Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.3 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 37 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by WST on 10/20/2022: I found one of my old bottles I had left to stock my Mom’s wine fridge for our visits. This wine is still a blast. Light to medium bodied. Intense energy and freshness, with fragrant herbal notes complementing cranberries and other red fruit.
I’ve been holding my ground, not buying Extradimensional Wine due to cellar space restrictions , but I may have to cave. (962 views)
Tasted by Dale Rattles on 9/11/2022 & rated 90 points: PnP through VinAire and took a good 30 minutes to open up. A bit of acid, slightly thin but tasty. Seems like it needs another 6-12 months to put on more weight but pretty good now. (800 views)
Tasted by ohne_musik on 7/18/2022 & rated 91 points: 2 years since the lat bottle. Same impression - classic, almost archetypal D&R - eminently crushable, tons of verve, sparkly cran-cherry fruit, a hint of stem and funk. Not an intellectual wine (unlike EDWC) but a total joy to drink. (1019 views)
Tasted by andrewhitson on 7/9/2021 & rated 90 points: This is an excellent Mourvèdre for the pricepoint. The body is deep and round with dark cherry, plum and a bit of pressed leather. In my opinion a very well produced wine with a touch of acidity and tannin but a very nice mouthfeel without being sickly sweet. I was very impressed. (1450 views)
Tasted by diggydan on 5/28/2021 & rated 90 points: Very juicy and uncomplicated wine. Dark berry fruit and brambly. Agree with the notes that this is reminiscent of bojo. (1570 views)
Tasted by jonh1 on 10/19/2020 & rated 91 points: Beautiful and enjoyable. Bright fresh red fruit balanced by spice and earth. Lighter body and lower alcohol than most California wines; drinks closer to a Pinot than a normal Mouvedre. Actually has a solid backbone of medium tannins, but they're integrated and don't stick out. Medium-plus acid - drinks fine without food, but even better with food. Will buy more. 4/5 (1522 views)
Tasted by blackbrownbeige on 10/12/2020 & rated 89 points: So much fun and joie de vivre in the glass. This has enough to hold your interest without being too serious OR too consciously natty, which I really appreciate. There is a lovely gamey, herbal wildness to it to go along with the crunchy red fruit that gives me the vibe of a Syrah/Gamay blend. Light and really nicely lifted, with white pepper on the finish to knit it all together. (1532 views)
Tasted by RussK on 9/7/2020 & rated 89 points: Russk. 89 + points. Light and juicy. Not nuts about the nose. (1529 views)
Tasted by willschenk on 9/5/2020 & rated 91 points: No specific notes, but this was fresh, ultra-juicy, meaty/funky, and exceptionally food-friendly. (980 views)
Tasted by ohne_musik on 9/5/2020 & rated 91 points: Unapologetically whole cluster herbaceous, juicy carbonic candy fruited and all in all a joyful wine. Despite being unfiltered and minimally sulfured, this is squeaky clean and pure. Green stem funk, cranberry with undertones of black fruit, and perhaps has a bit more body and color than Shake Ridge. Crushable for sure.

