Tasted by Decarlor on 1/5/2022 & rated 95 points: Drunk with 16yr on its shoulder. Great discover! Silky and elegant with a great nose. (1277 views)
Tasted by UTPK on 8/20/2019: A bit rustic. Very dark and tarry. Still some tannins but almost mature now. Needs 30 min to open up. High quality for a Barbera. Fresh acidity. Overall a big dark wine for steak or grill. (2310 views)
Tasted by JOsgood on 4/20/2019: A bit past its prime with the fruit not showing much. Still drinkable but probably 5 years too late. (2512 views)
Tasted by Shiaxonna on 2/19/2019 & rated 87 points: Christmas spices, cardamum, eugenol, Tokaji-ish nose. A bit sharp on the palate. Over the top? (2454 views)
Tasted by Pancreatitis on 8/31/2018: Dark black wine, initially tar, coal, cinders, black olive, very tannic, quite reticent, after 4 hours open started to show rose, sandalwood spice and juicy dark fruits, youthful in the extreme. (2803 views)
Tasted by gzim on 10/24/2017 & rated 90 points: Showing well, probably at its peak. Nice balance (2894 views)
Tasted by hajoha on 10/6/2017 & rated 90 points: Viser flott dybde og power.
Noe mørk i uttrykket og tåler et par år til i kjelleren.
flott vin. (2506 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 9/19/2016: I'm sure I first tasted this at a trade tasting (i.e. I don't remember buying it, but I guess I liked it enough on release), why else would it be in my cellar (read: my friends don't give tasteful gifts, jk!). In any event, it's been too long ago to remember exactly what I first saw in this wine, in this vintage (that at the time no one was talking about), and that thing is purity, perfectly knitted with ribbons of elegance. In the end, it was hard to decide between smelling it all night, or actually drinking it. Some hours later I did not have any such decisions. This was a joy, and seems to still be inside its window; probably best to consume now. recommended

Aerated in decanter for 90 minutes, served at cellar temp, non-blind. Cork and fill in great shape.

Tasted by Ali on 9/17/2016 & rated 90 points: Drinking very well. Lean with brisk acid and tart red fruit. (3599 views)
Tasted by galenico on 2/26/2016 & rated 90 points: VERTICALE CONTERNO BARBERA CASCINA FRANCIA: Da magnum.
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 7/29/2015 & rated 91 points: An evening of wines from Trentino/Alto Adige (University Circle): A few months back, this group did a Barbera tasting and we discussed how well they might age. I bought this wine since then to check it out. It seemed as good a time as any to drink it. Ruby in color. The nose has dark cherries and black raspberries along with a nice earthy funk. Maybe a bot of damp forest floor. On the palate, this is juicy with nice black raspberries and dark cherries. It is still fresh and alive. But, at ten is it giving me anything that it didn't give me at 5? I don't think so. An outstanding wine, but I am not sure it gets much better after five or so years. It certainly held just fine though. YMMV. (4608 views)
Tasted by SveHj on 7/21/2015 & rated 93 points: 2005 Giacomo Conterno Barnera d' Alba Casina Erancia - Serralunga d'Alba

Decantet. First glas right away.

Deep dark red color, towards black in senter. Clear and clean.

Nose aromas show dark berries, smoke and tart. Cherries. Vanilla? Wood and smoke from the fireplace. Ashtray. Dark spices.

Stunning smooth on the palet, rounded and full bodied. Beef, tart and smoth integrated tannins.
This wine is mouthwatering. It wonderfully well balanced and has loads of layeras. Komplex and ritch in tast. Long.

After 3-4 hours this shows a great open sweetnes, with ripe fruits and berries. Over all ripe cherries and dark spices.

