Community Tasting Notes (average 93 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 27 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Gnieboer on 7/27/2023 & rated 94 points: Juicy and fruity, typical Myriad concentration, tannins are very smooth but there is still some good astringency to cut through a fatty meal. Was similar on day 2, so for me is in prime drinking window. (987 views)
Tasted by TastesGoodToMe on 2/6/2022 & rated 93 points: Very dark in the glass. Black Cherry and blackberry fruit. Nice vanilla undertones. Medium long finish. Plenty of time on these so no need to rush drinking. (2765 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 1/8/2022 & rated 93 points: Splash decanted. Big ripe style, with stags leap black fruits. Casmir texture. Has some showy oak with vanilla and coconut notes. Bit of dryness on the finish. Shows a bit of heat on the nose and palate which keeps this from a higher level in my view. (RW not a fan) (2251 views)
Tasted by sean7711 on 9/10/2021 & rated 92 points: Opened on Friday night with about an hour's worth of air. This was much better on the first few sips, really nice mouthfeel and full bodied, super charged Mike Smith wine. Beautiful bouquet.

Monitoring it over the night, it got increasingly shut down for business. Dry as a bone, sour cherry notes, big tannins. Still have 2 glasses to drink today, and will update my note accordingly.

If drinking now, drink on PnP. Otherwise, I would hold for a few years to see if this improves over age. (2728 views)
Tasted by EpochMD on 3/27/2021 & rated 93 points: Very smooth, predominately cherry notes floating on top of strawberry and blueberry; there is some degree of oak present here and some tannins but drinking well albeit early. (2570 views)
Tasted by CoryDean44 on 2/14/2021 & rated 91 points: Purple haze color with a nose of cedar, leather, and strawberries. Blueberry pie, coffee, clove, with bit of baking spices give this wine a warm textured presence on the palate. Arid and tart in its adolescence with great balance and structure. 91 points. (2490 views)
Tasted by Decanting Queen on 12/28/2020 & rated 91 points: ‘Someone let this horse out and the jockey keeps slapping it and it’s just going crazy’ was the quote of the night at our table in regards to this wine.
Dark in color, fragrant young fruity nose, and huge fruit on the palate. We all liked it, but not as much as the other wines on the table, and agreed it needs some time to settle down. (3730 views)
Tasted by DrBad on 12/26/2020 & rated 94 points: Very nice. Started with a Coravin glass and was going to open something else for dinner but this was so good I knew the other bottle was going to be a letdown so popped the cork. Beautiful aromas of cassis and floral lavender, silky and lively on the palate with plum, dark cherries, licorice and leather. Tannins are present and a bit dry by the end of the bottle but not overpowering, this should get even better with a few more years. (2421 views)
Tasted by michigan dogs on 12/23/2020 & rated 95 points: I have recently drank 3 different Myriad 2017 cabs, the round pound, three twins and the steltzner. The steltzner was by far the best, just so luscious, big dark fruit. It was as good or maybe even better than the 2016 vintage which I also absolutely loved. My score is higher than other posters, but all I can say is I wish I had more. (2074 views)
Tasted by sonodoc on 6/25/2020 & rated 93 points: Maybe not fair because of it being a different vintage, but I didn’t like the tastes of this 2017 Steltzner as much as I liked the recent 2016 Myriad Round Pond and Three Twins bottles I had. But still a nice wine. (2480 views)
Tasted by Badmonkey on 3/21/2020 & rated 93 points: Thinking about buying more to lay down but wanted to see where this vintage is at first. Dark ruby fruit - blackberry, currants/cassis, and dark cherry. Smooth mid-palate with a nice purity but a little lighter profile than expected - medium body. Nice rich flavors of dark berries, spice box, cocoa, and a little vanilla. Fairly long finish. Decanted for three hours and drank over a couple more. Improved with time but drinking well after the decant despite its youth. Enjoyable at this stage with a decent decant, however, as recommended by the Winery a couple more years appears to make sense for it to hopefully fill-out/add some weight. 93 for me at this stage but I believe in line with the 94 rating from Dunnuck and Galloni with a little more time. 100% cab.  Tasted by JLuch1 on 2/4/2020 & rated 93 points: Decanted in the cellar for a couple hours and consumed over an hour or so for the Super Bowl. It is very clear that this needs time for a number of reasons. Out of the gate, dark blackberry fruit, lots of flamboyant vanilla and coconut flavors, gravel, some cocoa. Lot of grip and drive on the follow through with a fairly long finish. Alcohol does creep up on you after the initial kiss of oak fades. Certainly a big wine composed of high quality oak and juice, but very unresolved. It needs a couple years for the oak to integrate and settle down overall.

