Community Tasting Notes (average 89.6 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 30 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by cmmatthews on 3/12/2024 & rated 88 points: Better on Day 1 - I don't think a day in the fridge helped anything here. (363 views)
Tasted by SMHalps on 12/13/2023 & rated 90 points: Shared this with my wine group at an Indian restaurant. Opened, but not decanted for about 45 minutes before pouring. We all liked the Carignane, but felt it was better without the food, as it didn't pair particularly well with the Indian food. (598 views)
Tasted by wchrisw on 8/7/2023: Upon PnP this immediately stood out as not one of your usual suspects. I found it tart and taut. Probably too young but I thought the acidity would match my meal. Sour cherries stood out. Day 2 it had mellowed to what I would consider a simple table wine with cherry still at the forefront. Bottle had high amount of sediment as well. I’d guess this will be better in a couple years but ultimately it is expendable. (705 views)
Tasted by rbfleming on 8/6/2023 & rated 90 points: Prunes, herbs, nice balance. (801 views)
Tasted by MichielV on 5/17/2023 & rated 89 points: After dinner wine. I like this grape and this is well made wine. (977 views)
Tasted by Brian of Mull on 5/13/2023 & rated 89 points: Opened for 4 hours. Color is ruby. On the nose: mixed red and blackberries, vanilla, and some cherry. On the palate: Soft red and black berries and vanilla. A restrained effort I think. Solid but just ok. (884 views)
Tasted by mmiller94 on 1/5/2023 & rated 91 points: Unctuous, lots of red fruit, caramel, smoke, earth. (1267 views)
Tasted by VoteferPedro on 12/12/2022: I generally like the Ridge Carignanes a lot but this seems a bit mute. Well made, of course, but lacks a joie de vivre. Did not budge with air. perhaps should wait longer, but others seemed to be enjoying... (1146 views)
Tasted by hadukla on 3/29/2022 & rated 93 points: Fruity, balanced, easy drinking on its own. Not sure why carignan isn't more popular as a standalone grape. (1814 views)
Tasted by TheBosWineGuy on 12/19/2021 & rated 91 points: Vibrant red color that was a preview of what was to follow on the nose and palate. My uncle thought it was like if you could drink a handful of berry fruit hard candies. Excellent fruit concentration with fresh acidity and a decently long finish. A success for Ridge. (1774 views)
Tasted by lozatron on 11/30/2021: Ridge Dinner 29 November - The Young Ones (Hawksmoor Guildhall): Super well put together, restrained with a lot of backbone. Lacked the crunchy red-fruit I associate with Carignane but lovely in its own way. Of all the wines, this one I think suffered from being served in such a context. (1901 views)
Tasted by WetRock on 11/10/2021: Close to my last note. Maybe half a notch closer to the Buchignani this time. The complexity around the edges seemed to have picked up a bit. Something I noticed this time was that this had a lot of fruit for a non-mountain CA wine of 13.7%. The restraint should be thanked. I imagine in many vintages this fruit was taken well north of that which is a shame. (1742 views)
Tasted by rbfleming on 11/2/2021 & rated 90 points: Fruity nose, purple-red color. As others have reported, nice mouthfeel, nice balance with soft tannins, and an excellent companion for many comfort foods. Better than I expected or deserved. Enjoy it young (it, not you). (1539 views)
Tasted by cos65 on 8/10/2021 & rated 88 points: sb
Medium ruby purple
Dry dark fruit cool flavors, light tannins
Blind I thought this was a light Bordeaux.
Quite nice and refreshing. (1485 views)
Tasted by MRichman on 7/26/2021: Bright, silky, smooth, purple fruit. On the sweet side. Beautiful mouth feel. A bit simple with good acid. Very good. Drink now-2026 (1146 views)
Tasted by ralstenm on 7/26/2021 & rated 92 points: Big red berry nose, spices. Full flavored balanced acidity and tannins. Nice with a burger! (1183 views)
Tasted by bjschmitt on 7/9/2021 & rated 89 points: Better than expected. (1028 views)
Tasted by HaydenBradbury on 6/1/2021 & rated 90 points: Light, floral, perfect summer time sipper. Drink young and enjoy! (1117 views)
Tasted by cbleary on 5/26/2021: Floral, woody and elegant with an exceptional silky texture. It showed best treated like a Beaujolais, served cool. (923 views)
Tasted by CurtaVino on 5/12/2021 & rated 83 points: Not sure what to make of this wine. We usually love every Ridge ATP wine we get, we usually love Carignane from a variety of Cali producers. But this one was just flat. Almost no nose, had a generic "red fruit" one layer flavor, and a short finish. Nothing stood out as off-putting, there just wasn't anything to get excited about.

I have one more bottle that I will try and will update my review if the other one has any more depth or detail. (1035 views)
Tasted by ChateauShiny on 5/6/2021 & rated 88 points: Opaque purple, with purple legs. The nose is black cherry, sweaty leather, vanilla, and a touch of herbs. Medium bodied, medium high acidity, and extremely smooth. Black cherry, vanilla, and a bit of blueberry fill out the palate. Velvety tannins. Short tart cherry, vanilla, and black pepper finish.

This is a straightforward and simple wine that will go well with food. There is a place for a simple and quality wine like this in my cellar, but it needs to be at the right price. I think $30/bottle is a bit steep. (990 views)
Tasted by WetRock on 5/2/2021: This is pretty good. There is some candy like fruit but also a sort of more rustic earthy hints. Tangy and fresh. It doesn't display the sort of depth the way the Buchignani does. At least in some vintages. This is quite tasty in it's own way. That said I think it's overpriced. This would be a terrific sort of $15-25 kind of wine but now that Ridge is pricing everything they make over $30 the value of some of the wines is getting questionable. They certainly make quality wines up and down their lineup but turning their back on the value end of the market might not help them keep their base. (1339 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
