Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 95.2 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 108 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Winsip on 3/31/2024 & rated 99 points: PnP, explosively fragrant aromas of dark wild berries like blueberry and cherry, whiffs of lavender, violets, fresh tobacco leaf and eucalyptus.
On the palate, so approachable, wonderful mouthfeel of freshness and balance, opulent texture but not overwhelming whatsoever, medium-bodied, fine-grained tannins, beautiful aromatic spices on the background that linger almost a minute, so elegant, so refined, cruising beautifully from start to finish. Drank over 2 hours, the first half an hour expresses world class quality that does justice its price tag. Surely this wine can develop further for the next few years or a decade but you won't disappoint to crack one to try today. Just great. (2346 views)
Tasted by Bottle Dog on 3/11/2024 & rated 95 points: Three hour decant. Medium ruby red. Gorgeous nose of dark cherries and blackberries. Nice and woodsy, with faint mushrooms. Tannins are robust whils silky smooth. No secondary notes to speak of, but delightful fruit.
Medium body lingers forever. Enjoyable now, but best to wait as too yong by years - give it to 2028 at least. (2983 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 12/24/2023 & rated 95 points: Christmas Eve dinner at Wimborne. Aired in decanter for 2+ hours. Drank in Grassl Cru.
Raised both eyebrows when this was to be popped. Was expecting austerity and disappointment. Thankfully it showed more than well!
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberries, redcurrant, dark red cherries. Developing.
On the palate, dry, very good high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), fine high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of dark red cherry confit, blackberry confit, blackcurrant + redcurrant, thin layer of tobacco tar, licorice and cassis. Very long finish with lick of spice.
Excellent quality. Luxe and lush yet controlled. Gets sweeter with more air. Bolgheri style I suppose. (4728 views)
Tasted by tdurst on 12/1/2023 & rated 88 points: Somewhat disappointing. Flat and sharp. (4827 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 11/19/2023 & rated 96 points: not blind, decanted for 1,5 hour, could/should be more
Better than last year. Voluptous, lush and elegant likewise. Expected a bit more complexity. I would open my next bottle not that quick and if then with more more air. 96 (5205 views)
Tasted by danielbleier on 11/18/2023 & rated 98 points: Decanted 5+ hours. A strong contender for WOTN, red and black fruits with licorice and spice notes. lush but relatively lightweight for the power it delivers. Many, many years in front of this wine. (4575 views)
Tasted by jmoon on 11/11/2023 & rated 95 points: Very good now, fresh deep dark and delicious. Good from first pour but opened up w air so don’t shy from a decanter. (4486 views)
Tasted by drrobvino on 9/24/2023 & rated 96 points: Some friends brought this gorgeous Red Bordeaux blend to a weekend tasting.
Stellar, regal, savory, showing off red and black fruits, perfectly ripened, with notes of charcoal, anise, briary stems, and bay leaf.
On the palate, full bodied, with a voluptuous mouthfeel, and the fruit showing pinpoint precision.
Polished tannins that should age nicely for several decades, and beautiful buffering acidity that enhances the long and lip-smacking finish.
Drink through 2040+. Amazing juice. (4609 views)
Tasted by Holadi on 9/16/2023 & rated 92 points: Beatiful wine. Full fruit. Mod tannins. High acid. Still young. Leave for another 10 yrs. Goes amazing with a very marbled Wagyu seared steak. (4032 views)
Tasted by Hppr Cellar on 7/29/2023 & rated 95 points: Pure velvet initially with well balanced fruit and tannins. Finish is surprisingly short though. (5174 views)
Tasted by joshabramson on 7/3/2023: Second time tasting this wine with similar notes. Already drinking great! Served a bit chilled with pizza. (5217 views)
Tasted by Jens DT on 5/26/2023: Sassicia 2016

Dejlig blødhed fra Toscana. En hel flaske bliver noget kvalm ift Bourgogne, men virkelig dejlig. (2237 views)
Tasted by G_H on 4/1/2023: Way way too young, massive structure and intense tannin structure, plums, blood orange, good acidity. I wouldn't try this before 2030. (5880 views)
Tasted by G_H on 3/29/2023: Not ready yet. And judging from performances from previous Sassicaia vintages it needs a good decade+ to shine.

