Tasted by Jimmyjules on 4/29/2024 & rated 89 points: Very disappointing and way overpriced. Varietally correct, elegant and very understated. VERY understated. Thos wine lacked complexity, had no oomph, and while quite drinkable, I kept asking, “where’s the beef”? A good $30 cabernet IMO, if priced as such. Have had many better 2014 napa cabs, most of which are drinking very nicely now. (122 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 3/6/2024 & rated 95 points: Dinner with Paul and Jeff (The George Town Club - DC): Generous black and blue fruit, good complexity. Rich, round and generous but also showing a good balance and detail. Not a blockbuster but still very Napa. Drinking well. (533 views)
Tasted by MJP Hou TX on 1/5/2024 & rated 94 points: I've been holding out for the 10 year mark thinking that would be the sweet spot and I was surprised upon opening this felt a little tired. Secondary flavors more pronounced as the fruit has faded. If one is looking for a modern play on Bordeaux from the new world this would be a good suggestion.

Could be bottle variation as this was sourced retail through Woodland Hills. Maybe a likely a condition of storage but then again, might just be vintage and winemaker style. I need to pull a newer release, say 2016+ as these wines score very well with critics.

Tasted by Geaux Tigers on 8/6/2021 & rated 94 points: On open, the cork pulled easily with little or no seepage into the cork. In fact, the color seepage on the cork looked more like a 2017 than a 2014. Not very giving on the nose either. In the decanter it went. Garnet in color, no light edges somewhat translucent.

Meant to decant 90 min, but life got in the way, and 2.5 hrs it was. Transformation successfully completed. Oak and tannins integrated. While still young, this was delicious. Black fruit, fresh crushed blackberries, black plums, black licorice, hint of dried blueberries. A hint of butter cream. A nice mineral/herbal compliment with upturned soil, dried sage. There is a whole bunch of other stuff going here that I can’t pinpoint. Fruit is acidic up front, a bit muted on the mid palate before a fluid flowing finish that shows a hint of orange citrus oil. The finish went on a good 45-60 sec. 94 for now, room for 96 in a few more years. ‘Restrained’ Napa at it finest, would interested to pair this with food, I think it could shine more.

As to the future, for me next bottle in 2024, I think these are going to be best for my palate at 10-15 yrs with potential for longer aging. (2041 views)

Blankiet Estate

Producer website

Blankiet Estate is located on the western foothills of the Mayacamas mountain range over-looking Yountville in the Napa Valley of California. Created in 1996 by Claude and Katherine Blankiet, sixteen acres have been developed by renowned viticulturist David Abreu.

The vineyards, known as Paradise Hills, are stunningly beautiful with gorgeous views of the valley. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are planted on volcanic soil. Merlot is planted on a deep layer of alluvial clay deposited by streams draining the mountain range high above. Sustainable farming is practiced and the human hand is the connection between vines and wines. Our artisanal production is less than a thousand cases of a flagship proprietary red wine, Blankiet Estate, and a few hundred cases of a Saint Emilion inspired red wine named Rive Droite.

The first eight vintages were made by the legendary Helen Turley. Then Martha McClellan-Levy took over winemaking with the 2006, 2007 and 2008 vintages assisted by world famous oenologist Michel Rolland. Vinification is done in a state of the art winery right on the property. One hundred percent new French oak barrels are used for every vintage. Our wines are aged on their lees for over two years and are bottled without fining or filtration.

Robert Parker validates our terroir, stating that the wines we produce “are world class, combining the extraordinary power of the site with unbelievable elegance and definition”.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