Tasted by lk on 4/13/2015 & rated 89 points: Barbara with her osso buco. Dark fruits, raspberries, big structure and long finish. Good wine but more cellar time might help the integration. (2705 views)
Tasted by scamhi on 2/5/2015 & rated 89 points: A little clunkly dark fruit and big structure drank next to a 06 Produttori (2914 views)
Tasted by Eric Guido on 1/16/2015 & rated 93 points: The nose was autumnal, showing dried leaves and cherry, sweet spice and hints of citrus peel. On the palate, dried red fruits with a bitter twang, licorice and mineral soil tones swirled around the senses in a mouthwatering, slightly angular yet truly refined expression of Barbera. The finish was long and palate-staining with red berry, yet truly fresh. This was my last of six bottles, and I must say that I’ve enjoyed the development of this wine more than almost any other—drink up! (2697 views)
Tasted by rnellans on 9/23/2014 & rated 90 points: red fruit, red licorice, soft tannins, easy and fresh to drink, lovely on the palate, uncomplicated in a good way. (2205 views)
Tasted by Rob Hansult on 6/18/2014 & rated 93 points: Fairly deep ruby.
NOSE > Wild red-fruit & minerality. Wild-Cherry, Red-Cherry, Raspberry, Choke-Cherry, Blackberry, licorice, & a smoky complexity.
PALATE > Big, rich, but very tight. Great tension. Wild/Red/Choke-Cherry, Blackberry/Raspberry/Blueberry, licorice, limestone/minerals, & wood-smoke.
Excellent balance, acidity, depth, length, & intensity. The tension between rich ripeness, & tight, concentrated red-fruit is beautiful. Ripe tannins take a back-seat to the gorgeous fruit, & add back-bone/structure.
Showing just some hint of age, but drinking amazingly young.
An eye-opener, & 1st high quality Barbera I ever tasted.
Impressive. (885 views)
Tasted by Mlermontov on 6/18/2014 & rated 93 points: Riesling Show (Count's Mannor): Ripe cherry, rich, touch of vanilla, middle is full of sweet macerated cherry. touch of grape skins on the finish. This is my first taste of a well aged Conterno Barbera...and i must say its amazingly good. Cherry dominates overall but the balance and acidity keep this wine fresh. great stuff! (3162 views)
Tasted by unionst on 4/10/2014 & rated 94 points: Black cherry color.
On the nose: Raspberries, cherries, a little vanilla custard/creme brûlée with orange rind in the background.
Dark fruits (blackberries, ripe blueberries) dominate the impression on the palate followed by italian coffee (with the requisite lemon twist) and tree bark with a hint of bitter chocolate.
This wine corrects any generalization that Barbera D'Alba is a light wine or that it does not age well. Very nice mouth feel and great balance. Nice layering of sweet and and bitter. Outstanding value and has many years left.
Note: after making the above notes I dug into a grilled bone-in ribeye. With the aid of fat the initial sweetness and mid-palate orange rind bitterness were amplified - great interplay. (2569 views)
Tasted by Arcturus on 2/18/2014 & rated 91 points: Fragrant nose, BlackBerry jam, musky, great mouth feel good acidity/dark fruit combo, long finish (2867 views)
Tasted by gzim on 2/9/2014 & rated 91 points: Popped and poured. Big bold but still balanced.
Dark fruits, very dark profile, with a bit of wood. Plenty of acids on the finish which say this will still go a long way. Tannins are much more resolved than previous showings. (2161 views)
Tasted by Al Ehrhardt on 7/17/2013: I bought a lot of this in 04 and 05. Some of the 05's have been better than others, and this was a really nice bottle. Deep, dark ruby. Good acidity, black cherries, blackberries, dark plums, earth/minerals, just a nice bottle. Only a couple left. (2641 views)
Tasted by Federsin on 7/1/2013: Bigger style barbera, starting to really drink well now (2529 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 6/22/2013 & rated 92 points: WIML92

Tasted non blind with dinner. Opened and served immediately. Followed over two hours.

Garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of berries, flowers, plums and a hint of black cherries. Maybe light notes of white pepper. Flavors of berries, cherries and raspberries. Tangy acidity, medium body. Drink now, maybe over the next year or two. This bottle was a bit more tasty and showed better than the last bottle.

Last bottle. (2712 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 3/23/2013: WIMLNR

Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately.

Garnet color in the glass, little cloudy looking throughout. Nose of flowers, berries and cherries. Flavors of tart berries, raspberries and cherries. Racy acidity, medium tannin, medium body. Drink now. The acidity is fully exposed at this point and there is little fruit to counter. (3095 views)

Ken Vastola's fabulous guide to G. Conterno labels

Praelum: “Arguably the King of Barolo. No wine journey is complete without the tasting of one of the great Conternos. ‘Only premium quality can bring prestige to the Langhe.’ Giovanni Conterno taught his two sons Giacomo and Roberto after World War I to ferment and age wines in Bottis with prolonged maceration and ageing. The brothers split in 1969 and Giacomo started investing in his own vineyards since 1974. The wines of Cascina Francia, Monfortino and recently, Ceretta from Serralunga d’Alba are amongst the finest expressions of Nebbiolo that the wine world has ever seen. 4-6 years ageing usually.”

Barbera

Varietal character (Appellation America)
Varietal character (Wikipedia German)
Varietal character (Wikipedia English)
Barbera is a red wine variety, originally from Italy, which is best known as the second-most important Piedmontese variety after Nebbiolo. The wines made of this grape are mainly the everyday drinking wines of the region. The main appellations producing Barbera are Asti and Alba.

Barbera - The most widely grown red wine grape of Piedmont and Southern Lombardy, most famously around the towns of Asti and Alba, and Pavia. The wines of Barbera were once simply "what you drank while waiting for the Barolo to be ready." With a new generation of wine makers, this is no longer the case. The wines are now meticulously vinified, aged Barbera gets the name "Barbera Superiore" (Superior Barbera), sometimes aged in French barrique becoming "Barbera Barricato", and intended for the international market. The wine has bright cherry fruit, a very dark color, and a food-friendly acidity.

Alba

Consorzio di Tutela Barolo Barbaresco Alba Langhe e Roero

Alba is a town and comune of Piedmont, Italy, in the province of Cuneo. It is considered the capital of the hilly area of Langhe, and is famous for the white truffle, peach and wine production. Piedmont is in the Northwestern region of Italy, bordering France and Switzerland. Piedmont is predominantly a plain where the water flows from the Swiss and French Alps to form the headwaters of the Po river. The major wine producing areas are in the southern portion of the region in the hills known as the "Langhe". Here the people speak a dialect that is 1/3 French and 2/3 Italian that portrays their historical roots. Their cuisine is one of the most creative and interesting in Italy. Nebbiolo is the King grape here, producing Barolo and Barbaresco. In addition, the Barbera and Dolcetto are the workhorse grapes that produce the largest quantity of wine. Piedmont is predominantly a red wine producing area. There are a few whites made in Piedmont, and the Moscato grape produces a large volume of sweet, semi-sweet and sparkling wines as well.