Day 2: a touch more one dimensional. Seems like the perfect cellar defender while keeping your hands off the single vineyard Mourvèdres! (1163 views)
Tasted by Teaky on 8/28/2020: Red fruited nose, bit of yeast, flavors of red cherry, some cranberry (not tart), very nice and light, mild-mod acicity, no tannins, this is nice. (685 views)
Tasted by Stephen Rash on 7/26/2020 & rated 90 points: Dark garnet in color and hazy in the glass; Aromas of raspberry bramble, strawberry, rhubarb, herbs, dusty cedar, and lilacs on the nose; tastes of dusty cherry, pepper, and floral notes on the palate; medium body, medium acidity, and medium tannins; medium finish. (789 views)
Tasted by MJR21401 on 6/26/2020 & rated 87 points: I think it is more difficult to make a good natural red wine than a white. That being said this wine had none of the problems associated with poorly made natural wines. It clearly had lots of suspended material and was cloudy enough to not see an image through the glass. The color was red/purple. The nose had some bright fruit ie. strawberry but primarily blackberry and pomegranate. Some cooking spice was noted as well as bramble. On the palate it was medium bodied with light acid. Initially upon opening and slightly chilled the tones were muted but as it warmed the fruit filled out. The finish was pleasant but not too persistent. Very soft without harshness. I surprisingly did not notice any peppery tones. (795 views)
Tasted by AlphaMikeFoxtrot on 4/11/2020 & rated 88 points: Mourvèdre made with Carbonic Maceration. Underripe red fruit all over this. Nice secondary notes of dirt and smoke. Really nice (810 views)
Tasted by PDubbz on 4/10/2020 & rated 90 points: High tannin, low acidity, very full full bodied...big and bold, delicious (980 views)
Tasted by bensony on 3/29/2020 & rated 90 points: The 2018 Familiar Mourvèdre is opaque pale purple in color with ruby hues near the bowl of the glass. I decanted this for about an hour, and the nose displays aromas of blueberry, sweet blackberry, plum, violet, dried green herbs, smoked meat, wet gravel, and a hint of oak. Once in the mouth, this wine showcases notes of tart blueberry, black raspberry, strawberry rhubarb, licorice, smoke, red and purple florals, wet granite, and stemmy underbrush. This is medium- to full-bodied with medium (+) acidity, medium tannins, and a medium (+) length finish. 100% whole cluster native fermentation with organic grapes, bottled unfiltered and unfined with minimal SO2 added. 700 cases produced.

100% Mourvèdre; 13.2% ABV (1054 views)
Tasted by Charlie N on 3/11/2020 & rated 89 points: Smells like red and orange fruit, a touch of natural funk that cools off. Flowers rolled and pressed. Chocolate covered strawberries.

Light color, very light body.

Some wet stone, acidity like a mellow tangerine that finishes snappy and warm.

This is like a well told joke where plenty of good thought is clearly applied but that should end with laughs, not furrowed brows. (1069 views)
Tasted by mattym19 on 3/7/2020 & rated 90 points: By the glass at Feast in Bozeman, MT. Nose is earthy with baking spices (especially cinnamon) and hints of dark fruit. Palate is medium-bodied and nicely acidic with ripe plum, grape stems, more cinnamon, smoked earth, and a hard-candy quality. I think the wine is very good, but the restaurant paired it with a venison steak and I’m not sure it worked as well as they thought it would, so it’s a little hard to separate the two. (1003 views)
Tasted by dlduchon on 1/30/2020: Fresh and vibrant. Fun to drink. (1236 views)
Tasted by RachelRueyRue on 12/30/2019 & rated 93 points: Drank starting 12/30/19 and 1/5/20. Solid wine from beginning to end and easy to drink immediately after opening. Sad to only have one more bottle. (1420 views)
Tasted by Biskuit on 12/21/2019 & rated 91 points: Joy juice (1060 views)
 Tasted by whitetable on 12/1/2019 & rated 90 points: PY90 • 2019.12.01
Medium purple. Melody of perfumed berries, tangy cherries, strawberries, raspberries, red plums, touch of sweet mint and savory herbs.
Initially the palate weight wasn't showing with mid-palate a bit lacking. Then couple hours after opening, the wine starts to gain weight and mid-palate fills in, adding nice structure and depth to the complex flavors. Medium+ finish.

A Mourvedre that exhibits vibrant acidity to balance out an abundance of fresh fruits. Stylistically different than the typical Mourvedre one would come across from Southern France, Australia, or America for that matter. This is a foodie's Mourvedre, as it's very versatile for food pairing. (870 views)
Tasted by Biskuit on 11/22/2019 & rated 91 points: Simply delicious. : ) (1143 views)
Tasted by lessthanjoey on 11/11/2019: Wow. I'm writing this a little late, so the details have faded. Somewhat unusually for Mourvedre I found this refreshing! Mouthwatering acidity and great fruit, but enough complexity to keep it interesting. Couldn't put it down. (995 views)
Tasted by dhp. on 11/6/2019 & rated 90 points: Love this. All the best aspects of naturally wine. Couldn't stop drinking this, which is pretty much the best compliment you can give a wine.

Additional bottles never quite hit the heights of this first bottle, but all were delicious nonetheless (1164 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
