Community Tasting Notes (average 93.3 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 23 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Hondo701 on 9/22/2023 & rated 94 points: Informal notes from phone, tasted at winery as part of tour -

Nose - blackberry, loam, graphite
Palate - dark berry, slight damp earth, green pepper, definite Cab Franc influence but very well done, really nice complexity and full mouth feel
Other - supple tannin, medium acid, very well balanced, long dark berry finish, very good, went into this thinking the reviews probably had some hype influence but was really impressed (430 views)
Tasted by WinoRick on 6/18/2023 & rated 94 points: A gift from my friend Livio. In short, head and shoulders above any East Coast wine I've ever had. Whatever the blend, its tannins are resolved and everything is in balance for current drinking... or aging for several more years. Bravo!

Edit 6 months later: I praised the wine to a wine knowledgeable friend, and he said that they source their grapes from California. Can anyone comment on this?? (619 views)
Tasted by wdcwineguys on 11/25/2022 & rated 94 points: PNP and enjoyed over several hours. Nose of blackberry, black pepper, graphite. Smooth tannins, long finish. This wine has come together so well. Enjoy now or continue to hold. (943 views)
Tasted by WallWino1 on 10/24/2022 & rated 94 points: Thorny dark fruit. Balanced. Great spice notes. (935 views)
Tasted by pakabear on 9/19/2022 & rated 91 points: Once again this wine shows well, but I just can’t see the price. On this day it tasted very similar to many 40-50 dollar left banks I’ve had. This is without a doubt one of the best if not the best wine coming out of Virginia, however there is still some progress to go before matching up to other parts of the world. (1200 views)
Tasted by wilypod on 12/20/2021 & rated 92 points: Tasted blind. Beautiful, but tight. Bright red berry tending toward cranberry, griotte cherry, and dark chocolate, beautifully integrated and not over-done oak spice, some fleshiness, and mild tannins. While the aromatic and palate profiles spoke to me as Bordeaux, another at our table of 12 reasonably suggested a Pinot Noir. Striking verve that one rarely finds in those sumptuous Bordeaux blends from California led me to guess a Washington state Merlot, in line with a right bank Merlot-driven blend.

Upon revelation of its Virginia Cabernet Sauvignon origins, I sensed a kinship with Linden Vineyard's world class Hardscrabble Cabernet Sauvignon based Bordeaux blend. (The Hardscrabble also tends to be tight in its youth and takes time to unveil its glories.) The Rdv is very expressive but clearly needed a long decant that we did not give it to strut all its stuff, so my score of 92 may be unrealistically low. This should age quite well over the next 10 years, but is open for business now with a 3-4 hour decant. (1278 views)

Tasted by SkyeWalker on 12/27/2020 & rated 95 points: Excellent (1430 views)
Tasted by EricKnick on 6/21/2020 & rated 94 points: Deep ruby color. Blackberry, black cherry, and earth on the nose. Tastes of blackberry, black currant, fig, dark chocolate, leather, and mocha. Balanced acid, subtle tannins, and a beautiful long finish. Good now with a decant but time in the cellar will pay dividends. I’ll dispense with the cliche comparisons to Napa and Bordeaux benchmarks and instead note this wine is a great reflection of its terroir in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Undoubtably, this is Virginia’s red wine standard bearer. (1992 views)
Tasted by pakabear on 11/14/2019 & rated 91 points: Served blind with some stiff competition, although it's a very good wine, it doesn't stand up well against many wines 1/3 it's price. It's great seeing VA produce wines that are of this quality however. Drinks well out of the gate, but got better with some air. Cherry, cola, cedar, dried earth, very good balance, but lacks enough stuffing. (1949 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 11/14/2019 & rated 92 points: Double blind Cab based wine tasting (Eddie V's - Tysons Corner, VA): Medium expressive nose displaying ripe red fruit, cherry, plum, a hint of cassis, caramel, eucalyptus and limestone. Medium concentration, sweet red fruit, slightly lean and green, hollow middle, soft and subtle, good acidity and mineral and a medium red fruit driven finish with a hint of green and cedar at the end. This is neither Bordeaux nor Cali, may be south American. This is well made but lacks material. (3489 views)
Tasted by wdcwineguys on 10/28/2019 & rated 95 points: This bottle was excellent. Opened about two hours before dinner and decanted in the cellar. Enjoyed with before and during dinner, with beef tenderloin.

This wine is in a great place right now. I’m really coming to appreciate the style of LM. Excellent fruit, but it’s not a California fruit forward wine. It’s more complex and fine tuned like a left bank Bordeaux.

We drank it side by side with a 2012 Mascot and it was interesting to compare. Both were excellent, just different wines. 94-95 (1367 views)
Tasted by Tsliwinski on 9/26/2019 & rated 95 points: Great Bordeaux inspired wine, nice finish (1317 views)
Tasted by Tsliwinski on 7/26/2019 & rated 94 points: Surprisingly bold for VA wine. Rich red fruit with a touch of game and silky palate (639 views)
Tasted by Tsliwinski on 7/26/2019 & rated 94 points: consistent taste of both bottles, a really good wine!! Go Virginia (1107 views)
Tasted by Omar Khayyam on 4/16/2019: RdV tasting with Joshua Grainer (at the winery): Pipe tobacco, lots of berries, minty notes, tight nose (tasted summer 2018). Velvet texture. Good mid palate, fine grip, will age for two decades probably and keep getting better. Wow! Virginia Cabernet has arrived. This is world class. Highly recommended. (1271 views)
Tasted by wdcwineguys on 3/9/2019 & rated 93 points: Enjoyed a bottle last night alongside a 2005 Quilceda Creek Cab. Deep purple color, still young, but a complex wine with great years ahead. There's a distinct nose of black fruit, minerals, granite, smoke. Long finish. (903 views)
Tasted by wdcwineguys on 10/14/2018 & rated 93 points: Best Lost Mountain I’ve had. Just tasted thoroughly at the fall release party. Deep ruby in color. Granite, sulfur, dark fruit on the nose. A nose that is distinctly RdV. It’s hard to explain. Smooth and velvety on the palate. Some pepper, spice, subdued fruit. This is not a fruit forward wine. Even for a young wine it was amazingly balanced and light. (1168 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