Cool, lots of minerals, oyster shells, dark berries, strong astringency, medium to full body. (6025 views)
Tasted by JEP007 on 2/14/2023 & rated 93 points: This was so wound up over the three days it was consumed. Nowhere along the way was there any give. While I have little experience with young Super Tuscans, I was hoping that given the hype, this would have shown more fruit and perfume. It was a clenched fist of tannins. In 10-20 years the tertiary flavors will likely be amazing, but for now I cannot offer a higher score based on pleasure. (7028 views)
Tasted by RickyT12 on 2/7/2023 & rated 92 points: Decanted an hour. It’s very tight. Fruit seems weak. Might be a subpar bottle. A black tea, prune, sour cherry. Nose is classic Bordeaux, but just not the fruit I expected. (6164 views)
Tasted by maaike2 on 12/20/2022 & rated 95 points: Dinner at Richard's and Anita place on december 17, some short notes of the spectacular line-up: 5 hours in decanter. Dusty notes, incredible power, high acidity and powerful tannins. Closed Too Young. Let us open the next every 5 years. Hard to give a score, benefit of the doubt now 95. (6876 views)
Tasted by Yzhang1908 on 12/2/2022: TBD (6105 views)
Tasted by SimonDong on 10/20/2022 & rated 95 points: Delicious, red fruit (7216 views)
Tasted by Nontaco on 8/15/2022 & rated 94 points: At Il Tinello in NYC. Only got to decant for 30-45 mins. Needs more time. (8011 views)
Tasted by joshabramson on 8/1/2022 & rated 95 points: Youthful but already expressive and drinking well. Pleasing acidity paired with old world fruit, powerful but graceful. Will only improve from here with time. (8175 views)
Tasted by BordeauxBoy on 5/23/2022 & rated 97 points: Still very young. Decanted in a wide decanter at 2pm, decanted back into the bottle at 6pm, and started to drink about 8:00pm where it was just opening up. Enjoyed for the rest of the evening. Wonderful old world cabernet and cab franc blend where the fruit was void of that California sweetness but was stunningly delicious. The nose was intoxicating with some earthiness and herbs (not green herbal). A powerful wine built for aging but with air, just fabulous now. Will probably rate higher in 10 years. (8770 views)
Tasted by Bew Naweera on 4/15/2022 & rated 100 points: Sassicaia 2016 was drunk in 2022.
The recommended drinking window is between 2024-2040.

The legendary wine was very perfumed, florals like. It was let aerate for 4 hrs according to a sommelier.

The Sassicaia has a deep ruby color. On the nose, the first perfume that hit me was violet, lavender, dried flowers, sweet tobacco, menthol, wet stone.

While on the palate, The Sassicaia offered full-bodied, high alcohol level, well balanced indeed. There were, for me, blackberry, cassis, black fruit, minerals, earthy, tobacco cherry, and apple!.

This is truly one of the best wine I have ever tried. (8986 views)
Tasted by vintage_whine on 3/15/2022: Pretty, ripe and black fruited. Got some alcohol kicking through but the tannins are almost already fully resolved. Acid is bright but still long term age ability is a concern on this wine. Pretty now. Seamless blending, good minerality but fully ripe fruit. And still, some elegance (8867 views)
Tasted by Fredde17 on 12/18/2021 & rated 100 points: Absolutely fabulous! I had bought this in a restaurant 6 month prior to drinking. When we had it I asked for it to be opened 4h before. Nose: dark rich opulent fruit, some cassis (more red), violet, liquorice, dried plum, apricot and some fig. Mouth: very long sweet tannins and silky smooth. Dry (still young and therefore a bit astringent). Loved it! (10074 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Sassicaia

In 1994, Sassicaia was granted a unique distinction of having the only DOC dedicated to a single wine (Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC). So there are two distinct, non-overlapping definitions for Sassicaia in CellarTracker:

* 1994 and younger use the Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC.
* 1993 and older are labeled simply as table wines, Vino da Tavola.
