxidative note and some mature notes, med- tannins
-still big 18 years on and just barely showing any tertiary characteristics (1129 views)
Tasted by king-bing on 10/14/2023: 30 min decant. Not much sediment. Deep and slightly baked/stewed fruit: plums and cherry. Rich but not that heavy. Lovely top notes of wild herbs rescue this. Pleasant enough but hard to love. My last bottle of Charvin and I can't see myself buying any more. (1196 views)
Tasted by redders on 10/12/2023 & rated 91 points: Not budged much since last bottle 6 years ago. Excellent Fruit balance good structure and ripe but balanced finish. (1120 views)
Tasted by afot on 9/5/2023: Chateauneuf at its best. Sweet red fruits complemented with balaamic and herbal notes. Sensible saltiness. Delicious. (1221 views)
Tasted by king-bing on 8/18/2023: 5/6. A little muted to start (and cold) but 30 mins and we're off. Super id-toned and complex, with baked earth, old libraries, leather, some dark raspberry. After 4 hours the last glass was showing some liqueur/alcohol in the finish. Seems good to go now. (1087 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 2/5/2023: Monthly Tasting Group: Rhones (Noyes and Cutler, St. Paul, MN): Tasted. Small Taste of the '05 and '07 at the end of the night. Personally, I really like Charvin, but this was tough sledding after the older CdP's we had earlier. No notes, but probably favored the '07 slightly, both good, but not that different. (2031 views)
Tasted by DK Amateur on 1/14/2023: Very dark, almost black, with mature rim. Undefinably dark and round and most pleasing, showing notes of dust, dark berries and chocolate. Perhaps a bit lacking in structure in terms of tannin and acidity. (1501 views)
Tasted by tomlee on 12/22/2022 & rated 92 points: Crimson in color. 14.5% ABV. Heady nose of red fruits, kirsch, bacon fat and herbes de Provence. Medium body with exquisite acidity. Structure and power in spades. Raspberry, licorice, roasted herbs and blood on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish with prominent tannins. An old school producer and a classic vintage has produced what should be a long lived wine provided there is enough fruit to go the distance. Best over the next 5-7 years. (1630 views)

Délicieux, long et ...vraiment cochon! Un autre superbe vin! 95 pts (1994 views)
Tasted by DanielAVTL on 10/13/2022 flawed bottle: Tragically, this was a bad bottle.

Had very high expectations after drinking the magnificent 2001 just a fortnight ago, but alas, the bottle was completely off. Not corked, not quite oxidized, just off. No aroma whatsoever, devoid of tannins and structure, just complete plonk. Cork was well preserved, not quite clear what went wrong here, just bad luck with this specific bottle I guess...

C'est la vie (1297 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 8/28/2022: Garnet with faded edge. Some red fruit and bark on the nose. Elegant, medium weight. Excellent balance between ripe but slightly faded red fruit, tobacco, and spice with gentle remaining tannins. This producer remains a favorite for the restrained Burgundian style and delicacy rather than power of the fruit. Fully expressed now. (1853 views)
Tasted by chitowncdpguy on 8/18/2022: Very nice. Lots of earthy spice with concentrated fruit kind of in the background. Long finish, well balanced, somewhat robust. (1355 views)
Tasted by Esmags7 on 7/31/2022 & rated 94 points: Drank with an ‘06 and ‘07 Charvin - this bottle presented best. Well integrated, no heat, a surprising amount of (dark) fruit compared to the other two bottles. This bottle was definitely in its prime, no fading whatsoever. (1357 views)
Tasted by tom_wine on 7/30/2022 & rated 91 points: It's in a perfect place now. Some fine tannin left but still the youthful character with raspberry and black cherry flavors, herbal noses, a nice minerality and long in the finish. (1317 views)
Tasted by prism on 6/24/2022 & rated 94 points: Outstanding. (1475 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 6/10/2022: Chateauneuf & Champagne $60+ Non-Blind (Bin 75 Alpharetta, GA): More of a cloudy reddish core with large brick rim; liqueured nose, kirsch, medicinal, plum and fig, Luden's cough drop; silky texture, full bodied and somewhat alcoholic, intense but there's a measured elegance to it. (1037 views)
Tasted by PlanetX on 5/22/2022 & rated 94 points: Bottle #5 of 6. Wow, this has matured into a lovely Burgundian version of its youthful full throttle young self. Significant bricking but retains its alluring nose. Ripe black fruits and liquorice on the palate framed by soft tannins. Has been a real joy to follows its evolution. Look forward to the final bottle in a year or two. (1486 views)
Tasted by VDLT Wine on 2/8/2022: Really good with a pronounced cherry cough syrup flavor. (1976 views)
Tasted by mmcdds on 1/24/2022 & rated 91 points: My first bottle in about 7 years and it has matured into a very nice cdp with lots of sweet, rich, penetrating, red fruit. There’s good depth and the garrigue notes, while prevalent, weren’t overpowering. The stewed fruit notes I mentioned in 2015 have evolved into a cherry fruit roll up nuance that’s quite nice. All in all, this is an excellent cdp that’s drinking well tonight. (1880 views)