If drinking now I would decant for quite some time, 4 hours or more. Otherwise, you are better off waiting a couple years before attempting this one. Lots to look forward to in 2022 and beyond where 94-95+ is feasible. Right now it’s more like 93pts. (2973 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 1/11/2020 & rated 95 points: Put me on the optimistic side of this wine. The style isn’t for everyone but not sure I understand the negatively. Very aromatic for a young wine. Quite ripe, showing dark berry liquor and other dark fruit notes. Palate a little tight, with fine tannins. But very concentrated, polished, quite accessible. Has a nice flit and graphite mineral quality that makes this distinct in the Myriad lineup. Nice length to the finish. A lot to like here. I suspect it’s a medium term drinker given the accessibility but that’s just a guess. (2931 views)
Tasted by Mark1npt on 1/9/2020 & rated 92 points: Tried to like it but compared to the '16 tonight opened by HMC, it's very flat and one dimensional. Decent but at this price, it has to be more than decent. The '17s my friends are very much all like this. Sell them if you have them. (4558 views)
Tasted by csimm on 8/24/2019 & rated 95 points: Mike Smith 2018s & 2017s - Myriad, Quivet, Scarlett, Becklyn, and others (Saint Helena): Red and purple berry fruit, pulverized granite, and some subtle spice. Much less black and intense this go-around than from when I had it out of barrel. A very satisfying and complete wine, though much less monstrous than the massively endowed 2016. This 2017 strikes a nice balance of flavor and structure, especially as it travels toward the finish, where it keeps a steady pace and allows the fruit to cascade to a rewarding finale.

This still has more weight to gain; so, try to hold off another couple of years so it can hit the gym and try to impress against its year-older stud brother. 94-95+ points. (5661 views)
Tasted by csimm on 3/2/2019 & rated 97 points: Myriad 2017 & 2018: The blackest, densest, most mineral-driven in the lineup, the 2017 Steltzner impresses with its rocky, black minerality and deeply pitched black fruit core. A truly awesome example of the site and a remarkable accomplishment for the vintage. An awesomely powerful mid-level drop, with black/purple berry fruit and a wheel-barrel full of black rock and obsidian shards immediately satiating the palate. Finishes black, rocky, crunchy, and gothic. A liquid example of a Victoria Secret coal miner model getting duded-up for the Erotic Exotic Ball (yeah that's right, let that image set in for a few minutes).

The Steltzner is up there in quality with the Elysian, and I might even be underscoring it a little just because I’m trying not to let my palate preference for dark fruit and minerality totally rule my assessment of this wine. 96-97+ points, with upside in the coming years. Once in-bottle, give it a year or two to fully come together. An undeniably prodigious wine! (5213 views)

2017 Myriad Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Steltzner Vineyard

From release offer

Classic Stags Leap Cabernet with a Mike Smith punch! Deep, dark, and complex, a floral nose entices you with rose petal, sage, violet, cassis, clove, and finishes with the volume set to eleven. The dense richness is balanced perfectly with natural fruit acidity which completes this fantastic wine. Finally, a Mike Smith Stags Leap Cabernet Sauvignon! 94-96 points/ Jeb Dunnuck

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