OWNERS & HISTORY:
The Domaine Charvin was founded by Guillaume Charvin in 1851. 16 years later, in 1867, the entire planting area was destroyed by vine fretters. But William Charvin and other members of the family didn’t let this get them down, and replanted the soil. At this time, the family name also changed from Charavin to Charvin – due to an administrative error. The winery is situated in the northwestern part of the region next to Château Maucoil.

The family began its work with four hectares of land in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The first bottling at the winery – intended only for private consumption – took place in 1951. During the following years, most of the wine was sold to dealers. In 1990, with Laurent Charvin, the sixth generation took over the family business. During his first year, he produced some 8,000 bottles of wine. The remainder was still sold to local dealers. Since 1990, the amount of wine produced has increased each year. At the moment, the winery has 8.2 hectares of land in three different lieux-dits: Maucoil, l’Arnesque, and Cabrières, all in the northwestern part of the region. The soil there consists mainly of limestone and loam, and is more or less covered with stones. The average age of the grapevines is 45 years. Laurent Charvin loves to philosophize about nature, adjusting himself to whatever happens outside: to the weather, the soil, and the grapevines. He explains:

“I’m not sure whether the quality of the wines increases with passion; the potentials of the soil and of the grapevines are more important. You have to comprehend what you have. Besides, you should never try to copy your neighbors, because each parcel has unique material with its own DNA.”

GEOGRAPHY & VARIETALS:
Only a single red Châteauneuf-du-Pape is produced; it consists of 85% Grenache, 5% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre, and 5% Vaccarèse. The wine is made in a very traditional manner. No stems are removed; after sorting, the grapes are lightly pounded and then poured into fermentation tanks made of concrete. The wine is recirculated daily during alcoholic fermentation and maceration, which last around three weeks. Laurent is no friend of excessive extraction of the wine, but rather aims at more balance, freshness, and structure in the wine. Experimentally, and always striving to maintain optimum freshness, Laurent uses concrete tanks exclusively during the ripening process lasting eighteen months. All of the wine is bottled without interruption and without filtering, in order to avoid even the slightest differences from one bottle to the next. Annual production amounts to around 30,000 bottles.

"It would be no problem for me to make two cuvées: a powerful one and a light one. But I am convinced that only a mixture of the two will make a wine the way a wine should be, and the way I like it!"
- Laurent Charvin

Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Located in the northwest part of the appellation, with vines chiefly in Cabrieres, Maucoil, and Mont Redon, Laurent Charvin makes one of the most elegant and seamless Châteauneuf-du-Papes. Opting to produce a single cuvée, the winemaking here is staunchly traditional, with no destemming and fermentation and aging occurring all in concrete tanks for 21 months, bottled unfiltered. This is a wine that can age 20 years from any vintage as well as be accessible quite young with just a little breathing.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
